Hello all.

I'm trying to become a great writer. It's my dream. Yes I realize I'll probably never become the next Stephen King or Anne Rice or Anthony Horowitz, much less a Joss Whedon or Amy Sherman-Palladino, but I am going to try damn it!

Anywho, I usually write either pure drama stories, or horror stuff. With my horror writing, I try to do a mix of creepy and gore. I like gore, I don't really know why, I just do. In my horror stories, my main character is almost always female. She isn't weak either. She is usually strong in some way. In my drama stories, a gay guy is always the main character.

It's a short story based off of Little Red Riding Hood. It's targeted toward mature audiences. I got first place in the contest I entered it in. I plan to re-do the ending a bit. I rushed that part.

All right, well I said hi. I plan to frequent this website as much as possible, and hopefully become a better writer. Hell, maybe I'll actually help a fellow writer. I usually try, but my advice for some reason never makes sense. So hi to my fellow writers, I hope to talk to you soon.

Posting your own work should not be the very first thing you do here. It is really worthwhile to see what other people have done to improve their writing, and see if some of it applies to your writing as well. That is part of why we require members to review other members' work before posting their own for review. On the other hand, there are no restrictions, other than content and copyright rules, on showcasing your work in your member blog.

If you haven't explored the site yet, you should probably do so soon. Newcomers often gravitate to the Lounge, the Word Games, or the Review Room, but there is much more to be discovered if you poke in the corners. Remember to check out our FAQ (http://www.writingforums.org/faq.php) as well, and be sure to read through the forum rules (http://www.writingforums.org/showthread.php?p=101625#post101625), too, to avoid any misunderstandings or hurt feelings. Respect for one another is our principal mandate.

As for the Review Room, new joiners often wonder why we do things a bit differently on this site than on other writing sites. We emphasize reviewing as a critical writing skill. Training your eye by reviewing other people's work helps you improve your own writing even before you present it for others to see. Therefore, we ask members to review other people's writing before posting work of their own. The Review Room forums on this site, therefore, are true workshops, not just a bulletin board for displaying your work (and on that note, please only post each item for review in one Review Room forum). Thanks for the welcomes. I'll refrain from posting more of my work until I've reviewed some other people's items. I do have a question, how does one see on how other members have improved their writing? Do I just ask them? Do I look at their earlier stories and compare what they have done differently in their current ones? Not trying to be a pain, I just would like to know how.

The recommended way to use the Review Rooms is to post revisions later in the same thread rather than editing the original post. Not everyone follows this recommendation, but many do. As you read the Review Room threads you will find many before/after versions, along with the suggestions that helped the writer make those changes.
