View Full Version : Favorite Music
BatCountry 07-23-2008, 12:51 PM Well, there are a couple of threads asking what music you are currently listening to, but nothing about what bands or genre of music you like to listen to. So you can use this for it if you want. Tell us your favorite genre(s) of music and your favorite bands for each one. Feel free to discuss music also. But please don't say anything like "Your band sucks" or whatever.
So I'll start out then.
My favorite genre's of music are: Alternative rock and metal, nu metal, heavy metal, metalcore, hard rock, emo, soft rock and punk.
My favorite bands are:
Lostprophets, Avenged Sevenfold, God Or Julie, Slipknot, Thousand Foot Krutch, Dashboard Confessional, Yellowcard, Linkin Park. But I do listen to a huge variety.
Speedy 07-23-2008, 01:06 PM Every Kind of Heavy metal, from Nu to Grind core (except Emo - wait, that’s not heavy)
Favourite bands
Opeth, Slipknot, Nightwish, Nevermore, Static-X, Disturbed, KoRn (Follow the leader only - i must get that across), Deep Purple, Sepultara, Meshuggah, In Flames, Linkin Park (COnspiracy Theory only), Carcass, Drowning Pool, Cannibla Corpse, Killswitch Engage, Lamb of God, Trivium, Machine Head, Motor Head, Arch Enemy, Impending Doom, Pentara, Mudvanyne, Fear Factory, System of a Down, Iron Maiden..
Just to name a few
oh and going against the trend I LOVE (loved, sadly before the lead singer got into drugs), a band called Days of the New.... was only 16 when he wrote and toured, then a few years later found an evil drug called ice.
BatCountry 07-23-2008, 01:12 PM Out of all of those bands you listed I've listened to Slipknot (new album coming in august), Static-X (side project of lead singer of Thousand Foot Krutch), Disturbed, a little bit of Korn, and Linkin Park.
I rather like Slipknot's new style
Speedy 07-23-2008, 01:23 PM Out of all of those bands you listed I've listened to Slipknot (new album coming in august), Static-X (side project of lead singer of Thousand Foot Krutch), Disturbed, a little bit of Korn, and Linkin Park.
I rather like Slipknot's new style
Its Slipknots last ever album, so it better be good. Their trying to be more "euro" this time, which i just dont think they will pull off.
I think Corey will hold a good record on how fast can one screw up ones vocal cords.
Flozzie 07-23-2008, 01:29 PM I listen to almost anything except jazz, opera and very hard music. Favourites at the moment are, in no particular order, Nightwish, Robbie Williams, Killswitch Engage, H.I.M, Poets Of The Fall, Darren Hayes, Savage Garden, Mötley Crüe, AC/DC, Sonata Arctica etc etc.
WhoWatchesTheWatchmen? 07-23-2008, 01:39 PM Recently I've found a guy who mixes orchestral music with techno and sometimes rock. Suprisingly, the outcome is amazing. It may sound weird, but it's cool when a score fades out and then techno grinds away. Fortunately, their are no lyrics, otherwise it would sound off kilter.
lessa 07-23-2008, 01:40 PM I will listen to all types for a while.
My favourites are the 60's.
new country, big band and war tunes from wwII.
Children's songs and Christmas carols.
I love gilbert and sullivan operettas.
The andrew sisters, Dean Martin,
I really dislike the groups that swear with every other word.
I don't think it adds to the songs.
Cogito 07-23-2008, 01:55 PM Well, there are a couple of threads asking what music you are currently listening to, but nothing about what bands or genre of music you like to listen to.Actually, that's not true. This thread appears frequently, and then drifts away as other topics eclipse it. But no matter - just create another one...
Speedy 07-23-2008, 01:59 PM I really dislike the groups that swear with every other word.
I don't think it adds to the song
Im not disagreeing, i just think for some fans, it adds passion (which can seem odd or wierd etc), especially if your music comes with moshpits and crowd surfing ;)
Necromortis 07-23-2008, 02:06 PM A lot of metal, classical music (especially if played on the guitar), and conscious hip hop. And then the sprinkling of random bands.
