View Full Version : The Upgrade

The software upgrade went smoothly. Currently, I'm still working on the new design, making some tweaks, and customizing the new software.
There's still a lot to do from an administrator perspective, so expect new features and changes throughout the day. Eventually we'll have a style similar to the previous one (instead of the current default style) and several additional features.
Please report problems, issues, questions, or suggestions relating to the upgrade in this thread.
Edit: You may notice a few features missing, such as the blog. Don't worry, they'll all be back in good time. Once the upgrade is complete from an administrator perspective, I'll make a new announcement highlighting the features.
Good work Daniel.
It seems to have gone well. I'm sure many of the sites users' will find the new features of vB4 quite good!
Eventually we'll have a style similar to the previous one.
People fear change, but they soon get used to things once they've calmed down, so I wouldn't bend too far backwards on this one (new look is good!)

Nice work, Dan! The contrast of colors here is brilliant. Yeah, I can see some extra effects on the user icons. Keep up the good work, Chief.

Originally I tried to mirror the previous style completely, and it was more trouble than it was worth. I'm going to try to come up with something similar but different. ;)
Thanks. I'll still come up with a custom style

Unfortunately it's the default style that comes with the software. I hope to have a customized style ready completely ready by the end of the day.
It shouldn't be too hard Daniel.
I agree that keeping the default software theme is a BIG no. You should be able to mirror the old theme quite effectively. The only real differences lie in the new software features as well as the new editor and also the re-designed menu.

Well, so far, I love the upgrade! Aesthetically, it's much more sophisticated and sleek, which is just the kind of look that suits this site in my opinion. Very nice layout. Good work, Daniel! Thanks! =]

Do you want a job as chief advertiser of the Kindle in the UK? :p
It's not exactly a massive change of layout. It's just aesthetically different. Which right now is a bit jarring (as is the fact it keeps logging me out rather than just leaving me logged on - thank God my computer has my password saved, because I'll be damned if I can remember it after signing up 3 years ago). If the plan is to bring it closer to how it was, then I won't have a problem, but I wouldn't have a problem with more aesthetic changes being made, just to freshen the place up.

It took me a bit by surprise (I really should pay more attention to stuff like this) but I think I like. One tweak (and I don't think it's my pc 'cause I haven't changed anything) - the two right-hand columns on the main forum have all the second lines cut off (can only see the top half of the letters) and some of the first lines are like that.
But otherwise, yeah. Neat so far. Look forward to seeing what else is coming :)

I know it's not complete yet, but unfortunately I don't quite like this new layout. The latest posts subsection on the right was always an essential part of the interface for me, now it only displays the five latest additions, and its mixed with reviews and anouncements and the non-writing related stuff, most of which I never really paid much attention to. To have the ten most recently active threads on writing was very useful. I miss it.

Hey everyone, thanks for the comments. A few notes:
- The current style's the default, so it probably won't stay too long. If it does it'll be a secondary option. The sidebar will also have a makeover later this afternoon.
- We will eventually get a mobile-style solution, it's just not high on the priority list. I will look further into it, though.
- The blogs are down - I'm working on it. The blog system is the only real problem I had in the transition. I have class this afternoon so it might be a few hours, but it should be up later this afternoon.
- I'd like to stress that this is a partial upgrade, in a way. A lot of the software improvements will need to be set up, and the style still needs to be finished. ;)
I like it so far. Thanks Daniel.

Thanks guys, this is exactly the sort of thing I'm looking for. The error messages should be gone for good - that was me sorting out the blog system.
I'm attributing the server timeout message to fixing the blog. If server timeout issues keep happening please let me know. Ideally the upgraded software would run more efficiently, but it's also provided a lot of server-intensive features. Hopefully we won't have to upgrade our server just yet.

Well don't worry. I believe Dan was working on trying to make it more like the 2.0 layout we had before. The thing is, don't complain about this new software we are using. I went on the website, and to use a program like this costs upwards $250.00. That's plenty generous if you're asking me. Plus, it's very zippy once all of the bugs are fixed.

I don't mind software updates. Just design updates. The autosave features make me very happy, i like it alot. Just not this new thin look. After i posted that i realized that he already annouced he would go back to the old design with minor changes. I respect Daniel's software updates and his generous offerings. I don't mean to come off as rude, even though my posts can sometimes lean that way. I just need better words. For a writer that's odd, since Writers are supposed to be the masters of thier own words. I don't try to complain, i try to be as generous about my opinion as much as i can. I still need to work on accepting change, i hate change. Not software, but design changes. I think ever since Youtube changed thier channels after i sent them 23 million messages to please gives us an option between the two and they didn't listen to me or the many others who sent a complaint to not change it. But they ignored thier community and changed it anyway. I have a grudge against youtube just for that. And then they started changing everything else, making it worse and worse. So i guess my anger of Youtube being selfish jerks about thier channels and ignoring the users is still inside when i see changes like this on another website. So im sorry if i say something terribly rude, i just enjoyed the old format of this website so much that i didn't want a massive change. So if your reading this Daniel- i apologize if i came off as rude, im just like any other human with flaws and change is one of them for me. I know you are a great listener to your community and i respect that- but i just don't want to see this website to end up as thin as youtube. That i know won't happen, i just want what's best for the community with the least amount of design change as possible. If you could add a feature where we could choose this default design or the old one i would gladly appreciate that. It would mean that everybody would be happy and something we all agree on. Cause i have to admit my eyes were killing me from such a small text font that i have no idea how i wrote my recent posts today. (Not a cut-down towards your text skills, but they are just too small for me.) But if it was bigger on default, it would be better for the ones who have problems concentration on small text. But i will respect anything else you do as long as my design option is included and the same old fashioned format is the same for the nifty blogs and other minor stuff, - i will respect any software/ other minor updates changes you make. It's Your website anyway. Do whatever floats your boat. :)

