View Full Version : Seven ands in a row.
The Spartan 04-12-2007, 01:41 PM Hi,
An oldie, perhaps you've come across it before - but can you give me a grammatically correct sentence, in context, that contains seven consecutive 'ands' in a row..?
mammamaia 04-12-2007, 06:52 PM 'consecutive' and 'in a row' would mean with no words in between... i doubt you meant that...
if you meant as in between a series of phrases, or items, or whatever, it would not be all that hard to do, grammatically... but most examples wouldn't be very good, writing style-wise...
Gannon 04-13-2007, 01:15 AM I suspect the 'ands' he's talking about are not exclusively conjunctions rather parts of larger words such as 'hands'. He'd be asking for a sentence or end of one that contain 7 words all which contain a run of those four letters - and no I don't know the answer.
The Spartan 04-13-2007, 02:26 AM No - I do mean exactly this:
"and and and and and and and" in a gramatically correct and meaningful sentence.
Crazy Ivan 04-13-2007, 03:03 PM Uhh...you could have a frightened person stuttering, but beyond that, it's pretty hopeless.
I can, however, give you "Buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo buffalo".
Seriously. That's grammatically correct.
The Spartan 04-13-2007, 03:56 PM  So fatalistic - It is possible - I'll give you all a couple of days before I put you all out of your collective misery.
mammamaia 04-13-2007, 04:05 PM here's one with 5:
The landlord of a pub called The Pig And Whistle asked a signwriter to make a new sign. When he saw it he thought that the words were too close together so he said to the signwriter "I want more space between Pig and And and And and Whistle".
The Spartan 04-14-2007, 04:57 AM you're on the right track - mine is an extension of the same idea - 4 ands as nouns.
Damn your hide !! Well done.
mammamaia 04-14-2007, 05:23 PM i doubt you can pull it off... stop being coy and come across with the goods! ;-)
Torana 04-14-2007, 06:34 PM I made an attempt at this but failed miserably and cannot see how it can be done, although mammamaia I am quite impressed that you managed 5. If this can be done Spartan I would be very interested in seeing it.

Daniel 04-14-2007, 07:41 PM Oooh. "Ands" as nouns. Clever.
Hmmm... difficult. I was impressed with the five and i'm sure there is a way to make that same example work with 7... somehow...
Crazy Ivan 04-15-2007, 06:41 AM *ahem*
Wouldn't the sentence 'I want to put two hyphens between the words Pig and And, and And and Whistle in my Pig-And-Whistle sign' have been clearer if quotation marks had been placed before Pig, and between Pig and and, and and and And, and And and and, and and and And, and And and and, and and and Whistle, and after Whistle?
*bows*
Well that's a lot of ands... showoff lol :D
mammamaia 04-15-2007, 05:24 PM and makes little sense... but nice try...
Crazy Ivan 04-16-2007, 02:53 PM Sure it does. If each hyphen can be subsituted with "and" (Because that's what it's being used as," and you want to place something between each and and "and" (or hyphen)- it means you'll need one in between Pig and and, and and and and, and and and And, and And and and, and and and Whistle. (Or whatever, I was half-asleep when I wrote that, and now I can't get back into the right state of mind to figure it all out again. It's one of those things like when adults have five cans of beer and think an idea sounds perfectly sensible, only to wake up next morning and realize beer soup or playing Chicken with trains wasn't so sensible after all.)
mammamaia 04-16-2007, 06:56 PM yup!
HeinleinFan 04-17-2007, 03:04 AM Ye gods! Just - ye gods!
You guys . . . *shakes head*
Truly, you are strange folk, and I mean that in the best possible way.
The Spartan 04-17-2007, 03:48 PM Someone's got conjunctive-itus.
But seriously, excellent 'and' skills. :p
Crazy Ivan 04-17-2007, 05:37 PM What was your solution (which I have beaten the pants off of?)
...[/shameless bragging. >.> ]
The Spartan 04-19-2007, 07:30 AM Mine was a paltry 7 ands - again sign painting, but with an amateur painter not leaving enough room between ands for names.
Wreastling Tag-teams.
Joe-Bloggs and The Hammer Vs. Sir Ravealot and ButtKicker
The Lord of Cheese and The Executioner Vs. Big Pete and the Hamcrusher.
Leading to: "You idiot, you haven't left enough room between and and and, and and and and, for the names. Now I'll have to do it over."
Of course, if your life was empty enough, you could extend it forever...:D
King Gareth 05-06-2007, 01:55 PM Well I normally try and use commas more often than the word "and".
heyharris1 09-28-2007, 10:23 AM how about this
"And,And,And,And,And,And,And,"Micheal yelled, from birth, he never could say diana's name correctly and always just called he And.
Weaselword 09-28-2007, 10:29 AM I managed 8.
"In Middle English, there was no difference between & and and, and and and &, and this situation persists in the present day."
mammamaia 09-28-2007, 03:08 PM bravo!... the new champ...
Torana 09-29-2007, 02:44 AM Here I was thinking that it was truely imposible :p well done!