Metal: Tyr, Ensiferum, Nightwish, Opeth, Einherjer, Amon Amarth, Children of Bodom (earlier stuff, and then his vocals still bug me), In Flames (earlier stuff), Dark Tranquillity, At the Gates, Arch Enemy, Bathory, Belenos, Otyg, Vintersorg, Falconer, Iron Maiden, Metallica, Judas Priest, Finntrol, Folkearth, Falkenbach, Kamelot, etc. etc. There are many more.
Hip hop: Army of the Pharaohs, Bliss n Eso, Hilltop Hoods, Living Proof, Debaser, Sandpeople, Eminem's older stuff, D12, Jurassic 5, Dilated Peoples, Sage Francis, Hell Razah, Killah Priest, Masta Ace, Pigeon John, Pegz, Atmosphere, The Roots, Sean Price, Strong Arm Steady, Talib Kweli, Tech N9ne, X-Clan, and Xzibit's older stuff. And many more.
~Christian
Scribe Rewan 07-23-2008, 04:48 PM My favourite genre is Indie, and Muse are a massive favourite for me. I also like Keane, Editors, The Killers etc etc However my style is quite ecclectic- I have songs I like in most genres.
However my favourite band is Globus. They are a group owned and run by Immediate music who make music for films- like the really epic orchestral trailer music. I believe they did one of the spiderman trailers, and Harry Potter 5. Globus use Immediate musics movie scores and 'rock them up' adding vocals, guitar, bass and drums, on top of the already 80 peice orchestra and 100 strong choir (these are rough estimates.) Their sogns are in English, Latin and Arabic. They have the most amazing epic sound.
Fluxhavok 07-23-2008, 04:54 PM classical- violin pieces mostly (i used to play.)
My number one favorite style would be instrumental rock; Joe Satriani, Eric Johnson and the like. That's the style of music I'm going to play when I save up enough for my own electric guitar.
Close after that, I love 80's rock. Poison, Motley Crue, Mr. Big... A lot of people I know hate this kind of music, but I simply can't get enough.
But this man, Jun Senoue, I put in a class of his own. I love everything about his music. He's an instrumentalist like Satch, but also in a more typical rock group called Crush 40. I say "more typical" because I haven't really found another band that sounds like they do.
Here's an example of my perfect song, played by Mr. Senoue:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t0Vk9xfceMM
Heather Louise 07-24-2008, 03:28 AM I like it when people play the piano and sing along with it, I think it is amazing how they can do that. Two of my favourites are Regina Spektor and Kate Nash.
I also like all of the dancey music that is out, like really retro sounding as if it is from the 80's. Alphabeat, the Ting Tings, Destination Unknown, Utah Saints. And a little rave when I am in the mood, although I couldn't name you any of the MC's any more, I am not that with it at the moment. :p
I like older styles aswell, Sting and the Police rock my socks, that woman who sings Total Eclipse of the Heart and Queen are just groovy.
ValianceInEnd 07-24-2008, 03:31 AM I love all kinds of music, except most rap and country. When it comes to rock I primarily listen to punk, metal, and classic. I like techno, especially the kind that gets stuck in your head. Funk is always good to listen to and when I need to cool down I like to listen to big band. When I play my Ipod on shuffle it's interesting how it will go straight from Slayer to Louie Armstrong. :p
PipeandPen 07-24-2008, 04:10 AM Heavy Metal, Hard Rock, and Alternative Rock (all of a Christian influence, I use to listen to all metal and rock, but due to some events in my life, I felt I needed to do this). I also like Classical music.
Bands:
Demon Hunter, Maylene and the Sons of Disaster, The Showdown, FAIR, East West, Becoming the Archetype, and Disciple.
I also love me some Trans Siberian Orchestra and Johnny Cash.
Harmire 07-24-2008, 11:54 AM I like to listen to Chill music, and my favorite band would probably be Thievery Corporation. I listen to much more than just that though, I have 25k+ songs in iTunes :D.