I like the old design better as well and an option to use that one would be nice if they can set that up.
To me now the screen looks cluttered and jumbled. I can't find my recent posts. Whole thing looks garish and very annoying to my eyes. Everything seems to be yelling for attention at the same time and when everything yells for attention nothing stands out.
The perimeter edges are cramped and contribute to the jumbled impression by forcing more info into less space. Everything is placed into rectangular compartments. It's rectangles all over the place. The letters on 100% magnification are microscopic. Even on 150 magnification they are rather small.
Why not leave the appearance as it was since there was nothing wrong with it?

I would like to point out a recent issue I have experienced that may be because of the new upgrade...
When logging in, it took multiple tries before I finally logged in successfully. When I tried logging in the first few times, it logged me out and treated it like I had not tried logging in at all. It said the normal message it usually gives after logging in, giving me the redirecting message, but once the page loaded back up, I was not logged in. I had to do this several more times, then I finally got in.

I think some people perceive the new software to be less user-friendly simply because they are more accustomed to the old design. Give it a bit of time, I'm sure you will find the new software can do everything the old one can do plus more. ;)

one problem i've been having here lately, is my post reply text 'moving' when i'm trying to edit it... makes it hard to go to a place in it and fix/add something, 'cause it 'slips' away from where i want to place my cursor...
it's not happening anywhere else, so i can't see it being a prob with my computer... anyone else having this problem?

I have seen it, but I believe it is because the longer pages (twenty posts per page instead of ten) take longer to completely load and render.

Yeah I have been having this problem too. Mainly when I want to send a Pm, apart from that I'm getting used to the design now:)

It may be easy on your eyes, but it isn't easy on me. The lighter colors really hurt my eyes. And trust me I have my computer screen brightness at a moderate length of lighting. I haven't been on WF, just because of the fact that I'm not able to see very well.
Agreed, it's the reason for my lack of being on here as well. Lighter colors are hard on my eyes.

I didn't want to say anything to sound like a whiner or a complainer. But I'm glad we're going back to normal colours. Because this weirds my eyes out. I see funny colored dots on the screen. And my eyes do weird things with the muted colors. I need something bolder to be able to fill in my eyes.

Wow. There really are a lot of people who don't like the new theme, aren't there? I mean, I'm all for going back to the older theme, because this one is just lacking, but I'm not having any eye problems. Maybe it's my monitor? Meh, it's not my place to judge.

Yeah, J.P.Clyde, if you're having such serious eye problems, I'd suggest seeing an optician, because I don't think that a colour scheme should be having such a drastic effect on your eyesight.

Thank you. Because there aren't people with eye disorders or other forms of disorders such as dyslexia or anything of the sort. Just like people don't get colds and flus.
Also people aren't sensitive to certain colors and lights.

I have. I do.I wear glasses, but am also very photosensitive. Certain lighter colors trigger my eyes, the way they are triggering them. I find these comments slightly insulting in the sense that people don't seem to think that I don't go see an eye doctor. I already know of my problems. I'm making a statement of how the lighter color is affecting my eyes, I was not here to complain nor start a fight.
However, comments with unhelpful advice as if I am some lumbering brick who has no thought process to see doctors is ridiculous.

I really don't think 'go see an eye-doctor' is unhelpful advice, but that's your opinion. I also did not mean to insult you in any way, but you are requesting that Dan change the entire theme of the website to conform to your standards, and yours alone.

Several other people have stated how the theme has affected their eyes as well. It isn't just me. All I said was I was glad we were going back to the normal theme or a semi version of the normal theme because my eyes cannot handle this theme. I was putting my two cents in the way others have so that way Daniel can make some considerations.
Or should we stop considerations then? Stop parking for the handicap. Stop making handicap seats for them on the bus. Stop making wheelchairs all together, either they walk or they don't, but they need to conform to the society.

I like all the new features of the upgrade, but would also prefer a darker color scheme (best solution = option to choose).
But I think it's been established that we're going back to that, right? :)

I don't know if it's just me having this issue or not, but everytime I logged in earlier, it said thank you for logging in, then logged me straight back out - took me a few attempts before it would keep me logged in.
Also, I wasn't allowed to add any tags to my blog post, as they have to be less that three characters long?

