View Full Version : Books you are hoping to tackle Jaclyn 04-01-2007, 02:43 AM 1) Don Quixote by Miguel de Cervantes 2) Frankenstein by Mary Shelley 3) Strangers by Dean R. Koontz Sayso 04-02-2007, 02:44 AM I've got a copy of Essays and Poems by Ralph Waldo Emerson that I would love to be able to read AND understand. I think I know what he's saying but why does he have to take so long to do it? onyxprop 04-02-2007, 01:08 PM Wuthering Heights (can never get passed first 50 pages) Gannon 04-03-2007, 01:10 AM Jane Eyre, Pygmalion and the Falconry: The Essential Guide Crazy Ivan 04-05-2007, 09:04 PM Catch 22. I've been whittling away at it since August, putting it down and picking it up at random. It is good. I will finish it. Someday... Domoviye 04-06-2007, 10:39 AM The Book of Five Rings - Miyamoto Musashi (I've read the most interesting parts, now I need to read the rest) On War - Carl Von Clausewitz (I've owned the book for a few years, but things always come up before I can read it. And I forget about it when I have time.) The Prince - Niccolo Machiavelli (I actually gave away my copy to a friend when I left university. So I need to pick it up again. Like 'On War' I keep meaning to read it, but things kept coming up whenever I started it. So I've only read about mercenaries and how to deal with conquered cities.) SnipSnap 05-31-2007, 09:50 AM 1) Lord of the Rings [i have the entire book, and the misunderstood, sanctioned trilogy. On page 120 something or other.] 2) Planning on finishing all the stephen king books w/ gerald's game and finally finishing the dead zone over the summer 3) The Count of Monte Cristo [again] 4) Anthem by _____ If anyone could tell me who writes this ... it would make my search for the book much easier. :D 5) Othello. Yes, the one by Shakespeare 6) The Nicholas Nickleby one by Dickens. Heather Louise 05-31-2007, 09:55 AM The Historian by Elizabeth ______, it really blags head. Alice in Wonderland, Through the Looking Glass by Lewis Carrol, it also really blags head but i feel as if i should read it as it is a classic. Crazy Ivan 05-31-2007, 03:11 PM Ha! I finished Catch 22! Oh yeah-- I rock-- uh huh-- go me--- uh huh- ...er, what, you don't like the victory dance? So anyway, now I need to pick out a new long book to attack. I'm going to randomly stab at Time's Eye by Arthur C. Clarke, although I'm not sure if it's actually a really long book. However, I'm told there's lots of physics and science-y stuff, so it ought to keep me occupied on any upcoming plane rides. xx._bareyoursoul 06-13-2007, 02:42 PM I'm currently tackling Anne Bishop's The Black Jewels Trilogy. I lucked out and found them all in one volume, so I have about 800 pages to get through. I also have to read Fever Pitch by Nick Hornby and Love in a Time of Cholera by the end of the summer for my AP English class next year. I'd also like to squeeze in the final installment of the Troy Game series by Sara Douglass sometime this summer. I've got a lot of reading to do. Haha. Crazy Ivan 06-13-2007, 02:54 PM Still working on Time's Eye. Now I also want to "tackle" Vellum by Hal Duncan, Wicked by Gregory Maguire, and Self-Made Man by Norah Vincent. (I have a bunch of others I'm reading, but I felt those were the ones that deserved the honor of having to be "tackled.") Daniel 06-14-2007, 07:21 PM I actually have a pile of books sitting there for me to read. Like 10. I don't recall any particular titles. Kit 06-15-2007, 11:17 AM This is going to be a really weird choice since I disagree with what he did but: Mein Kampf - Adolf Hitler We often talk about it in my history class and i've read a couple of extracts from it in English but i've wanted to read it for a while because we're studying the holocaust for my A2 History, and at GCSE I studied his rise to power. RustyHicks 06-15-2007, 11:56 AM Going to try and tackle "Hannibal" By Thomas Harris. I read Red Dragon and Silence, but breezed through Hannibal cause I got it from the library and it needed to be returned:mad: Harry Potter. Just bought the first five, now going to settle into them and see how they are:) Kit 06-15-2007, 12:28 PM Oooohhh were those any good? I have them on hold at the library, should be there next tuesday :P Cogito 06-15-2007, 12:51 PM I really enjoy the Harry Potter series. There is plenty of depth even for seasoned readers; it's not just for kids! I'm eagerly awaiting the seventh and final installment, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollow. sashas 06-16-2007, 12:24 AM Actually, I've always found the Harry Potter books to be not for kids (even though I've read just the second and the fourth part). People die in it, there is lotsa dark magic and stuff...maybe that's why its so popular with adults too... And for reading, well...I've got about 15 books sitting by my bedside...Get Shorty, State of Fear, The Pelican Brief, The Bear and the Dragon, Dreamcatchers. Then there's the literary stuff...Catch-22, The Plague, Easy Rider and Raging Bull (that's non-fiction), 100 Years of Solitude, Waiting for Godot basically, I got my hands full... RustyHicks 06-16-2007, 09:26 AM Boy, do you ever have your hands full sashas. Kit, I haven't gotten around to reading Harry Potter yet, just broke open the Hannibal book. You'll probably end up reading Harry Potter before I do :) satisverborum2003 06-19-2007, 03:57 AM I'm hoping to tackle "the tin drum" by Gunther Grass and also "Lord of the rings" by Tolkien. Although I enjoyed the films enormously, I found the second half of the book to be too boring to read but one of these days I'll read the trilogy... PrincessGarnet 06-19-2007, 06:23 AM 1) 2) Frankenstein by Mary Shelley Oh Frankenstein is great! I am thinking of re-reading it. I am hoping to get 'the idiot' by that russian writer, damn i can never spell it right... Dvstoyesky? Just now 'Dracula'-(Bram Stocker) is creeping me out, but it's so good I can't stop reading it, also wish I had never seen that stupid film 'van helsing' as i keep thinking of that when i read his name. Also reading Pride and Prejudice, it's a little make belief but it's nice. Bick 06-19-2007, 02:21 PM I have a few that I bought and have yet to read thanks to school :x 1) The Shadow of the Wind (I've read the first chapter and was loving it, but then yeah. Got caught up in school.) 