I'd love for the tiny voice (not my conscience) in the back of my head to be permanently extracted.

But I bet that tiny voice makes you a better writer! (Unless it's the kind of tiny voice that says 'you SUCK'. Or 'mmm ice cream.' I have both of those voices, neither is quite helpful.)

To answer my own question I'd have more confidence.

What song is the most annoying to have in your head all day?

From bitter experiance its the Nanananananananananananananananana BATMAN! thing. I had it right through my higher english exam and it made me insane!

The Doctor Who theme tune. I had it in my head throughout a maths exam. Only, about halfway through, I realised I was running out of time. So the tune got gradually faster and faster in my head. It reached the point of ridiculous, in the last few minutes.

First runner up: Mrs. Parslow, 7th grade English, who never showed any understanding of creativity, and whose only goal was keeping order - at which she failed miserably.

Winner: Mrs. Scott, 7th and 8th grade Mathematics, who managed to drain any possible life out of the subject, and inspired only a loathing for math in her students. (Fortunately, the following year, at a new school, Mrs Wever was the exact opposite - she instilled an enthusiasm for the challenge of Geometry proofs, and brought the fun back into the subject.)

Mrs Hewit

The "Umm,and Ahh" factor as mentioned above.

I think i got so bored a noted her mms down too 300 umms and her ahs down to 250 in one lecture (30 minuute lecture do too her IT skills).

She could NEVER work the frigging computer, so we had to wait 15 minutes while the computer would work for lectures to begin (the fact 300 students wouldnt help her said something). But when i first started uni i liked missing out on 15 minutes of boring lectures, but after a while, it got stupid!

2) Mrs Dunkin

The kind that smiled to your parents, but would bare her razor fangs at you when they left. Hated her with a passion. If she wasent 500 pounds at the time i think i would have smacked the women (ok probably not!), was i was in year 3 and OMG, she scared me. I remember once i braught mud into the corridor (shoes) and she made me go back and forth between room and toilet to grab one peice of toliet paper to wipe up the mud, it took an hour! witch!

If you could have kicked a teachers ass would you of? And why?

Yes, there is this one teacher who I really cannot stand. He asks wierd question, like holding a computer mouse to my mouth and asking how I feel to have finished my coursework first. Then being all wierd when I say I'm not bothered. Or the other day, he is staring at me, so I say "what". He says he didn't say anything, and I said aye, but he was staring. He said
"I just wonder what you think sometimes," to which I replied
"At the moment I'm thinking what are you looking at." My mates chips in and goes "she's thinking happy thoughts" to which he glares at me and goes "I doubt it".
I mean, what the hell ??

Mr. Kirkham. (Didn't teach. At all.)

I think a lot of the time the people that become teachers shouldn't be the ones teaching, because they really don't care and are often bitter. I only recall one or two teachers I was actually fond of.
Especially reading over your guys' posts. Damn. xD

I did have this teacher in second grade - Mrs. Smith - who always had it out for me.
One time when I turned in a paper without my name on it she held it over the trash and said that whomever it belonged to had to come and get it. So I had to dig it out in front of everyone (I was deathly shy when I was younger). She knew it was mine obviously since it was the only one without a name. e_e
She did a lot of things like that.
My mom took me out and put me in a different class lol.

Also, this isn't a teacher per say, but I really hated the security guard at our high school. He was a lazy bum who never did anything, and I skipped a lot.
So finally after about a week he decides to catch me and my best friend - and I never lied to him and said I wasn't skipping - I said that we were getting coffee. He called my teacher from the office and told him that I /said/ that he said I could leave class, which isn't what I said at all. Which made me look like a liar and that I was putting words into peoples mouths.
I wanted to kick his ass, yeah. LOL. This was back when I was really shy also so I felt extremely intimidated to go back to that class. So I dropped it. u.u It was just an elective though. :p

Another teacher I never got - for a completely different reason - was my ninth grade history teacher. She LOVED me. I mean like I was her favorite student, and I flunked. I never did my homework. And she always left me comments on my paper and not other peoples rofl.
Strange.

-is talking way too much about this-

I have to agree with everyone else and say no.
I mean his parents were killed in front of him and everything - I think he takes it pretty well by fighting back.
Like other people have mentioned, not very emo-like.
I don't even really find Spiderman emo.

I take emo as moping about in a 'depression' over something mild and not deserved of so much emotion.
Batman/Spiderman both have pretty decent reasons to be angry/upset I'd say.

What do you think is going to far in writing? What is "To Real To Read"

Mariami
10-14-2008, 02:44 AM
I don't think there's anything "too real to read."
Actually...the more real a writing is, more likely it is for me to read it.

Cogito
10-14-2008, 07:44 AM
I suppose too real to read would be a literary equivalent of a cinema verite that tried to follow a mundane life in real time. For example, if the character is staring blankly out the window for ten minutes, having ten minutes worth of writing describing every moment comprising that ten minutes.

It may be absolutely faithful to the subject matter, but I doubt it could be written well enough to capture and hold my interest no matter how skilled the wordsmithing.

Please don't go out of your way to prove me wrong on this!

Mariami
10-14-2008, 07:57 AM
Hm...Well, people don't just stare out of windows for 10 minutes. When they do it, they usually think about more things that could possibly be written on 10 pages, so if you describe their thoughts, it would be interesting. :p

Wreybies
10-14-2008, 11:50 AM
Cog brings up a good point. Really real could mean the most mundane of life's actions or the most graphic of violence.

Heather Louise
10-14-2008, 03:49 PM
What do you think is going to far in writing? What is "To Real To Read"

I don't think there is such a thing ... what one man thinks is too far, the other will love.