ValianceInEnd 07-24-2008, 12:18 PM Demon Hunter
Nooooooooooo! Ever since they did a horrible cover of Prong's Snap Your Fingers, Snap You Neck, I cannot for the life of me respect them.
BatCountry 07-24-2008, 01:15 PM Actually, that's not true. This thread appears frequently, and then drifts away as other topics eclipse it. But no matter - just create another one...
sorry
BatCountry 07-24-2008, 01:17 PM I really dislike the groups that swear with every other word.
I don't think it adds to the songs.
I'll agree a little, i don't like it if every other word is a swear word. Slipknot's latest album is their only album not to have a parental advisory sticker on it. Critics always say the lead singer (Corey Taylor - also lead singer of Stone Sour) has to use the 'f' word in his songs. So he wanted to prove them wrong. But swearing does put a little bit more passion into the music.
BatCountry 07-24-2008, 01:19 PM I also love me some Trans Siberian Orchestra
They're a great orchestra, and I think they donate a penny for every dollar they earn from their concerts to charity.
BatCountry 07-24-2008, 01:21 PM My favourite genre is Indie
I'm not completely sure what Indie means... I thought it meant a band that is under the radar, but now it changed so I'm not completely sure about it.
Speedy 07-24-2008, 01:32 PM Indie music gained its freespiritedness and strident anti-commercialism and non-mainstream attitudes and philosophies in direct lineage to the DIY ethic of punk and 1980s alternative rock such as The Pixies and Sonic Youth, while simultaneously exploring broader song structures, lyrics, and instrumentation to which major labels and corporate distributors might have been more averse
Sadly it was wikied ;)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indie_music
Scribe Rewan 07-24-2008, 01:45 PM Indie is a shortened term for Indie Rock, which is technically fake indie. Indie Rock (the actual definition of Indie in music seems to have been usurped) is big studio-produced music with an independant style. Bands like Editors, Bloc Party, Kaiser Chiefs etc are all bands signed to major labels, but produce a sound in the style of independant music.
I suppose it's pretty ironic really, that independant had become the mainstream. I guess that's just how it works.
Speedy 07-24-2008, 01:53 PM Well thats how music goes doesnt it? kind of like fashion (well it is fashion i guess)
Whats cool, suddenly loses interest. And whats small suddenly swells in crowd.
Gone Wishing 07-24-2008, 09:09 PM Just don't make me ever have to listen to the Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers Christmas album - ever - again, and I don't really mind what else I have to listen to!
(Favoured genres are metal, rock, folk, alternative, electronica, contemporary... Current musical obsessions include Deftones, Damien Rice and, as always, Tori Amos).
tarnished 07-24-2008, 10:06 PM I like weird music.
My favorite band is definetly Death Cab For Cutie. I like a lot of bands with a similar style as them as well.
I also really like Ima Robot.
I like any bands who do things that aren't mainstream, and are original
rumplestiltzkin 07-25-2008, 12:35 AM My two favorites are Beatles and Scorpions....I also like Green Day, Flyleaf, Twisted Sister....I guess I like a lot of music but right now those are my favorites.
Kratos 07-25-2008, 06:43 AM I find that my favorite bands go on tour together, so I guess they are similar in sound. The main genre I like is rock.
Breaking Benjamin
Three Days Grace
Seether
3 Doors Down
Nickelback
Disturbed
MarcG 07-25-2008, 08:22 AM Alien Ant Farm, Korn, Ligion, Five Finger Death Punch, Hed PE, Incubus, Static-X, Tenacious D, Billy Talent, Nonpoint, System of a Down, Serj Tankian.
If I listed the bands/groups where I liked 1 or 2 songs, this would be an entire page! ;O
Ex Leper 07-25-2008, 08:27 AM I listen to rock music - anything from the 60's to the 00's. I have in my collection of shiny discs such diverse acts as Elvis, The Beatles, to Nile and Avenged Sevonfold.
My best bands are Deep Purple and KoRn.
BatCountry 07-25-2008, 12:19 PM Alien Ant Farm, Korn, Ligion, Five Finger Death Punch, Hed PE, Incubus, Static-X, Tenacious D, Billy Talent, Nonpoint, System of a Down, Serj Tankian.