2: The Green Mile 3: Monet (Erm, it's basically a huge biography with tons of photo's of his art.) 4: Roots 5: Hannibol Uprising... i think that's its name. SnipSnap 06-25-2007, 10:52 AM I am currently on Chapter 2 of the Lord of the Flies. It's a disturbingly fascinating book, yet rich in boringness. :D Ah yes, that would be down to the detail, he does tend to go into it :P However, casting that aside, it's a great read and it's worth it, even if you may feel drowsy at times! Ah yes, Great Dickens! Oh and I recommend Oscar Wilde strongly.. I was enthralled( if that's the right word) when listening to someone read out a piece from it, some great stuff. Kit 06-28-2007, 02:28 PM Boy, do you ever have your hands full sashas. Kit, I haven't gotten around to reading Harry Potter yet, just broke open the Hannibal book. You'll probably end up reading Harry Potter before I do :) Sorry I didn't make that very clear... I was asking for your opinion on the Hannibal books. I've read all of the Harry Potters - I love them :D Max Vantage 06-28-2007, 02:50 PM As many factual books on both the American Civil War and the American War of Independence. Adri<3 06-28-2007, 10:17 PM I miserably failed my first attempt at the lord of the rings trilogy but I think I might be able to take it on now...well at least i hope so. I've been told they're really good :) Michael Allan 06-30-2007, 06:16 AM ...failed my first attempt at the lord of the rings trilogy... Did you read The Hobbit? (I think that's what he calls it.) It's a sort of prelude to the trilogy, and an easier read. Jolly 07-03-2007, 12:14 AM 1)Johnathan Strange and Mr. Norrel. I had read about half of it when...I just stoped. Must pick this back up. 2) Dhlargen(I don't think I spelled that right) Been seeing this book for years, I will buy it...one day. 3)Ink:The Book of All Hours. Both of them are that kind of 'pick it up when I feel like it' thing when you never actually end up finnishing them. I just finnished The Devine Comady and that was brilliant. :D Kit 10-25-2007, 03:17 AM I haven't actually had chance to read many books recently :( Like... none. Hopefully, I'll be able to read something somewhen soon. Lily 10-27-2007, 10:53 AM 'The Catcher in the Rye', I really need to read this one. Other than that there's of course Doctor Zhivago, War and Peace, Anna Karenina, Gone with the Wind, other misc books by Orwell, Asimov and Bradbury. MarcG 11-05-2007, 03:03 PM The Stranger War and Peace Notes from the Underground Animal Farm Anna Karenina My amazon.com shopping cart :p Notes is going to be easy after reading Dostoevsky's monsters otherwise known as "novels". I've seen smaller dictionaries. lessa 11-20-2007, 05:59 AM I am waiting for the library to get 'The Tenderness of Wolves' in for me. It is a mystery set in long ago Canada. I am hoping it will hold my attention. Haven't found much to do that lately. has anyone heard anything about this book or read it themselves. PrincessGarnet 11-20-2007, 09:27 AM The Stranger War and Peace Notes from the Underground Animal Farm Anna Karenina My amazon.com shopping cart :p Notes is going to be easy after reading Dostoevsky's monsters otherwise known as "novels". I've seen smaller dictionaries. surely you mean Tolstoy? Notes from the underground is tiny. -------------------------------------------------------------------- I can't wait until my essays are handed in. i'm taking the week after it off and going to spend so much time reading :) I'm going to look into fiction from Africa about AFrica - to keep in some line with my studies, if anyone has any recommendations? SnipSnap 11-20-2007, 06:37 PM A Portrait of the Artist As A Young Man - James Joyce Of Mice and Men - Steinbeck The Bell Jar- Sylvia Plath Don Quixote- Miguel Cervantes de Svaadra Pincher Martin- William Golding The Fountainhead- Ayn Rand Has anyone read any of these? MarcG 11-21-2007, 03:07 PM surely you mean Tolstoy? Notes from the underground is tiny. Ah, no. Dostoevsky's "big three" C&P, Brothers K, and Demons - are some of the biggest novels I've ever read. I do realize it's tiny - at around 100 pages, it's roughly 1/10th of the size of Brothers Karamazov. Although I do plan on getting War and Peace and Anna Karenina. ;) No idea about African literature. Not sure what's been translated. Of Mice and Men was great. The ending.. well, the ending was good. Very good. lessa 11-22-2007, 04:17 PM I just read in the news that a school board has banned a book for being anti-god. So obviously I want to read it and see what the fuss is about. Philip Pullman -- the golden compass. We have the other two in the series so I will get to see what the fuss is about. Dom and Don have both said it is a pretty good series. So we shall see.
