View Full Version : What kind of chocolate do you like?
gigantes 08-08-2008, 10:37 AM traditionally i like milk chocolate with something else mixed in, like nuts, puffed rice, toffee or raisins. examples of domestic brands i'd buy would be "cadbury" and "hershey's symphony."

i never was a regular chocolate eater but recently noticed the anti-depressive effects of caffeine (yes, i'm slow) and so decided to eat more chocolate as an alternative to coffee. but because my health is not the best, i switched from the high-sugar milk chocolates to dark chocolates, which are noted in many studies to have positive health indications.
well, today i needed a little caffeine burst but found that i was out of dark chocolate. so i looked through my baking goods and pulled out some bittersweet baking chocolate and discovered... that it's good! and i found that instead of the usual smooth texture it has a grainy texture, and this was welcome because the intense, smooth, syrupy texture of candy bar chocolate can get a little oppressive.
what kind of chocolate do you like?
BatCountry 08-08-2008, 11:16 AM milk chocolate or white chocolate. no dark for me.
Daisy 08-08-2008, 11:47 AM Preferably melted on the tip of a strawberry that Johnny Depp is holding to my lips.
Two words. Lindt Truffles.
A couple more words.
I don't usually like plain chocolate, even milk chocolate. It usually needs to be mixed with something. I love orange sticks, crunch bars, hot chocolate, and once I had this spongy russian chocolate that was really good. I loved the texture, but I've learned that the spongy chocolate is actually their cheap stuff. It goes farther if you fill it with air bubbles.
Raven 08-08-2008, 12:09 PM None its all Horrible.

interesting... just like ice cream.
Cogito 08-08-2008, 01:43 PM Milk chocolate, semisweet, and dark. White "chocolate" is an abomination, and should be sued for misappropriation of the name.
Nuts are a good ingredient. So are orange or raspberry flavors. Crisped rice? Ok, but not great. Caramel only if it is fluid, not chewy.
interesting... just like ice cream.
Yeah, except somehow they manage to charge us more for the extra air in ice cream.
Still Life 08-08-2008, 02:34 PM I don't have much of a sweet tooth anymore. Carrots actually make pretty good snacks if you dip it in honey and peanut butter, lol.
But once in a while I indulge in chocolate truffles.
Two words. Lindt Truffles.
I bought Lindt truffles for a gift exchange with friends once because, well, I liked them. The friend who got the gift was kind of upset and complained that it was too - err - creamy?? And she started passing it around to everyone. I'm glad we didn't have to write our names on it, but I wished I could have got the chocolates myself :/
EyezForYou 08-08-2008, 02:40 PM White is not technically a chocolate.
It doesn't have any cocoa in it.
This thread just conjures up memories of Oompa Loompa's for some reason.
I probably love Dahl more than I love chocolate. I actually love the idea of "chocolate" and what it can be, because of the book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, therefore, milk chocolate is my favorite.
Raven 08-08-2008, 03:03 PM He's a witch, burn him!
lol seriously though I really do haye Chocolate I really despise the taste and find it sickly and not to my liking.
Nilfiry 08-08-2008, 04:28 PM I'm not really a big fan on chocolates, but I guess I'd perfer white chocolate; although, all others are fine.
Raven 08-08-2008, 04:30 PM Yuk I just hate the very taste If I eat any it makes me feel sicky.
Talako 08-08-2008, 06:58 PM I love Dove's dark chocolate.
Hersey's Special are good also, but only the mini ones. I'm not sure why the big ones taste so different.
thirdwind 08-08-2008, 07:58 PM Ferrero Rocher. I love those.

