You will find the Rules to the site here: Writing Forums - Forum Rules (http://www.writingforums.org/showthread.php?p=101625#post101625)
Frequently Asked Questions are answered here: Writing Forums - FAQs (http://www.writingforums.org/faq.php)

Additionally, look for important links on the right side of the main page of the forum. They are highlighted in a light blue.

Forum Leaders:
If should need their services: the names' of all Super Moderators appear as a cyan color; our Site Administrator, Daniel, is somewhat of a brick red; and those deemed Reviewers are of a lime green complexion. You'll find the names of those members here: Writing Forums - Show Groups (http://writingforums.org/showgroups.php)

Equal-Opportunity Reviewing:
When you post a thread, you have to reformat your paragraphs. Also, before posting in 'The Review Room (http://www.writingforums.org/forumdisplay.php?f=18)' section, you need at least 2 credits. This equates to reviewing two works (more people get reviews, less people just coming and going). If you'd like to know why we enforce this rule in-depth, visit the following: Purpose of Reviewing (http://www.writingforums.org/showthread.php?t=4705)

More information on becoming a helpful reviewer: Posting Etiquette (http://writingforums.org/showthread.php?t=11703), Basic Critic Guide (http://writingforums.org/showthread.php?t=3453)

Altering Your WritingForums Profile:
Also, to gain access to altering your profile, go to the very top of any page, and under our little logo of someone writing is a link entitled "UserCP (http://www.writingforums.org/usercp.php)". This will allow you to change your signature (which is featured on every one of your posts), your avatar, as well as many other things like your instant messaging contacts and biography.

Another great way to alter your profile is to donate and gain Supporter status, click here for more information (http://www.writingforums.org/showthread.php?t=5508).

Around the Forum:
On a weekly basis, a few of our moderators hold contests in the realms of stories (http://www.writingforums.org/forumdisplay.php?f=75) and poetry (http://www.writingforums.org/forumdisplay.php?f=76). These contests are purely for sport and the love of writing. However, if you happen to be a big game hunter, you're in luck. The site administrator, Daniel, announces a short story contest four times a year that has a prize generally ranging from $25-$50. The reward is given through PayPal (or gift cards). Make sure to keep your eyes open for the next competition.

To help keep things lively, many of our members have created Role-Playing Games (RPGs) (http://www.writingforums.org/forumdisplay.php?f=63), in which anyone can participate. Don't worry if you have little or no experience, our friendly community will guide you along and you'll soon become addicted to the intricate stories you help weave.

Additional Information:
Because most people don't find out about these until later... to the bottom left of every one of your posts is a green light, a balance, and a sign that resembles 'yield'. The first icon just means you're logged on the site. The second is used to give people reputation points (the more posts, the more effective it is -- junior members can't affect anyone). The third reports a post to the admins/moderators. Use the final to prevent problems in the forum.

Continuing with information that may be harder to discover, these are all of the alterations you can perform on your text: code list (http://www.writingforums.org/misc.php?do=bbcode). These changes include making bold or italic words, color, highlighting, and the infamous... spoiler tag.

Helpful Writing Links: In the 'General Writing' section, we have provided resources (http://writingforums.org/In%20the%20%27General%20Writing%27%20section,%20th ere%20are%20some%20helpful%20links%20and%20threads .) to help you with the craft we all treasure.

brainy idea, adam!... wonder why no one's thought of it till now... not personal, but many others offer a personal 'hello' and this is sorely needed, imo...

love and approving hugs, maia

Hey! Very informative for new members. I like it.

I suppose you could personally post them in new thread or perhaps we could make one that's a sticky?

Charisma
08-05-2007, 11:30 PM
I think you should make it sticky. It's a bit mundane, so if it's posted invidiually on each trhread it won't grab a lot of welcoming spirit. No offense, guidelines are mundane :)

I suppose, but some find greatness and others need it thrust upon them in a haphazardly manner. I could see it as a sticky, then just post the smaller link in each of the welcoming threads.

Whichever you prefer, since you came up with the idea. :p

I suppose you could make a new thread (or I could move this one) and make it a sticky and just post a link to it. It'd have to be updated periodically, most likely.

Yeah... things like rule changes, the end/beginning of new contests, and things others come up with could be featured in the packs. Though I'd also like if others were to post them as well. That way everyone gets one in a short amount of time and isn't left wondering like I've seem some do.

We can just use this thread, and when we need another pack, just update it and lead them to the new post.