Same here XD
BatCountry 07-25-2008, 12:21 PM I find that my favorite bands go on tour together, so I guess they are similar in sound. The main genre I like is rock.
Breaking Benjamin
Three Days Grace
Seether
3 Doors Down
Nickelback
Disturbed
What about Godsmack? Breaking Benjamin, Three Days Grace, Seether, Skillet were on tour with Godsmack. And Benjamin Burnley said that Godsmack influenced their music i think.
Cpn. Anon 07-25-2008, 04:25 PM My favourite genre is folk; I'm currently listening to some bluegrass courtesy of Amy Millan.
Risen Glory 07-25-2008, 06:15 PM *Goes through Facebook to copy/paste favorite music*
ac/dc, aerosmith, the all-american rejects, billy joel, the beatles, cheap trick, coldplay, deep blue something, dispatch, drifters, duran duran, f.t. island, flight of the conchords, the fray, the killers, motion city soundtrack, red hot chili peppers, state radio, starfield, the who
Just some of the music I listen to. Out of that list, I love Aerosmith, Dispatch, The Fray, Motion City Soundtrack.
FLIGHT OF THE CONCHORDS IS THE BEST. Check them out on YouTube. You'll laugh your ass off.
Caesar 07-25-2008, 11:08 PM The Velvet Underground is my absolute favorite band ever.
I also like Lou Reed and John Cales solo stuff, Sex Pistols, Bob Dylan, Clash, Rolling Stones etc...
PipeandPen 07-26-2008, 01:43 AM Nooooooooooo! Ever since they did a horrible cover of Prong's Snap Your Fingers, Snap You Neck, I cannot for the life of me respect them.
lol, yeah, it was pretty bad, but I still like them.
soujiroseta 07-26-2008, 09:58 AM i find that soundtrack from movies, games and trailers of any kind really just get me smiling and inspired. Harry Gregson-Williams and Hans Zimmer are true geniuses.
but when it comes to bands id say Three Days Grace and Linkin Park are regulars on my playlists.
BatCountry 07-26-2008, 02:22 PM and Linkin Park are regulars on my playlists
Linkin Park is a pretty good band. But some of their good songs get old really quickly. Like the song "In The End" or "What I've Done"
flashgordon 07-26-2008, 02:28 PM I prefer old-school roots reggae to most music. Of course, classic rock is always nice.
Linkin Park is a pretty good band. But some of their good songs get old really quickly. Like the song "In The End" or "What I've Done"
Hm. "In the End" is one of their songs that never got old for me.

Love the show...and thats all i'll say ;)
Can't believe i forgot to mention AC/DC before.
the norse atlantic saga 07-26-2008, 11:14 PM The Velvet Underground is my absolute favorite band ever.
I also like Lou Reed and John Cales solo stuff, Sex Pistols, Bob Dylan, Clash, Rolling Stones etc...
John Cale is a machine, and im still hopin on marrying bob dylan one of these days.
i like this list a lot! :)
edit: my own list is like... rock'n'roll, acoustic blues, folk, garage punk, early hardcore, and punk rock in general.
I might list favourites from each:
Rock/roll: The replacements
acoustic blues: blind willie mctell
folk: bob dylan
garage punk: radio birdman
early hc: reagan youth
general punk: also reagan youth because i think they are kind of both.
Amphisbaena 07-26-2008, 11:40 PM I like jazz, classical piano, death metal, black metal.
I am in a grindcore band - we've opened for Megadeth and Bleeding Through.
I think this adequately describes my taste in music - varied.
evilclonier 07-27-2008, 08:46 AM I listen to most stuff: rock, metal, some indie,
Bands: HIM, Hendrix, Led Zepplin, Avenged Sevenfold, Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly, Iron Maiden, Jeff Buckley, Skunk Anansie, Seth Lakeman, Blur.
BatCountry 07-27-2008, 12:25 PM Hm. "In the End" is one of their songs that never got old for me.
