View Full Version : Temporal anomalies

I've seen some strange behavior recently, and wonder if anyone else has noticed it.

Sometimes the thread list will give a user name and last modified indicator such as "5 mins ago". But when I click on the link to see the new post, the only posting in the thread was much older, such as "3 hours ago".

My first thought was that it could be a time zone glitch. but that doesn't look right either; the example I was just looking at would be posted from GMT, and I'm in US EDT time zone (5 hours difference).

Specifically, I most recently saw this in the threads list for The Lounge, in three threads started by Hull's Raven. I have seen it in other forums, however.

Has anyone else see this, or have any ideas why it might be happening?

Nothing to worry about.

We just call it a slight Temporal Anomaly with the shifting in time.

Seriously though its nothing to worry about. :)

Whaddya mean pathetic????

I've thoroughly enjoyed travelling with the Doctor, and still do (limited only by what gets bought by stations I can watch on this side of the Pond),

LOL I love the Doctor it goes from strength to strength.

Especially since the arrival of David Tennant. So much better than Christopher Eccleston.

Good heavens! It really IS a time loop. Every hour it jumps back to 1 minute in the thread list, but ONLY if there are no replies to the initial post.

Ok I'll look into the problem.

If I understand correctly what you're describing, I'm not experiencing it. Is anyone else?

It's not a big deal, in any case. Just an odd quirk I've seen a few times. Just the engineer in me obsessing over details...

Looks like a slight glitch nothing major but I have to say I've just this minute noticed these effects. And the Doctors no where to be seen.

So let me get this straight. You've viewing the threads in a forum or forum home and it says last post X minutes ago. You view the thread and it's actually older than that?

Raven

Well just in the last 20 mins for me but yeah.

And it only seems to happen if the thread contains only one post with no replies.

Earlier today, Hull's Raven posted three new threads right around the same time, and they were all exhibiting this behavior. People responded to two of them, and the behavior of those two "normalized", but the third with no responses continued to behave oddly.

Ah, I have an idea of what this might be.

I installed a plug-in (a modification, a hack) that basically "autobumps" a thread to the top. This is to make sure it doesn't get buried without being seen.

The date issue is just a bug. hmm...

I'd noticed it too and it's not a new thing. I thought it was just me though and a dodgy computer so chose to ignore it.

Hmmm... I guess that means my explanation is incorrect. hmmm...

I don't know if this will help (or this will confuse you even more), but just to clarify on what Cogito is saying. New threads without any replies don't appear on the main forum page. i.e. the home page. But they do show up on the specific forum page. i.e. the poetry page.

I don't find it a problem personally and for me it makes the site almost human in it's qirkiness.;)

I actually noticed that a poem posted 5 hours ago stated on the forum main page that it had been posted 4 minutes ago...after reading Lpspiders explanation I would say that it is quite possible that if he has set up a mod to automatically bump a piece that has had no responses to it, then that would be why it is doing so.

I think it is great though, really helps with sifting through the posts to find those who have missed out getting a comment.

Thanks Torana.

For now I won't do anything about this since it doesn't seem so major. If I start noticing it I'll look into it more.

A friend of mine running a Vbulletin forum with a similar mod saw the same effects, so I think its most likely the plug-in. I don't think its major though, the benefit of "autobumping" threads definately outweighs the annoyance of the times being wrong lol :D

This seems to be happening again (if it ever stopped!) Anyone else?
