View Full Version : Farscape!
Banzai 10-28-2008, 01:16 PM It has come to my attention, that I am not alone on these forums in my love for this (unfortunately) cancelled series.
Personally, I think this is one of the best examples of a modern sci-fi series (along with Firefly and Battlestar Galactica [RDM]), and has a sort of charm that others such as Star Trek lack. I watched every episode, and own a good number on DVD (I'm still missing the third and fourth seasons :()
But anyway. Please feel free to reminisce about it here (since we were clogging up the photo thread). Personally, I still use frell (interchanged with frack :p), dren, hezmana and other such Farscape-isms in general day-to-day conversation :p
Wreybies 10-28-2008, 02:21 PM The participation of Jim Henson in the Farspace series made for unadulterated awesomenessitude. (Feel free to use that one without need for citation) :D
Cogito 10-28-2008, 02:52 PM I rather enjoyed the reference to Farscape in the Stargate: SG-1 episode "200".
Vala (Claudia Black) keeps pitching "borrowed" storylines to director Martin Llloyd for a Wormhole Xtreme movie; borrowed from The Wizard of Oz, Star Trek, and Gilligan's Island. Lloyd, in frustration, tells her to at least come up with one that's not immediately obvious where it came from.
Her next pitch is clearly taken from Farscape. Martin stares blankly, and finally admits, "Ok, you've got me on that one."
Carmina 10-28-2008, 03:22 PM The word "frell" will always hold a special place in my heart. I used it in my first conversation with Steve. He realized, "Oh my god! She's a geek." And we have been together ever since.
Banzai 10-28-2008, 03:24 PM Oh, I forgot to add, how does everyone feel about the planned Farscape webisodes?
Wreybies 10-28-2008, 03:34 PM I had a bit of a crush on D'Argo.
*I know. I need some therapy*

Carmina 10-28-2008, 03:35 PM I havent heard about those. I would watch them. So long as they don't disintegrate main characters in a rowboat after they finally profess their undying love...I am cool. Lamest last 30 seconds ever.
Carmina 10-28-2008, 03:37 PM Don't feel too bad Wreybies. I wanted D'argo and Chianna at the same time. I'm greedy.
Raven 10-28-2008, 03:37 PM I too liked farscape but I prefared the latter two seasons three and four. The series seemed to moved in a better direction. I would have liked to see more but hey we got four.
Oh, I forgot to add, how does everyone feel about the planned Farscape webisodes?
I didn't even know they were doing any.
Though of all the cancelled series well thats gotta be Firefly and that got 14 episodes or 13 if you count the first two as a feature Pilot.
I also loved Jericho damn I loved that show I was so gutted it came to an abrupt end in season two with seven episodes. The producers wanted to do so much more with that show but just didn't get that chance.
misaditas 10-28-2008, 03:59 PM *squeals loudly* OMG I LOVE FARSCAPE!!! *coughs*
Sorry. Total fangirl / geek here. Really you do NOT want to get me started, cos I'll go on and on about this show. And then add a little more just for good measure :D
Okay. Breathe. Calm. I am 35 and mature and adult, really I am (not).
Being the huge sci fi geek that I am and have always been after since I hid from Daleks as a child, I awaited the arrival of Farscape with bated breath. A new sci fi show. Airing in the UK! I'd died and gone to heaven (note that SG1 was only available on Sky at this point)
Never one for Crichton. I'll get that out and said now. What grabbed me was that first shot of Moya (still the prettiest spaceship ever) - and then Pilot's Den. And the DRDs were soooooo cute!
Ahem.
But yes. Absolutely a Scaper. Season 3 is my favourite, despite the cruddy ending.
Oh, I forgot to add, how does everyone feel about the planned Farscape webisodes?
Meh, basically. Unless the writers do something completely unexpected, I'm not overly bothered. We'll see. We have the upcoming comics to get through first.
Which might sound odd, considering I was just flailing over the series, but you have to understand me. And I am loyal to my Captain ;)
Banzai 10-28-2008, 04:12 PM Lol. The webisodes should be interesting. I've heard they'll follow up the events of the Peacekeeper Wars, but not from the perspectives of main characters. Though that said, the main cast have expressed an interest in cameos.
I always wanted the leather trenchcoat that Crichton wore... I still do :p I'll try and find a picture.
EDIT: Here is is :D

Wreybies 10-28-2008, 04:27 PM *I also had crush on Crichton. I always figured that my line would be, "Hey, your a human, I'm a human... what else is there? Rigel?"
misaditas 10-28-2008, 04:31 PM Nothing's been decided on in regards to the webisodes, I can tell you that straight off.
Rockne O'Bannon, who created the show, is in charge of the comics. These are based completely off the show; the first story is Rygel returning to Hyneria.
There was an awful lot of leather, wasn't there? Not complaining mind ;)
I also had crush on Crichton
You can get help for that, you know :D
Banzai 10-28-2008, 04:31 PM Haha. For a moment there I was worried you were gonna say you had a crush on Rigel :p
misaditas 10-28-2008, 04:31 PM *shudders*
Hm, hang on. I feel a change of avatar coming on...
misaditas 10-28-2008, 04:34 PM That's more like it *giggles*
Banzai 10-28-2008, 04:42 PM Hehe. Bilar Crais. What started out as a fairly one dimensional villain ended up a true hero.
misaditas 10-28-2008, 04:59 PM Bialar.
The writing was one dimensional at the beginning. The acting was anything but. He had my attention the second (microt, take your pick) he stalked on to the bridge of the Command Carrier.
But yes, while John and Aeryn were snogging in corners, I was far more interested into the morally ambiguous ex-Peacekeeper captain whose allegiences you were never quite sure of.
I'll stop there. Otherwise it's going to be a page-long post
Banzai 10-28-2008, 05:02 PM I agree. The writing didn't mature 'til the end of the first season. But the acting was phenomenal all round. The chemistry between John and Aeryn, the intial antipathy between the crew, and brooding menace of Crais. I think when it really came into its own was the end-of-season arc that introduced Scorpius (even though that arc did include Ben Browder's god-awful english accent...).
misaditas 10-28-2008, 05:12 PM I liked John and Aeryn together... until she died and came back and they carried on like nothing had happened. That was a little too bizarre and by that time David Kemper had decided that their love story was the be all and end all of the show.
Six years on and I still haven't forgiven Kemper for writing Crais out.
Then again, that's why God created fanfic :D
Wreybies 10-28-2008, 05:17 PM (even though that arc did include Ben Browder's god-awful english accent...).
So strange.... Most British actors can pull of an American accent rather decently, but even I am aware that most American actors are shameful at British accents.
I wonder why the disparity...
Carmina 10-28-2008, 05:46 PM I have heard some God-aweful American accents from British actors. It depends on which American accent they are going for. Just like with Americans trying to do British accents. There are regional accents. If you do a generic accent, it sounds generic.
I miss Ben's bad accent. I wanna go home and watch all 4 seasons now.