I'm. Different.
I think it's the piano in the song.
If it has a piano beginning thats boring it'll get annoying for me.
Like the song Clocks by Coldplay that piano beginning
you hear that same tune over and over and over and you get annoyed.
BatCountry 07-28-2008, 12:11 PM anybody a fan of U2?
tarnished 07-29-2008, 02:52 PM I LOVE THE VELVET UNDERGROUND!!!!!!!
sorry I saw someone mention them...and I uh...may have overreacted xD
Other than them I love the rolling stones, the who, the doors, Janis Joplin, etc.
Newer things I like are; Ima Robot, Death Cab For Cutie, The Killers, The White Stripes, and the Raconteurs.

Tori Amos
PJ Harvey
The Dresden Dolls
I think that just sums up my mp3 player. :p
BatCountry 07-30-2008, 08:20 PM The Killers sounds like one of those bands that are highly influenced by U2's style
Gone Wishing 07-31-2008, 05:02 PM As far as music goes, here's my list of favorite artists:
Tori Amos
lol - Your user name and avatar kinda gives that one away... :p
Tori Amos is a personal favourite, I've used her songs as user names, too (on other sites, I've used Code Red and Digital Ghost... :)).
Silver Random 07-31-2008, 05:13 PM <<< Look sideways, and then look no further ;) Alter Bridge - Blackbird. My favourite band and favourite album (with the 1st track and the track named "Blackbird" both possible candidates for my favourite song :P)
I like "Rock" music. Some people would say "I don't like rock, i like alternative rock/ punk rock / metal / nu metal / hard metal / death metal etc..." but since i dont really know what makes what genre which, or necessarily feel the need to try and label each one, i just say "Rock." For a more accurate idea of what that is, my favourite artists :
Alter Bridge and Audioslave are my top 2, but in case you dont know what they are like some more well known of my favourites to give you a rough idea are :
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Slipknot
Foo Fighters
Rage Against The Machine
Linkin Park
tarnished 07-31-2008, 11:25 PM I find the killers to be infulenced U2 amd Springstein :D

BatCountry 08-01-2008, 12:25 PM Does anyone listen to Lostprophets?
Welsh band?
You've all at least heard the song "Rooftops" right?
Alone And Tired 08-15-2008, 06:56 PM I've heard it. A little too much if I'm honest... But I still like them. I preferred them before that album. Last Summer is a great song

Blink-182, Underoath, Anberlin, Paramore, +44, Enter Shikari, Panic! At The Disco (I wish they kept the exclaimation mark haha) and Protest The Hero. I'm getting into instrumental stuff like Andy McKee, Explosions In The Sky and And So I Watch You From Afar (You probably havent heard of these guys. They are more locally popular in where I live)
tarnished 08-15-2008, 07:24 PM Blink-182 and +44?
You must be a Travis Barker fan, correct?
Alone And Tired 08-15-2008, 07:25 PM If I'm honest it's Mark Hoppus that does it for me haha
But Travis is a great musician
ChimmyBear 08-15-2008, 10:08 PM Oh God...I listen to anything...but Rap.

(Did someone say massive Tori Amos bias?)
blink 08-16-2008, 03:38 AM I listen to tons of different genres....rock, metal, emo, acoustic, prog, classic rock, grunge, alternative, pop-punk, hard rock, screamo, funk, disco, techno, modern symphonic music, classical, dance, pop, and only a little rap.
My favorites though are Coheed and cambria, avenged sevenfold, green day, nirvana, him, muse, the used, weezer, dashboard confessional, limpbizkit, and sum 41. I own somewhere over 120 cds though.
BatCountry 08-16-2008, 12:57 PM Over 120 CDs? Wow. Kurt Cobain was the best guy there ever was. Goo Goo Dolls is the band with the most need of a name change.
Scarecrow28 08-17-2008, 09:13 PM My favorite band overall is Coheed and Cambria, followed very closely by Tool (I'm a big prog rock/prog metal fan). I also like some Linkin Park, A Perfect Cirle, Alkaline Trio, Greenday, A7X, Disturbed, and Three Days Grace.
