If you want to find an agent or a publisher I highly recommend "Writers and Artists Yearbook 2007", recommended and a bit of input submitted by J.K Rowling and some more well-knowns. Should be available at most good bookshops. Also this is the type of book, you're better off buying, so if you ever feel like you're not getting anywhere, try this :)

that only works for the uk... in the us, it's 'writers market' annual editions that provides the best listing of book publishers... they also have poets market and other permutations... check it out at their mother site, www.writersdigest.com ... or http://www.fwbookstore.com/category/writers-digest

Is this for U.s, or global?

if you're referring to the writers market, i'm not sure what they include nowadays, as i haven't used it myself, for years... i'm sure you can find out with a visit to their site:

www.writersmarket.com/

for agents, you'll find listings on sites of AAR and WGA...

www.aar-online.org
www.wga.org

and writer's digest puts out a very good listing book annually ['guide to literary agents']...

for screenwriters, the 'hollywood creative directory' is the ultimate source for listings of everyone who's anyone in the us film industry...

I don't recall exactly, but I have an older copy of this. I think it was mostly market's in the US, with some overseas, but mostly the US.

Hi. I’ve just finished writing a movie script. Do you have any suggestions on where I should sell it or publish it and get at least some notice? Thanks!

Get yourself a copy of Writers' and Artists' Yearbook 2008 (if you're in the UK), or 2008 Writers Market, and have a look through the agents section. Look for ones who specialise in fantasy (or at least don't state they don't deal with it). It should give a brief summary of what you need to submit, which is generally a cover letter, a synopsis, and a few sample chapters (but check what they ask for first!). Send it off, along with a stamped and addressed envelope for them to reply with, and wait for replies. Be prepared for a lot of rejections- it takes a lot of luck and patience to be accepted.

Also, if you're going to submit to an agent or publisher, do a google search on them first. Some agencies and publishers are quite unreputable, and try to take advantage of naive young writers. Be very suspicious of anyone who asks you to pay anything upfront- it's probably a scam.

If you're friend has any more complex questions, you should probably get him to sign up here himself :p

There are tons of articles and advice out there on locating an agent to represent an author's work. One of the main things that is a red flag is an agent that charges fees up front--especially reading fees. Some legit agents do charge for postage, but not a lot of them.

The writers market listed is a good source to start with. Often a local library may have it. There is an online version that is more up to date. For fantasy and SF, if while at the library, check to see if they carry Locus Magazine. (Online Version of Locus Magazine (http://www.locusmag.com/)) The magazine publishes, among other things, who sold a Fantasy or SF novel to whom, and who represented the sale. That will confirm the list of agents who have the connections necessary.

Don't forget to double check with Preditors & Editors (http://anotherealm.com/prededitors/)

If you want references to some useful articles on finding an agent, let me know. Some folks say it's more difficult to secure a reputable agent than it is to secure a reputable publisher.

Hope this helps.

Terry

it should be noted that it's a canadian site for freelance online article/web copy publishing, not print... and not for fiction...

Some of the basic stuff, like grammar and how to write a query letter, has worked for me in the US. Though yeah, some of the major parts of it deal with Canadian magazines and such.
