Hey, that's cool. I suppose my question was twofold though. As in, 1) why did you join and 2) why did you join writingforums.org as opposed to another writing forum. :D

Mine is two fold.

A.) Compare this site to my writing site (this is way better, and don't worry i would never steal any thing this site has already, i.e. site layout)

B.) To share my work amongst other writers.

1) I joined in the hopes of improving my writing skills through other's critique of my work. I understand that this is a two way street, so of course if you read and critique, i will do my upmost to return the favor.

2) I like this site because the natives are friendly, and also I tried other sites and even when I would critique others they did not return the favor. I got immediate feedback here, and that is a definite plus! When you put your work out there and you notice people are reading but not saying anything, its not a very warm and fuzzy feeling, if you know what I mean. You put your heart and soul into your work, and then people stare, but say nothing...

Hey, that's cool. I suppose my question was twofold though. As in, 1) why did you join and 2) why did you join writingforums.org as opposed to another writing forum. :D1. I'm looking for advice on publishing, and also I'm starting an editing business. So, to both advertise and to get advice.

2. I didn't just join here. I joined several.

I joined writingforums.org for a few reasons but principally because I want to improve as a writer. I, like lioness, believe this is a great site for critiquing the works of others and seeking critique on my own work. Both will hopefully improve my writing. thanks for creating it Lpspider,

i joined this site aiming to learn more about different forms of poetry, to improve on my writing skills and to be able to share my poetry with others whom may appreciate it and not judge me on what i write.

1) I first stumbled across this site from doing a google search. When I compared this to some of the others (I didn't actually join because it was top of google's list) I found this to be much more attractive because of a lack of membership. Sounds weird I know but there are times when I just can't be bothered when there's so much "traffic" to manouver in forums that seem overcrowded. I don't mind that as long as I have gotten used to being an earlier member of a forum before it starts to get real popular. By then I won't actually feel uncomfortable in a typical newbie situation.

2) Ease of use. The layout is simple and straightforward. Everything is easy to navigate through. The type of thing that would put me off more than anything else (regardless of membership numbers) is navigation. I'm quite lazy in that respect :D

3) I hope to contribute to the site. Currently, I'm writing an essay I hope to submit that would be the first of many. It's 'lecture', if you will, is about character construction. So far I have seen many members here asking for advice on how to construct their stories, or they're having problems with character development etc, etc. So I hope to be able to post some articles sometime soon. Even though I don't always take my own advice, hopefully, and with including these weekly writing groups tasks, I'll be much more disciplined to writing 'properly' (whatever that actually means).

4) I'm actually trying to learn how to critique. I've never done it before and so I'd like to learn how to do it with as close to a professional atittude as possible instead of merely offering my personal opinion on other people's works. This won't include other member's poetry though. It sounds kinda weird but I've never felt comfortable with critiquing poetry. It just doesn't feel right. There's no actual right or wrong way with poetry I guess so it doesn't really validate the necessity of critique.

Anyway, I'm blathering.

~~Out.

We all know why we joined, 'cause we like writing and it was the first site that pooped up on the cool thing. and to of course, bask in the presence of the great powerful ME.

I joined 'cause I hoped to start up a rp section 'cause rping keeps me writing- it's about the only motivation I've got left- well actually now I'm starting to get motivated again.:D I'm sneaky like that. Check your wallet, is it missing?

Well, I used to be a member of other writing forums, but many became unconstructive and I needed somewhere to go where I could concentrate on my writing again. My friend suggested this place, I joined and, although I have not been here for very long, I like the community. The critiques look detailed (even though I have not yet received one), too, which is always a great plus for any site.

I'm here as well as several other places, and to be honest, this stands out as a great community, largely because the natives are friendly and the site is simple to navigate.

The quality of writing is favourable compared to many sites, and everyone seems a lot more relaxed.

It's so nice here, I may even move in permanently!

I joined to post some of my work for feedback and to become a member of a solid forum such as this that deals with many aspects of writing and has members that are more than willing to critique others' work. I also wanted to hear some first hand experience on publishing and looking for agents and so far I have been pleased with the results.