I agree. Most Americans who try and do British accents only seem to be aware of "upper-class twit" or "cockney". That said, the only British actor I've seen who convincingly pulled off an American accent (and yes, even as a Brit I can tell) is Hugh Laurie, in House.
Six years on and I still haven't forgiven Kemper for writing Crais out.
Oh, come on! Crais died a hero's death. Though, to be honest, I was more broken up about Talyn :( Poor kid...
Ashleigh 10-28-2008, 08:16 PM Ooohh farscape! I used to love that!
Before we had cable TV I used to watch that before the simpsons came on :D
The simpsons is rubbish now - Family guy! woooo!!
As for farscape - I can hardly remember any of their names now. All i know is the woman with the black hair and the big nose annoyed me, and I always liked the girl with the white hair. The evil guys chin always annoyed me too :D
misaditas 10-28-2008, 09:22 PM A hero's death is still death. His sacrifice didn't amount to much considering Scorpius escaped and Crichton still had the frelling wormhole technology in his head. He should have removed that first...
Personally I don't think he did die. a) we never saw the body and b) no one ever dies in sci fi. Plus we are talking about the man who had an ulterior motive to everything.
Still I would be very surprised if they brought him back. He was becoming too much of a hero and deflecting attention (gotta love show politics). Plus it looks like the webisodes will be filmed in the US, which was quite a way from Australia the last time I looked.
Although Lani might. I don't know. I've read interviews in which he's asked, but he's always been evasive (there's a question of life imitating art here... he always said the only different between Crais and himself was that Crais was crankier). Then of course, there's Pilot. In this day and age there's little restriction for voice-over work due to internet, so that's always possible.
But no one knows anything on the webisodes, other than they are still being planned. You would think three years was more than enough planning for anyone really.

Ugh, I hate Claudia Black. She's not even all that attractive -- she prances around like she's this sex goddess, but the woman looks like a horse -- and she seems very stuck up from interviews and such. At least, in contrast to the other cast members from SG-1 (I'm not really familiar with Farscape other than the fact that two of the people from Stargate Season 10 were in it...)
Gannon 10-29-2008, 03:45 AM It's rare I invest time and money in a TV show but this one got me. I like it's tongue in cheek approach to the genre, and downright imagination at times. Heck, from time to time there was even some science in this science-fiction. Henderson's creations were the cherry on the top. Though what that cartoon episode was all about I'm still not sure. Currently wading trough series 2 for the umpteenth time.
misaditas 10-29-2008, 04:06 AM Heh. Think I might have to watch some today. Season 3 and Infinite Possibilities.
Wormholes, explosions and John getting snogged by Furlow. What's not to like? :D
Banzai 10-29-2008, 04:09 AM Hehe. The "We're So Screwed" 3-parter is one of my favourites. John wears a fission bomb!
misaditas 10-29-2008, 04:24 AM I've not seen a great deal of season four. Love the last episode though, mwhaha!
There's a preview of the third comic up today. And this site doesn't have a spoiler code.
Pfft, anyway here it is (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v56/kazbaby/farscapecover3a.jpg) - er, beware spoilers?
Ashleigh 10-29-2008, 11:54 AM On the subject of accents,
What about Christian Bale?
I thought he did a good american accent for batman.
I genuinely thought he was american - mind you, I didnt recognise him from other films.
That is, when he isnt putting on that ridiculously-way-over-the-top-gruff voice :D
Banzai 10-29-2008, 12:14 PM BAT-BALE: Grrgrll farggle raar!
GARY OLDMAN: Nice to see you too. This is Aaron Eckhart, he’s the new District Attorney and eventual tragic character.
AARON ECKHART: Here’s the deal. The mobsters all gave their money to Chin Han, who has gone off to Hong Kong. We need you to go get him and bring him here so I can cut off the mob’s money supply.
BAT-BALE: Frmmrrphhl garg. Rarrawrl.
AARON ECKHART: Did you take voice coaching lessons from Jack Bauer or something? Don’t you feel like an idiot growling all of your lines? You sound like you’re gargling Michael Keaton’s balls.

Give it a read :p
Carmina 10-29-2008, 05:05 PM It actually didn't bother me that Chrichton's British accent sucked. I think it worked for the character. The character was acting, so the bad accent helps the audience go "are they gonna see thorugh the bad accent and push him out an airlock?"
misaditas 10-30-2008, 01:38 AM Oh if only.
