Continually trying to gain perspective on this world I am forced to accept two things as truth: We don't know what we are doing here and there is a tragic beauty in this uncertainty.

To capture an idea with words is to become closer to understanding that which cannot be understood. If I can just get close to something greater than myself I think I will be alright.

One might say that to capture an idea with words is to abstract it, and therefore understand it less, that a sorta negative Kantian modernism exists in language and should be avoided.
After all, reality is reality, and arbitrarily assigning it with symbols (like language) distorts and separates it from real experience (the senses?).

Just wanted to point that out.

You make a good point, Mango, but what is understanding really? Finding the right words to describe an emotion, event or anything really is putting into a context that means something to the writer. That is why I think the process of writing is often a process of discovering truth within the one's own mind.

Complete understanding is impossible - you are part of the workings of the Universe, and the Universe cannot understand itself, because that understanding would also have to encompass that self-comprehension, so it continues to elude grasp.

However, if the goal is simply to understand as much as possible, to comprehend more each day, then certainly expressing it in words is a good start.

So why not begin by exploring and knowing the aspects of this site, and the diverse people who comprise it.