I certainly plan to stay.

I joined because I am the only native speaker of English within a ten mile radius of my apartment (in a highly populated area, I might add) and I would like to share the burden of slogging through a novel with people who speak the same language as me.

This is exactly what you want from a workshopping forum - to gain access to people who are better than you. The problem comes when you reach the same level as the better members and find you gain little from continued membership, a problem that all forums experience to some degree. There's a point beyond which the returns are small. Still, until then it's a worthwhile exercise.

Cheers,
Rob

I joined as I've visited many literary discussion groups and this one seemed more convivial and less pretentious than most. Of course I also joined to hone my writing. Brazen as I am though, A third reason fro joining was because I host my own, less well-established and professional, site to very similar effect.

Although I would hasten to add I am categorically not here to pilfer members.

Until next we meet.

I joined because a friend (cough, Ari, cough) told me about it. I had only just gotten the internet (don't ask) and wanted something to do, 'meet' other people and get feedback on my novel. I also get pointers that leave me going 'oh!' and send me back to the drawing board to work on my stuff so that I improve. It is aslo a fun place to hang out as well! so that's why I joined! It's a good site!

I joined because this site is more active than the other writing sites I'm on [or, if the same amount of active a little more, um, writing oriented]. And because SnipSnap showed up here [sorry man, don't know your name] and so that in itself is a pretty good recommendation.

I have only just joined, but my main reasons for choosing this forum were;

I want to write, and be among other writers, exchanging feedback and learning from each other.

I need to learn a lot more about agents and publishers.

Out of the forums I've checked out so far, it seemed the friendliest, and the format is the same as the book forum I belong to, so easy to navigate.

I am having a trialing month with another writing forum, and will see how that goes, but some of the threads get a bit heated, so I may opt out. However, I've only just started the trial, so will research their site more thoroughly.

I joined because I know I'm no professional in writing but I enjoy doing it nonetheless. There are plenty of people who aren't professionals at what they do but live it out to its fullest. I'm an aspiring writer seeking help from others who know what they're doing. Family and friends aren't all that likely to give you meaningful critisism or anything. Chances are they'll tell you it's great. No matter how nuch of a complete wreck they truely thought it was, if you know what I mean. I enjoy reading others work, and critiquing it. There are many reasons and I could go on and on...but hey who wants to read my ramblings? :)

2 I used to be on writingforums.com but it went 'belly-up' and is down. I had a lot of my work there and a lot of helpful people. However to my greatest surprise and pleasure, people comment back faster As Lioness1612 said

When you put your work out there and you notice people are reading but not saying anything, its not a very warm and fuzzy feeling, if you know what I mean. You put your heart and soul into your work, and then people stare, but say nothing...

I completely agree and cannot agree more. It's a sort of dread. Especially when what you've wrote sits and grows staler by the minute as time continues to tick onwards. It almost makes you wonder...Was it really that bad? Eventually someone will write back but it takes ages. I'm glad to see people are more delighted and quick to answer than my last sight. :D

Like other devotees of the written word I need a place to practice...throw out ideas and see if they are acceptable (and how to salvage them). Although very new to this site I find everyone very friendly and helpful....doesn't hurt that there are more than a few familiar names from another site that seems to have disappeared? I came here because as long as I can remember, I've wanted to be able to write well. I'm fairly adept at technical writing, but have never pushed myself enough to work on my fiction.

I don't see myself pushing ahead without being around others who are also striving to improve their craft. And I also know I'll never learn much from self-criticism, any more that I could lovemaking by - well, you get the picture.

The notion of the solitary writer mastering the art of writing just by laying down thousand of pages is nonsense. As in any other endeavor, feedback is essential, as well as a willingness to set aside one's ego and listen to what others have to sayt about your efforts.

One simple reason, this place looked friendly and on another (i'll leave out the name of it) writing forum they where very unfriendly and where betten as children... some 69 year old was saying things like 'You will never work in the writing world, you are hopeless' to a 14 year old!
