View Full Version : A Name for a Girl
The title says it all, maybe someone could help me make a name for a girl character? She's Calm, and Kind. She has Red hair, her eyes are a shade of gray, maybe someone could suggest a name? Thanks to anyone that helps!
I've tried tons of names, but they just don't fit her description!

How far into your story are you? I'd just use a placeholder name, and see if a name jumps out at you as the story progresses.

I agree with Cog.
Sometimes I am well into a story before I can settle on a name. Often I will be just writing away and the name will come through and I think okay, there you go Robin, his/ her name is...whatever.
That is one of the mysteries of writing which I enjoy.

Let me see, red haired.... quiet, kind and calm, grey eyes.
I kinda see a Jane, strange, but that's what I see, maybe some other Austin kind of names, something that has a slightly demure feel, perhaps if not Jane, perahps, Elizabeth as well.

names depend more on what kind of story you're writing and where/when it's set, than the appearance of the character... without that info, it's impossible to advise you properly, imo...

Jack isn't demure, and I've never heard it used for a girl (though I LOVE that name) and so it may confuse readers. Maybe something like "Daliah" or something with a breathy feel. babynamesworld.com is a great website, where I usually go to figure out names for characters. Place-holder names are a good idea, but I can't seriously write with a name like "Pooky", and a serious name for me always ends up sticking. It will come to you, eventually, though.
I've already escaped the moment of not giving out the name, but now I really have to give it, because my pre-readers are getting, pretty annoyed that I evade the topic.

Hey,
Have you tried to look at the census records? They tend to have a ton of names to choose from. Let me see if I can find a link. I always choose from here and sometimes it doesn't fit but don't worry, there are a ton of choices you can look through.
U.S Census Bureau (http://www.census.gov/genealogy/names/names_files.html)
Click on the dist.female.first link and that should take you there.
Good luck and hope this helped :)

I like the name Rosalie. Go to BabyNames.com and do random searches. You can also find out the specific meanings behind names and try to relate that to your character. It's always hard to name characters but you'll eventually find the right one that fits.
I found it, thanks a lot Starry!

No problem!
Hmm. Jane sounds older and mature but it also sounds unique....lol. Actually, both of them sound fine. Not trying to judge by names but Michelle is a lot more common, I think.
I got Jean... finally... I think it fitted.

Well if you change your mind, go to www.babynamesworld.com
There are tons and tons of names there.
I like that name, and it does seem to fit the description.
I have to admit i'm another one that uses babynamesworld, I tend to search by meaning till I find something that stands out to me.

The name Ebony stood out, maybe because it's not necessarily the name you'd expect from a girl with those features.

Id be against Jane, or Rose. Jane Grey(xmen) is a famous Character with red hair. Then rose...Roses are red?

Strange, the first name I thought of when I read the description was Amalia xD.

Her name is Jean Grey.
As for the OP's question on names, I usually find a site with names from whatever time frame I'm writing on and browse 'til I find one I like. I never bother with it being 'perfect' either since most names grow on me with time and use.

I think Janette or Cecilia...I don't know why, but those names come to mind.
