View Full Version : Well, this certainly isnt goodbye, so it must be hello.
DeadStar 08-13-2008, 08:00 PM Hello, I am Stephanie. I just turned eighteen. I love to write, though I don't think Im good, and I am not just saying that. I really hate my work, though I write all the time. Besides writing, I am a HUGE music freak. Believe me you have no idea.
DontThinkJustWRITE 08-13-2008, 08:03 PM Welcome Stephanie...you sound just like me! haha. I LOVE writing, but LOVE music soooo much more! And I'm sure your work isn't that bad (you'll have to let the other members of the forum determine that for you!). If you ever want to chat about writing or music, feel free to send me a message on my profile or via personal message. Hope to hear from you and welcome!!!
Cogito 08-13-2008, 08:28 PM Hello Stephanie, Welcome to the Writing Forums.
Hopefully you can build up your confidence here. We tend to critique work pretty aggersssively, but we demand that all responses are respectful. So you should never feel liek you are personally under attack.
Posting your own work should not be the very first thing you do here. It is really worthwhile to see what other people have done to improve their writing, and see if some of it applies to your writing as well. That is part of why we require members to review other members' work before posting their own for review. On the other hand, there are no restrictions, other than content and copyright rules, on showcasing your work in your member blog.
If you haven't explored the site yet, you should probably do so soon. Newcomers often gravitate to the Lounge, the Word Games, or the Review Room, but there is much more to be discovered if you poke in the corners. Remember to check out our FAQ (http://www.writingforums.org/faq.php) as well, and be sure to read through the forum rules (http://www.writingforums.org/showthread.php?p=101625#post101625), too, to avoid any misunderstandings or hurt feelings. Respect for one another is our principal mandate.
As for the Review Room, new joiners often wonder why we do things a bit differently on this site than on other writing sites. We emphasize reviewing as a critical writing skill. Training your eye by reviewing other people's work helps you improve your own writing even before you present it for others to see. Therefore, we ask members to review other people's writing before posting work of their own. The Review Room forums on this site, therefore, are true workshops, not just a bulletin board for displaying your work (and on that note, please only post each item for review in one Review Room forum). See this post, Why Write Reviews Before Posting My Work? (http://www.writingforums.org/showpost.php?p=65432&postcount=1) for more information.
And while you're looking around, don't forget to check out our Weekly Short Story Contest (http://www.writingforums.org/forumdisplay.php?f=75) and Weekly Poetry Contest (http://www.writingforums.org/forumdisplay.php?f=76). They actually run more than one week apiece, but any member may enter, and all members are urged to vote for their favorites.
Enjoy your stay here, and have fun!
DeadStar 08-13-2008, 08:39 PM Thanks!
I'll have to chat with you about that sometime.
Ungood 08-13-2008, 08:58 PM Hello and Welcome to the forums.
yellowm&M 08-13-2008, 09:11 PM YAY another music freak!!! I'm a huge music person too, along with being a huge writing person. For me music and writing are about equal, sometimes i'm more into music, sometimes i mor into writing, depends on my mood. feel free to talk to me about anything! and welcome to the forum :)
DarkMaiden273 08-13-2008, 10:40 PM I completly agree with most you said DeadStar. I too love to write but think I'm bad. Guess on here to find out. L.O.L. I like music a lot too, but don't have too many songs yet. Though I have to have music on and playing when I'm writing or reading or pretty much anything else or I just go crazy. J.K.

DarkMaiden273 08-13-2008, 11:11 PM Silence is not golden.
What do you mean. -Is that a quote?-
DarkMaiden273 08-13-2008, 11:12 PM Ohh never mind...blond moment.
Chris Wood 08-14-2008, 08:48 AM Hey there Dead Star Stephanie.
The music thing is a HUUUUUGGGGGEEEE plus for a writer in my view. Play it loud, long, sweet & heavy & that's good for the soul - no doubt there.
As to the downer on your work, well I can't encourage it but that's a lot better than the people who just think their work is automatically up there with the greats. Don't be too down on yourself because it's easy to look at some writing god and feel half an inch high, but don't. If you're working your thing and doing what you do, then you're set on the right course.
Besides, who's to say your work is crap? When was young I thought everything I did was either total cack or gold plated, and I usually got it the wrong way round. Now I'm slowly (underline slowly) trying to get some perspective, and a decade and a half on from where you are & it's still hit & miss for me. Hang in there lady, you're among friends.
Rastaman 08-14-2008, 09:30 AM hi and welcome
if music be the food of love then?
write on freak!
:D
i am sure u will like it here
if u dont like writing then think of it as a way to keep yourself healthy and teach everyone the truth at the same time as reading up on exactly what this truth thing is anyway?
