I believe giving reputation points is little-known (judging on the fact that it took me a bit to learn of it), but it is kinda cool. However, I would just like to say that people should say who gave these e-props. I don't know why, but it just annoys me not knowing.

OCD is fine with me. OCD is fine with me. OCD is fine with me. Tranquilizer is fine with me. Zzzzzzzz.

Is that what those green squares are underneath the handle?

What are they for anyway and what do you get for having a high one (no punnic penis jokes please :D )?

Banzai
06-28-2007, 02:48 PM
Yes, that's what the green squares are. And the reputation just gives you an inflated ego :D

I know that they can, but I'm not sure if people knew that it doesn't actually say the name. There is no real reason why they should hide while giving you rep... I don't believe anyone else can see the comments anyway.

Or can they?

All shall be revealed. But it's not compulsory to leave a message and it's also anonymous unless you decide to state who you are in a comment.

I suppose that's probably true, and might discourage any attempt at hit-and-run sniping, i.e. giving disapproval rep points in a sneaky manner.

I'm pretty sure Daniel could look to see who has submitted rep points if there were an issue, and probably any Super Moderators could also.

Max, I meant that no one else can see the rep that you've been given. I know you can see your own.

Daniel

Everyone can see everyone's rep, but you can't see comments left to other users.

We don't show who leaves rep to avoid fights based on negative rep.

Yes it can be done. But we don't because again as Daniel says it can cause bad feeling if you've been given negative rep. Because then everyone will start giving those who gave negative rep will give the one who gave it a negative rep and thus it becomes out of hand.

When people register on the sight, they can enter the username of the person who directed them to the sight. Referrals is simply the number of people whom you have referred to the sight.

Hehe.

You have to get "100 points." It depends on how much power each person has to give rep. The more rep you have, the more power you have to give. Make sense?

Yup. There are a few factors, including your own rep, how long you've been a member, etc.

Currently it's Cogito, followed by Hulls. You can view the rep stats here (http://www.writingforums.org/statistics.php?forum=0&stats=users&show=10).

Just because they have the most rep doesn't mean they necessarily give the most rep power.

Daniel

Heh.

If the reputation is gray that's because the user who gave it didn't have enough "rep power" to actually affect your reputation.

If this is the case that's usually because they're a new user.

I have to say I'm a little concerned about people abusing the reputation system.

For example, from the "Crime/Vigilante" topic, I just received this little bundle of joy:

08-02-2007 08:59 PM Trouble causer
08-02-2007 08:59 PM Idiot trouble causer
08-02-2007 08:59 PM Pathetic

This was all obviously done by the same person- I'm not sure who, seeing as they weren't brave enough to leave a name. (Although Reaper would be the logical suspect.) But aren't these snippets of unbridled hate kind of...unneccessary? If you're going to rant at me for something that's not really rant-y to begin with (I said that the topic might become a home for flaming and that people shouldn't kill other people, which apparently made people angry), do you really have to say the same basic thing three times over for one thing- in flame form, no less?

What with vendettas and poor decisions that members might be making, the reputation system is beginning to worry me. Has anyone else come across grudge-jobs like this?

I have no right to agree or disagree with something I cannot view myself, but some people really need to grow up. Everyone has their opinion, and they should learn to tolerate it, if not respect. People often go over the limits and act very silly. You may view the associated thread with this recent commenting and justify whether these reports were correct. I am not defending Crazy Ivan, I'm merely trying to convey the excruciation of this situation and to enforce the validity of his statement.

Well, I checked and it is actually three different people. The same person can't give the same person rep again without giving it to a certain number of people first.

I think it's obvious that whoever left the rep co-ordinated it because of the date. Don't let it bother you though.

adamant
08-02-2007, 10:37 PM
I knew it had to be impossible for one person. Though I bet Comrade Ivan already knows the three people who might have done it. LP, I don't believe you have much to worry about in the way of flaming though -- he was one of the people going against vigilantism. :)

I agree. With most of mine I can figure out who gave me them (I still have one negative rep which I can't figure out who gave it to me though...). And I always put my name on rep I give out- but I haven't actually given out any negative rep yet.

Panther
08-03-2007, 05:04 AM
Crazy Ivan I gave you a bad rep for your post in my crime // vigilante thread. I gave you that because i disapproved and we have the choice of approved or disapproved. I make no hiding that fact. It was done because your comment was all wrong and immature of not understanding the full upset and grief my friends and family are suffering from that.

I will not take it back. And if i risk never receiving good rep again so be it. But I will gladly say I gave you a bout and did not confer with anyone

Banzai
08-03-2007, 05:12 AM
I think people are putting too much importance in the rep thing. It's supposed to be a bit of fun, and personally, I just use it to reward the people who take the time to read and critique my writing.

Night Haunter
08-03-2007, 05:14 AM
Well i see no wrong in bad rep if its done fairly and Panther in his defence has owned up to it. he certainly can't give it again for sometime now. Just make sure you all remember if your to issue bad rep it be done fairly and for a post that warrants bad rep otherwise its done out of spite

Banzai
08-03-2007, 05:17 AM
If you are going to give bad rep, you should be sure of giving an explanation, and identifying yourself, I think.

Night Haunter
08-03-2007, 05:21 AM
yes that is the least you can do. Bad rep can upset members and at least if a name is given then they can make an understanding of the bad rep.

Crazy Ivan

Alright, looking back on this, I realize my post was insanely whiny. I apologize for getting disgruntled over nothing. Reputation doesn't really matter to me; I should know better.

However, Banzai has picked out the one grain of fact from my annoying complainathon: If people left notes on who gave reputations, it would probably cut down on paranoia/general disgruntlement.
