View Full Version : Doing a little bit of research
ILTBY 05-08-2008, 08:35 AM I'm a very passionate dog lover and have put quite a bit of time into studying dog ownership, behaviour, temperament, training, etc. I always find it very interesting to hear about other people's dogs and how they look after them, where they came from, etc, so I thought I'd do a bit of research on here. Give as little or as much information as you'd like-
Where did your dog(s) come from? (Pet store, pound, shelter, registered breeder, backyard breeder, etc)
Do/es your dog(s) have any training?
Would you say you have much understanding of your dog's temperament, behaviour, etc?
What breed or cross-breed is/are your dog(s)?
Do you think you'll own more dogs in the future?
What is your dog's diet?
That's all I can come up with for now :)

lessa 05-08-2008, 08:49 AM About 3 years ago we had a cocker spaniel from a shelter.
He was extremely high strung and hated men. (with men being in the majority in the house)
He ate dried dog food and had his bed in the mud room at the back door.
He had brought with him a squeeky toy which he would run to when ever he was upset.
He was a beautiful dog and if a single female had him she would be the perfect home for him.
We had to send him back to the shelter since he was afraid of our cats.
They would stalk him. Following close and just touching his tail. While one of the others would be waiting beside the next door to jump at him. The third would sit up high and watch his progress and if the other 2 hadn't scared him enough she would jump down in front of him.
He was going to have a heart attack or stroke so we sent him back to the shelter where a single lady from the next town took him home. Apparently he is doing great and they love each other.
No men No cats No bad nerves.
No I don't think so. With my physical abilities deteriorating it would not be fair to the dog. We may not even replace our cats as they leave this world.
Sayso 05-08-2008, 09:52 AM Where did your dog come from? (Pet store, pound, shelter, registered breeder, backyard breeder, etc)
From a breeder.
Does your dog have any training?
Not intentionally. He's gone deaf and has learnt sign language.
Would you say you have much understanding of your dog's temperament, behaviour, etc?
Yes. The tail usually gives it away, as well as his eyes.
What breed or cross-breed is your dog?
I'd rather not say. but he's white and fluffy and doesn't have the poodle cut.
Do you think you'll own more dogs in the future?
Due to our lifestyle we probably wont. We like to go camping and can't with him.
What is your dog's diet?
Anything he can fit into his mouth though it's usually tinned food mixed with biscuits.
I'm gonna use was here now. My puppy died when he was just 7 months old.

he could sit, stand, fetch a stick and crawl under the bed on command. lol
Would you say you have much understanding of your dog's temperament, behaviour, etc?
yup, I could always tell when he was in pain, or when he was happy etc. In fact my Mom used to know that we'd be coming home soon cos at precise 3:20 he would climb the window in his room on the front paws looking out of the house, and then would give us a frantically mad, welcome when we did reach home.
What breed or cross-breed is/are your dog(s)?
He was a pure Pomerian
Do you think you'll own more dogs in the future?
yup, not now, cos my Mother's all no after Sunny, but yeah, somewhere in the future I'm gonna own lots and lots of doggies.
What is your dog's diet?
He would have 4 chapatis a day, milk whenever he wanted, like sometimes he would drink about 5-6 refills and sometimes it wouldn' even drink twice. He loved fruit, and he loved Pedigree. He would have loads of Paneer pieces everyday and loved phiki kheer.

mammamaia 05-08-2008, 04:22 PM Where did your dog(s) come from? (Pet store, pound, shelter, registered breeder, backyard breeder, etc)
over 2/3 of a lifetime of dog-having, all of the above...
Do/es your dog(s) have any training?
only the one dobie my son had, briefly...
Would you say you have much understanding of your dog's temperament, behaviour, etc?
i'd say a lot, of all the many... first, because i love animals and don't treat them like possessions, but like friends, or children... and second, because for many of my dog-having years, i was having and raising 7 kids, so being up on our pets' temperaments was a vital necessity, for my children's safety...
What breed or cross-breed is/are your dog(s)?
you name it, and we probably had one with at least a bit of it... far as i can recall, over nearly 70 years: toy poodle; dobie; cocker; german shepherd; golden retriever; and mutts of indeterminate ancestry [majority of them];
Do you think you'll own more dogs in the future?
no... at my age and due to where i live, that's not in the cards...
What is your dog's diet?
for most, purina 'kibble'... for some in earlier years, major brand canned...
ILTBY 05-09-2008, 07:42 AM Really interesting responses so far, thanks for the input guys :)
Have added another question-
Did you do much research before buying a dog? For instance, did you research breeds, the difference between registered and backyard breeders, etc?

nope!

I was going to look up, but my Dad advised me against it, saying that it would just get confusing and the that Uncle would tell all there is to know about him, so we'll get to know stuff anyways, and for more convenience.