Then I shall wait before I comment on the theme.
Over all, I like the changes (auto saved comment... at last!), but I notice the site is now a bit heavier, and takes longer to load. In the comment box, the letters appear on the screen a bit slower than the typing, which is irritating. Thought it was my computer, but I checked out other websites with such comment boxes, and I had no problem there.

Hi,
I've noticed a couple of twitches since the upgrade which I didn't have before. Specifically a couple of times I've double posted without trying to. It runs like this. I write my post, hit the box that says post quick reply, and then I get a warning message saying, do you want to leave this page. If I say no I stay where I am as I discovered the first time. This morning however I went straight to the yes option and returned to the thread, where my post had already been posted twice.
Not sure what this is about, but are other people experiencing it? Or is it just my crappy computer (skills?) at work? Latest double post was in the general writing thread, where Shy Little Frog was requesting help. I swear I did not double click anything.
Cheers.

Is there still a way of seeing all your back posts? I only find the latest posts. The "Find latest posts" link will let you see a very long history of posts - at least a couple thousand. I doubt you can go back to your very first post if you have tens of thousands of them (you couldn't with the previous version), but you can see a lot of them.
Don't even have so many.. Thanks Cogito, will take a look.

many thanks for all your hard work, daniel!
your dedication to this site is a great gift to all who've benefitted from it being 'the best on the web' ever since you set it up way back when we bailed out of the old 'gone to the dogs' wf.com...
it's been a pleasure for me to come here every day and be able to do what little i can to help new writers, in the 'cozy' atmosphere of friendly courtesy and caring for each other that you and your trusty 'trustees' have worked so hard to maintain... i'm both amazed and happy that you're so young, so you can go on doing this long after i've gone on to that writer's version of 'the great beyond'...
lotsa love and endless hugs, maia

I'm still having a problem seeing which community the various discussions are in. When I click on the 'unread posts', everything shows up except for the last column. It says "Community:" and then the line below is cut off. I have to put the mouse on it to see which one it's in. Not a big deal, except I do find myself clicking on discussions with interesting titles, only to find it's in a community I don't have an interest in (like RPGs), so it's a bit frustrating.
Also, when I click on the button to go to the first unread post, many (most) times it takes me to the last post, rather than the last one read. I clean out my cache, etc, every night, so not sure what else I can do on my end which might fix this. Both of these were not problems before the upgrade.

The only complaint I have about the layout right now is a teeny tiny one that's not important at all, but it bothers me a bit. It would be nice if the sticky threads and regular threads were separated more clearly. Right now they kind of blend together, and at certain angles I can't even see the color difference (I move around a lot while sitting in front of the computer... right now I have my left knee on the floor and the other on the bed).
Edit: Guess that was already in progress... thank you, now it's perfect :)
I have just switched over to the new theme and I quite like it.
I feel it's better than the previous design on the old software.

i'm still experiencing a 'slide-off' sometimes, when i'm writing more than a short post... the text slides down and away from me, so i can't see where the cursor is and i have to fiddle around a lot to finish typing...
i know that's not a very accurate description of what takes place, but is the best i can do... is anything like this happening to anyone else?...
and has anyone any idea why it happens?

As the page continues to load, it has to adjust positioning of page elements up and down until everything is loaded.
It can be tweaked away by entering the sizes of elements into certain of the HTML elements, so the space reserved matches the size of what is getting loaded. But it is very time-intensive unless you are using an HTML editor that inserts those sizes automatically. It's probably due to the theme customization Daniel did.
By the way, the font on the current version on the theme is pretty small, and hard to look at for lengthy periods.

That may be a function of when you are on, Dave. I have little trouble during low traffic times. But during times when a lot of people are on I have all the same issues in linux. It is definitely a server side problem, not people's computers.

Every time I log in, the page says "Invalid Redirect URL." Does anyone else have this issue? And, even though I check the little box to have it remember my username, it never does. Even if I just go to another page for a moment--not closing out of my browser--I have to log back in on here. Is there any way to correct this?

Make sure you are connecting to www.writingforums.org. There are a couple variations on that name, but all will redirect you to exactly that URL. The variations will get you here, but your saved links may be funky, and your cookies won;t work quite right.

I just had some trouble logging in, at first I got the "Invalid Redirect URL", then it would accept my password, welcome me but then bring me back to the start page 'un-logged'. The only way I could log in was to select 'Remember me" before submitting my user name and password. Seems like a cookie issue...

Alright I cleared the cookies for this site, and then for a while it said "No data found" when I tried to log in, or "Too many redirect URLs." Then when I tried to post something, it would say "Fatal error" or the page would lose its format and just be a jumble of text. I tried the site on Mozilla Firefox (I usually use Google Chrome, but it's buggy in its own ways), but it gave me the same routine. Today is the first day it's worked without too much hassle, and hopefully it will stay that way! lol