And Cog, I have tried that looking out of a window thing, I actually wrote about if for my descriptive writing in my GCSE. "Describe the view from your window". I got full marks :D

Ulysses is considered one of the most influential books in the english language. It's about 800 pages long, and details one day in an ordinary Dubliner's life. Problem is, you have to dedicate your whole life to it to fully understand it. Is that cool, or what?

Anyway, it depends on the context. Having rape scenes in a children's book is probably "to far"...

I don't think there is such a thing ... what one man thinks is too far, the other will love.

And Cog, I have tried that looking out of a window thing, I actually wrote about if for my descriptive writing in my GCSE. "Describe the view from your window". I got full marks :D

It may make a good exercise for awareness and attention to detail. But my point was that fiction needs to filter out the irrelevant. A perfect reflection of reality is not desireable.

Ever read a transcript of an audio recording, complete with the "uh"s, pauses, throat-clearing, and other details we tend to automatically edit out when we listen? It's dreadfully dull reading. The same would be true if your novel verite chronicled every fidget, fart and neck pop of your character.

Do you think drugs should be legal and that would help solve some of the problem?

Ten years ago I'd have said 'yeeeess!!!', but now I'm not so sure. Western societies already have a large underclass that can't effectively participate in those societies. They have little in the way of opportunities and stimulus and drugs often fill that gap. We need to create better opportunities all-round before we legalise drugs, otherwise we'll just increase the dependancy and disfunctionalism of those underclasses even further.

I think drugs should be decriminalized, not legalized. Too many resources are wasted in chasing down and prosecuting users, and sticking them with criminal records that do not help - it makes them less likely to be able to find gainful employment, leading to more crime as they have to take illegal measures to support themselves and their habit.

Under decriminalization, they would be issued a summons, similar to a traffic violation. They could then be ordered to enter treatment programs, especially with multiple violations. Meanwhile, enforcement efforts would focus more on importers and dealers, who would still be treated as felons.

Moreover, with decriminalization, the possibility is reopened of supplying drugs to addicts in controlled quantities as part of a treatment program, which would have the side effect of lowering what addicts would be willing to pay for a fix. That in turn would lower the profit margin associated with illegal drug distribution, making it less attractive to organized crime (drug cartels as well as more traditional mob organizations).

It needs to be treated more as a medical disorder and less as a crime. Obviosuly, though, laws against things like driving while impaired should remain in full force, and in fact with increased penalties.

No, not at all. I am sorry but that is a sure way down the wrong path. I have seem some freaky stuuf happen when my other mates have dabbled in drugs.

I mean, one lass says "it would be fun to deal. Nothing bad like cocaine, but pills and whizz is fine". Making it legal is not going to discourage anyone, only make it easier for the smackheads to get their fix.

Good question - somewhat, i loved Grease (well, not when i was younger, but its somehow grown on me, im not sure why, its fun maybe). And i loved moulin rogue.

Other than the above (and there is so many musicals out there these dasys!), nope.

Recently i've been to see a lot of plays/broadway shows, and i've seen Rocky Horror picture Show (Love it, brought up on it since day one). And this year i got the chance to se The Phantom of The Opera.............. holy cow it was good (i mean brillant), will see it again next time (RIP Rob lowe btw).

There really is no reaspn why i like them, i just do (and considering the diversity of the ones i like). Just personal choice.

Are you a fan of musicals? Why? Why not?

Yes, but it's not that I go in for the campy 'gay' ones like Hello Dolly or A Chorus Line (don't wanna see 'em), it's more that I like the big trippy ones where I can sit and go "ooh pretty"- like Across the Universe or Moulin Rouge. I like musicals because I just like the idea of getting all La Vie Boheme and dancing on the tables with all my friends somewhere...just generally being crazy and getting away with it.

Not really. I get excited about a character that is working well in a story, but attached? No. The story is what matters to me. If I find I have to rework a character into someone barely recognizable, I'll do so, and my only regret will be all the rewriting that would entail.

He or she is not my imaginary buddy. He or she serves a particular purpose in a story, and either fulfills that purpose, or doesn't. If it's a minor deviation. I may set something or someone in the way to deflect him or her along the right path.

I sometimes go without any food for a day or a day and a half and don't tell anyone. It's not anorexia; I just lack appetite and I'm tired of friends forcing food on me.

**I have that sometimes too....but there are days when I have constantly foood in my mouth and yet am always hungry.

I swear, I have no idea what you're talking about... http://i267.photobucket.com/albums/ii295/Violetine/Animated/hmm.gif

Also, don't blame me - blame the bright spark whose idea it was to double-dip them in chocolate and then put them in a ninja-shaped cookie jar that shouts 'oyo!' when you open it.
*had hours of fun coupled with chocolate-y goodness* :D

I'm like him, except I don't know what milo is. I live on fattening foods, but you can always see my ribs.

I don't exactly have a "favoutie", but I could really go for some extra spicy chile con queso and some warm tortilla chips.

Speedy

Hmmm, a question i have to think about.

Probably Clint Eastwood or Al Pacino

Dnaiel Radcliffe)sp) seems to be an interesting fellow as well (might not be a top celeb, but he seems (with what little i have) to have a good head on his shoulders, smart).

OR jessica Rabbit, if only!

Flirting more than is just natural human nature.

For me its Emotional firtation that bothers me...spending more time with the opposite gender (or withever gender you prefer) then your hubby and talking about things which should be spoken to your love, or no spoken about with this "other person" (you know the whole emotional affair).