A good idea well done. How about adding about the Reviewers and Mods into it, their colour and purpose for example?

adamant
08-06-2007, 01:25 AM
Oh yeah, I forgot about that. (Maybe even add why certain members are blue :p) I was supposed to have posted links to the code list (http://www.writingforums.org/misc.php?do=bbcode) as well. Never even knew about that until the Harry Potter conversations started up.

Kit

If it helps.. i'm a mod and I didn't know about the code list until then either...

I love this idea, perhaps as a stickied thread and then when you're welcoming someone just put the link in for them to read if they want to.

Too true about the blue thing and having not read the Potter thing I knew not about the code list either - but all useful fo sho. Can you hyperlink to the View Forum Leaders, that might help?

I don't know if there is a link that provides all that info, is there? Mods? Reviewers?

I don't know if there is a link that provides all that info, is there? Mods? Reviewers?

Can you clarify for me. (Bare with me I sort of still getting back into the swing after recent events. ;))

LMAO beleive it or not I only spend a couple of hours here a day unless im alone in the house then I spend some time here. Just as well really considering the amount of rubbish flames and spam we've recently had.

Who told you about the rent ;)

Hi Hulls - Adamant is looking for a link to Mod and Reviewer responsibilities rather than the Leader list. Somewhere that lists what it is each does so that he can add it to his project.

Raven

Best thing is to PM Lpspider.

To become a reviewer you must give at least three detailed reviews of anothers stories and then pm the links to Lpspider. However Im not sure if he's accepting reviewers at the moment. You'll have to pm him and ask.

adamant
08-07-2007, 07:58 AM
Uh...? We were just asking if there was any thread that actually explained what the Mods, Super Mods, Admin, and Reviewers do to fulfill their roles on the site. The leader list just tells who is which of the groups.

How about putting all that info in the welcome email that you get when you register? Just a thought.

xxkozxx
08-07-2007, 10:37 AM
It's been a while but I believe when you register it sends you a welcome email and asks you to activate your account.

I don't know LPSpider still has that turned on or whatnot.

Most forums are set up that way but I don't know if this software will allow you to customize any of that or not.

Don't see why it wouldn't ... and what exactly do you do as an IT guy? I was thinking about some career in computers.

xxkozxx
08-07-2007, 10:43 AM
The question is, what don't I do, lol. I am network administrator. But I do it all, except for extensive programming (because I hate looking at code).

Mostly, I fix computer hardware and software, manage some servers, manage switches and routers, do some IP addressing and networking, run mail, dns, dhcp, www, and domain services and a host of other things that I could sit here and describe but it would probably turn into a long boring book, lol.

Oh and I do site migrations and site builds for network and data infrastructures.

What's your education background? Is the pay any good?

xxkozxx
08-07-2007, 10:48 AM
I finished up an Associates a year ago or so. I got a late start thought.

The pay is decent. It keeps food on the table. It's not so much the pay as it is the opportunity. You can basically get a job ANYWHERE because everyone needs a good it guy. :)

adamant
08-07-2007, 10:52 AM
Well ... I was also thinking of something with business/economics, and since money is everywhere too, there are a lot of opportunities in that field as well ... then again, I could be hybrid.

xxkozxx
08-07-2007, 10:59 AM
Yeah, you can make good money as an accountant or something like that but I am not a mathmatician so I generally tend to stick with something I understand better, lol.

I'm kind of an ADD type personality so I have to have something that is pretty fast paced and will keep me challenged or I get bored and lose interest.

The opportunities in the IT industries are endless. Breaking into it is the hardest part.

adamant
08-07-2007, 11:02 AM
Eh... that sounds like fun. How did you get jobs and all of that? Did work for local people to get some reputation?

I don't really like a whole lot of math, it's just some of the things don't seem that bad... and the pay doesn't either. I just want something that won't bore me and will get me mucho dinero!

One of my professors recommended me to a friend of his that was looking for someone. I kind of lucked into it.

I'm actually looking into an IT Director position right now. I have a second interview coming up. All things are looking good. That will bring me considerably more greenbacks.

I have a buddy that is making six figures right now to do the same job I am doing, only for a fortune 500 corporation.

What jobs in the computer field would you say pay the most? Also, what should I expect for an entry-level position?

xxkozxx
08-07-2007, 11:50 AM
Net Admins pay pretty decent, Server Admins or DBA's, or Programmer.

Entry level depends on your locale and the company you start out with.

In my area, 10.00 -15.00 an hour is about the norm for entry level.