Gannon 08-18-2008, 07:16 AM Over 120 CDs? Wow.
I own around 2000 CDs and 1000 Vinyl and counting. I add around 10 a week. I just love the hard copies and could never resort to downloading illegally or legally. I say never - I have about 5 albums or something from download.
My favourites vary from week to week but favourites recently inlcude:
Clockcleaner - Babylon Rules (80s goth influenced rock like Birthday Party and Bauhaus)
Get Well Soon - Rest Now, Weary Head (German (I think) folktronica - excellent singer-songwriting with a beguiling cover of Underworld's Born Slippy)
Murder By Death - Red of Tooth and Claw (like Johnny Cash if he listened to a lot more Soundgarden before his death)
And all time favourites:
Cooper Temple Clause - See This Through And Leave (indie rock)
Raveonettes - all - lovely 50s rock n' roll approach to modern indie songs
Joy Division - all - troubled post-punk genius
And 100s of others of course!
Torana 08-18-2008, 07:34 AM I just know you were all waiting for me to post up that my all time favourite band in the world is...
dun dun dunnnnnnnnnnnnnn...
Wait for it... wait for it!
TOOL!!! and the greatest song ever is SCHISM by TOOL! :p hehehe!
I tend to like the real heavy metal. Cannibal Corpse is ace, Morbid Angel, Tool, Weird Al Alkovic is awesome lol gotta love it. AC/DC, GNR (Sharky... shush! :p), erm... I listen to Veruca Salt and a few others that Dan has introduced me to. NOt heavey metal, but sounds alright. But I love heavy metal! It is the most relaxing music ever!
I don't mind Ludwig Van Beethoven either. (sorry if I spelt that wrong...)
Gladiatus 08-18-2008, 07:46 AM Well I will pretty much listen to anything, apart from Rap.
These are a few of my favourtie artists.
Damone
Kalomoira
Guns & Roses
Led Zeppelin
Deep Purple
REM
Meat Loaf
Kasabian
Supertramp
T. Rex
Kaiser Chiefs
The Who
A lot of "older" stuff on there, but modern too.
Fleetlord_Atvar 08-18-2008, 05:16 PM I avoid rap and some recent pop stuff as well. I don't really pay enough attention to genre to categorize the music I listen to, other than classical music and jazz.
Composers I'll listen to:
Shostakovitch
Wagner
Granger
Jazz musicians/bands:
Coltrane
Cannonball Adderly
Other:
Warren Zevon (easily my favorite artist of any)
Neil Diamond
Elton John
Bob Seger
BatCountry 08-19-2008, 12:36 PM I own around 2000 CDs and 1000 Vinyl and counting.
Stop making me jealous ;-)
I have around 30, no vinyls for me though.
I found the funniest comment on youtube yesterday
it was on the video for Psychosocial by Slipknot
"Bands like the Jonas Brothers and N Sync are way tougher than Slipknot, they are real hardcore rock"
BrinkofDawn 08-19-2008, 04:00 PM These are several bands and artists I like in no particular order:
Linkin Park, Disturbed, Celldweller, AFI, Incubus, Mindless Self Indulgence, Family Force 5, Angels and Airwaves, +44, Papa Roach, Chevelle, Atreyu, Daft Punk, Trapt, Julien-K, Coheed and Cambria, Finch, Gorillaz, Gackt, Karate High School, and The Offspring
I like a LOT of music, alot of different music too. Most of my favorites are in the Rock/Alternative category but I do like Electronic, Dance, some foreign music, Classical (very relaxing), some Hip-Hop and Rap that don't fall in to the mainstream lyrics about money and girls and cars and crap.
The only music I will never listen to is country...
*cringe*

TOOL!!! and the greatest song ever is SCHISM by TOOL! :p hehehe!
TOOL's just plain incredible. When I started listening, I only liked some of their more popular songs. But as I listened to the 2 CD's I've got from them (10,000 Days and lateralus), I've begun to like more. 10,000 days (the song) and lateralus (the song) are both amazing.