Too........creamy...........? I don't think you can even make gramatically correct sentence that involves both of those words.
gigantes 08-08-2008, 08:12 PM White is not technically a chocolate.
AFAIK white is indeed chocolate, but it's made from cocoa butter whereas traditional chocolate is made from cocoa solids.
Still Life 08-08-2008, 08:23 PM Too........creamy...........? I don't think you can even make gramatically correct sentence that involves both of those words.
Exactly. The same thing had crossed my mind.
Foxee 08-08-2008, 08:38 PM I used to prefer milk chocolate over dark chocolate. I love Peter's Ultra (it's a bulk chocolate found in candy-making supply places that you buy in huge blocks) which is a milk chocolate that is so high in butterfat that it practically melts if you breathe on it.
Dark Chocolate is less fattening and I like Hershey's Special Dark (especially with peanut butter and a glass of milk). Can't stand Dove.
Gone Wishing 08-08-2008, 09:51 PM Red Tulip Easter eggs.... might be some kind of childhood sense memory thing going on, but they are the best chocolates ever, in whatever shape they take... Thank goodness they only appear once a year.
Also, years ago I worked in a newsagency that carried quite a few gift lines as it was located in the centre of the city, including the most divine chocolate covered apricot logs... I miss them every day. :( lol
mammamaia 08-09-2008, 06:33 PM my all-time favorite [and dietary downfall!] are goobers
followed closely by:
hershey's milk chocolate with almonds
crunch
kisses [plain and almond]
snickers
turtles
thin mints/andes
m&m's
gigantes 08-09-2008, 06:49 PM oh dear, i've moved on to unsweetened baking chocolate.
this may take some getting used to. oO
My sister lives in Switzerland, and has brought back many chocolates. I prefer Swiss chocolate to American. Toberlarone (sp?) among others.
ParanormalWriter 08-09-2008, 09:23 PM White chocolate. Especially with nuts inside.
Last1Left 08-09-2008, 09:51 PM White chocolate isn't actual chocolate, right?
My favorite would have to be Crispy M&Ms and Almond Joys.

this was covered above. it's made from the cocoa bean, as are the other kinds of chocolates:

hmm..........cadbury fruit nd nut and crackle....and I LOVE caramel coated chocies.
Wreybies 08-10-2008, 09:48 AM I love Kit-Kat bars. Frozen. Yes, frozen is devine. :D
Cogito 08-10-2008, 10:45 AM I like a smidgen of semisweet chocolate in a kettle of chili. Not so much that you immediately think "Chocolate!" when you taste it, but enough that you can recognize it when you know it's there.

It's Cog's own brand of mole sauce! (pronounced moh-leh)

I might have to try that. It reminds me of a recipe I came across that listed cayenne pepper as one of the ingredients in a batch of chocolate chip cookies. Talk about yummy. It's the only way I make them now.

Yes, I've had Chicken Mole Poblano a number of times, and it did play a role in the inpiration to try chocolate in chili.
Flozzie 08-10-2008, 11:48 AM I like very dark chocolate, preferably with mint or orange flavour. *licks lips*
Regular milk chocolate is far too sweet.
Gone Wishing 08-10-2008, 11:55 AM Cog, perhaps you may have been tempted to try these - were they still available... ;)

gigantes 08-10-2008, 01:47 PM IIRC one of the original uses of chocolate was to mix it unsweetened with chili peppers in a drink. the aztecs did that, i think.

I probably would have, but Tim-Tams are not particu;arly available outside of Australia. I live about as far from the Land Down Under as you can get and still be on the same planet.
pyrox91992 08-10-2008, 07:44 PM i just love chocolate :P chocoholic here, and im not embarrassed or ashamed, i love the stuff :P
Has anybody else ever had Stephen's hot chocolate, or a chocolate orange?
Cogito 08-10-2008, 08:03 PM I've had the Chocolate Orange (Milk Chocolate and Dark Chocolate). Also the Chocolate Raspbarry (Milk & Dark also).
draciaveil 08-10-2008, 10:33 PM I love chocolate made with dutch process cocoa. I'm partial to milk chocolate, though. I really can't stand dark or white.
inkslinger 08-12-2008, 01:54 AM I maintain the opinion that any choco is good choco!
I found out today that a coworker of mine does not have a taste for chocolate.... talk about baffling. I couldn't understand it; he said he wasn't allergic, he just doesn't like chocolate. I think he's crazy.

i'm not sure if it's because of the proportion of taste receptors that people have on the tongue or because of the way the brain interprets the feedback, but some people have very different taste experiences with a given food.
a common example is cilantro or cumin- to me they are sweet and tasty but to many other people they are distinctly metallic or bitter.
ask your coworker specifically how chocolate tastes to them and you may shed some light on this matter.
