I was just watching No Country for Old Men last night which is a great and really exciting movie. Unfortunately the ending was totally anti-climatic and killed any chance of making it a superb film. Much like Alien 3 killing the wonderful ending of Aliens.

So, what are good movies that you've liked that just totally left you in the dust when it came to endings?

Blood: The Last Vampire disappointed me - I thought it ended way too abruptly, and I was really enjoying it until then!

That's about the only one I can think of at the moment - most of the films that I thought had bad endings were bad all the way through. ;)

I agree. Everyone said "No Country For Old Men" was a great movie. And I thought so too as I watched it. Then comes the ending and...total disappointment.

28 Days Later...I loved it, but I hated the way the movie ended. Disappointed!

Hmm, I really loved No Country For Old Men. I thought the ending was perfect.

One movie ending that really got to me was the end of the most recent Bourne movie. I walked out of there feeling unsatisfied.

The ending of No Country For Old Men was full of symbolism, and therefore was excellent.

I liked the ending. It ended on a note of defeat--the man realized that there was nothing he could do to make the world a better place. It was probably the most symbolic ending I've ever seen in a movie.

Memento was kind of a buzz kill. I don't like movies that make me hate all of the characters involved, let alone in one fell swoop.

I Am Legend, brilliant movie but the ending left me feeling unsettled. Also the first LOTR. Obviously we knew it was going to be continued in the second and third, but it just ended so abruptly. Can't think of any others right now.

I totally agree with you for I Am Legend. It was just to convenient.

I agree. The book had a great ending, but the movie's ending was disappointing.

The ending of I Am Legend (book) was awesome, but most of the other people I know who have read it thought it was awful.

The Sixth Sense - I guessed the 'twist' ending straight away...

The Painted Veil. Ending (last two minutes or so) totally disappointed me, and otherwise it's been my favorite movie in... well, several years. I should really read the book.

I watched that movie two days ago now and I was definitely disappointed with the ending. It was piss poor. She got away too easily and they really could have done far more with the ending to tie the movie to an end. Heck, the spongebob squarepants movie had a better ending and I hated that movie.....kids love it though :p

Wow, you must be pretty good at movies then to have guessed that. I totally didn't get it right away. haha

And wowza Torana, that's the harshest thing I've ever heard about that movie, it was amazing. Seriously, Will Smith might be crying right now... :p

heh I was being honest :) It really was a piss poor ending. I mean come on, like it would be that easy for a bimbo to get away from a mob of freakish mutant humans and their mutant pets without them going after her.....as if!

I agree. I Am Legend did have a bad ending. If I was Will Smith, I would have chucked the grenade through the gaping hole that one dude made in the glass. I wouldn't have run after him with it in my hand. Chuck it, duck and run.

Other than the ending though, great movie.

Beat Takeshi's take on Zatoichi had an ending that utterly confounded me... O_O

It wasn't the worst ending ever, but a samurai movie ending with all the characters tap dancing and such... Strange. :)

Hmmm ... now I may have to catch that on KungFu HD.

I like the ending of "No Country for Old Men," thought it was perfect and completely out of the loop. I like out of the loop movies like that.

Thought "War of the Worlds" had a terrible ending, it was just like... let's run and, oh, never mind, we don't have to anymore.

The book "I am Legend" was great and I loved the ending. The movie would have really been bad had Will Smith not put in a great performance. His performance in some ways made up for the weak plot after you take all the creepiness out of the monsters.

He could not salvage that ending though. The book raised profound questions like what makes a society, the movie raised questions on what the heck just happened here.

They ~ 2002 ~ Horror

My friends and I retitled it, They-forgot to write an ending and went ahead with the filming anyway.

It ends in the middle of the story. No resolution, good or bad.

The book I Am Legend is definitely one of my favorites, but the movie mainstreamed it beyond anything I've ever seen. The vampires(random screaming things in the movie) were completely wrong and the ending was all happy and crap. The end of the book is sweet, but the movie threw it out and implanted crap.

Anyways, for other movies with sucktacular endings: Jurassic Park III(the whole army copout ending), 28 Days Later(from about 3/4 the way through to 5 minutes before the end), The Village, The Hulk, Matrix Revolutions(one was totally based on Berkeley's philosophical theories-not the jesus story), The new Star Wars movies, etc...

They. That entire movie was a waist of money. Disappointing from beginning to end...no even remotely scary.

i just saw Prince Caspain which was a decent movie, but then the ending was just random. it didn't make sense really. I'm not going to go all into it just in case someone hasn't seen it and goes all pshyco on me accusing me of ruining the ending, although there wasn't much of an ending to spoil

Monty python and the Holy Grail had a very lame ending.

I agree about Prince Caspian as well, but will also not spoil it for anyone who hasn't read the books or seen the movies.

Gladiator had an excellent ending. That was how to end a movie!

Good movie, suck ending.

Oh, what about Cloverfield!

ILTBY
05-21-2008, 10:25 AM
Totally agree with Cloverfield, think I said it on page 2 actually, was just the worst ending. The whole movie was actually very good, not what I had been expecting, and then they just left you feeling so disappointed. Still, much, MUCH better than the Blair Witch Project which is what some people were comparing it to.

Dreamcatcher. I love the book but the movie totally ruins the ending.

Where does one begin with bad endings and great movies?
In my own humble opinion, I think all great movies have terrible endings. Meaning, they end a great thing!
However.. I think all of the Harry Potter movies (excepting the first and second) completely botched the endings, but that was all due to timing, I think. Any HP movie should end with them going home on the train. No exceptions.
Most of the movies already mention on this thread I haven't seen, and now I will mention a movie that probably none of you have seen: The Mark of Zorro. ARG!! It ended too soon! They should have included some sort of seen with Diego and his father and mother, of him explaining the whole thing.
(I haven't been around in a while, so I'm typing a long reply to make up for it)

This is easy, the worst ending for me is the 1995 movie, Crimson Tide. And to be honest, the start and the middle aren't that great either, although I'll admit it has quite a nice soundtrack. It has a lot of inaccuracies, plus two pages of dialogue from Quentin Tarantino slapped in the middle which stick out like a sore thumb, but I suppose the average viewer might not spot the mistakes if unfamiliar with the workings of a submarine (which comes across as an unintentionally hilarious homage to Throw Momma from the Train), and they might even miss the wrenching dialogue style switch that shows up for a minute or so, which means up to the closing moments it might even be enjoyed. But....

It breaks the golden rule of building dramatic tension in such spectacularly inept fashion with its 'climax', that I think you'd have to be clinically dead not to spot how clumsy it is: Oh no, we're seconds away from nuclear war, what're we gonna do?!! Oops, my mistake, no we're not. The End.

I didn't like the ending of "21", because it tried to seem like it had a moral when really it made the protags just as bad as the "bad guys". I'm all for exploring the darkness of humanity (heck, Heart of Darkness is one of my favorite books), but don't wrap up a "jerks finish first" lesson in "nice guys finish first" paper to fool mainstream media.
I Am Legend and its ending had tons upon tons of symbolism, which was awesome, but plot-wise the ending was weak.
