View Full Version : Premium Membership - a way to support the site
Daniel 09-07-2007, 11:43 PM Premium Membership - Become a Supporter
Premium membership is a way for you to help support WritingForums.Org.
While you do receive some things (detailed below) by purchasing premium membership you're really donating to the site. The purpose of this is to help fund the site for more future improvements, such as the new blog and style that will be coming in the next few days. By donating you help the site grow. All funds will be used to improve the site, be that by creating new features, upgrading the hosting and servers, advertising, or otherwise.
Premium memberships is completely optional. No features that are currently available, including the new ones, will be exclusive to premium members. This site will always be free.
Premium members will get the following:
No Ads
Private Forum (discuss anything you want - including private reviews)
1500 2000 message PM box
Colored Username
New User Rank "Badge" - http://www.writingforums.org/images/supporter.gif
New Custom User Title
+ more will be added
All premium members will be held to the same rules as all members.
To subscribe for premium membership, go to your Usercp. On the bottom left, find the link that says "subscriptions." From there you can purchase the membership option. All donations will be sent through paypal.
In the subscription manager, you will see several options. You can purchase membership for 1 month, 3 months, 6 months, or a year. Each option is cheaper for the longer you purchase it for. There will also be two options at the same price. The ones with the asterisk (*) are reoccurring payments. This means that they will automatically try to recharge you when the current subscription expires. So if you want to make a one-time donation, choose the option with no asterisk. If you want to make it for each selected period (i.e., send $5 every month), then choose the asterisk payment, which is the reoccurring option.
If you wish to donate more than the highest amount or wish to donate anonymously, you can send funds through paypal to support[at]writingforums[dot]com.
Feel free to ask any questions in this thread.
Just to clarify:
Payment is through paypal only. Paypal is an ebay owned company and has a generally good reputation. The way it works is that you can send funds electronically through a bank account, credit/debit card, or your current paypal balance. Once you select to become a supporter it'll walk you through the steps and ask you to confirm payment.
If your using USD then your subscription should come into affect immediately. If you're using a different currency such as GBPs then I'll have to manually approve the payment (less than 24 hours). If you pay through you bank account it also takes several days to process the payment.
ILTBY 09-08-2007, 12:32 AM I think it's an excellent idea, I've just bought a 3 month subscription to trial it. I'm happy to support the site, I think it's such a great opportunity for writers of all types.
Do you know when the subscription will kick in?
Daniel 09-08-2007, 12:49 AM I think it's an excellent idea, I've just bought a 3 month subscription to trial it. I'm happy to support the site, I think it's such a great opportunity for writers of all types.
Do you know when the subscription will kick in?
I'm sorry about that. It should have been instant - I'm not sure what the problem is.
It's late where I'm at so I'm retiring for the night, but I'll fix this first thing tomorrow. Until then I've manually added you as a subscriber. Anyone else who chooses to subscribe before I fix this issue may also have to be manually added.
Anyway, thanks for subscribing and congrats on being the first subscriber. :p
ILTBY 09-08-2007, 12:51 AM It's no problem, there's no rush :)
Thanks :D
ILTBY 09-08-2007, 01:10 AM Thanks so much :)
(it's not letting me respond to your PM  )
Daniel 09-08-2007, 01:22 AM Thanks so much :)
(it's not letting me respond to your PM  )
Really? That's.... unusually. I just checked the settings and it should be working. I'll check back tomorrow.
ILTBY 09-08-2007, 01:26 AM "No private messages selected."
I'm getting that message when I try to respond to you  :(
Domoviye 09-08-2007, 02:22 AM When I get cash I'll sign up. Until then I'm poor.
Banzai 09-08-2007, 03:54 AM Same. It would be nice to contribute to the site, but at the moment I just don't have the cash.
Torana 09-08-2007, 07:21 AM I will be sure to show my support with a 12 month membership within the next two weeks.
I just have to get a pay pal account first is all. :p
Great idea though Daniel.
Torana
ILTBY 09-08-2007, 09:56 PM Daniel,
Sorry to cause trouble; I'm still having trouble sending PMs, getting the same message every time I try to.
Cogito 09-08-2007, 10:13 PM I only see that if I click the Delete Message button (when reading a PM) without checking the checkbox,
Exactly what steps are you taking to send a PM, and what browser and version are you using?
ILTBY 09-08-2007, 10:14 PM I was looking around for a checkbox that I might have been missing, but couldn't find anything. It's letting me send new PMs, but not respond to them.
Daniel 09-08-2007, 10:25 PM In all honesty, I'm baffled as to what could possibly be causing this. I've sent a support request to the makers of the software. Perhaps they can give me some insight into the issue.
ILTBY 09-08-2007, 10:27 PM Thanks for your help, I appreciate your efforts :)
Cogito 09-08-2007, 10:32 PM So you read a PM, and then what? You click on the gold button labelled Reply? Exactly when do you get the error?
And what Browser are you using? IE6? IE7? Firefox?
ILTBY 09-08-2007, 10:52 PM Daniel has fixed the problem now :)
Thanks for your help.
Daniel 09-08-2007, 10:53 PM You're welcome.
Also, for the premium membership, I'm 90% sure I solved the auto subscription issue. It should work now - if it doesn't, let me know.
Daniel 09-09-2007, 07:41 PM Also, feel free to suggest additional features for supporting members. I won't guarantee anything, but I will consider all suggestions.
Heather Louise 09-10-2007, 02:23 PM ermm, i would really love to, i am all for supporting forums, sick children, dolphins etc but my mam laughed at me when i suggested paying for something that allready comes free. silly woman. as soon as i get a job, like after 16 or summat, i will join up, i pinky swear. :p oww, and can i ask, what's the private forum thing for subscribed members?
Torana 11-28-2007, 11:11 PM The private forum for supporters is where those who have joined up as a supporter can have private discussions about whatever we would like to talk about so long as it doesn't go against forum rules of course.
You can even ask for private reviews of your work as well.
Being a supporter of the forum I have found is really good. You get a larger inbox and the private forum really is an added bonus. Plus it is a great way to help make sure that the forum stays operational at the same time. :)
We just need some more members to become a supporter. It isn't actually that expensive. I found it rather cheap to join as a supporter for 12 months. I've been to other forums which are far more expensive to join as a paid member that is for sure.
SeaBreeze 11-29-2007, 08:20 PM How much is it in Australian Dollars?
Daniel 11-29-2007, 08:42 PM How much is it in Australian Dollars?
In Australian dollars the subscription prices are currently as following:
1 Month - $AU 6.12
3 Months - $AU 12.23
6 months - $AU 24.46
1 year - $AU 36.69They were approximately equivalent to the coinciding U.S. dollar amount.
SeaBreeze 11-29-2007, 08:49 PM Ok. We will have to see what happens in the new year :) Thanks.
Daniel 11-30-2007, 10:47 PM Supporters will also get a supporter "badge" under their avatar and can now enter custom user titles. User titles are the titles that appear directly below the username.
SeaBreeze 11-30-2007, 10:59 PM OOohhh sounds spiffy! :( I will have to wait until the new year unfortunatly!
ILTBY 11-30-2007, 11:08 PM How exciting :D Off to check it out now.
Yay! Look at my groovy badge! :p
Bluemouth 12-01-2007, 06:47 AM Those supporter tabs are excellent! They almost tempt me to buy a membership but I've already blown a lot of money on other things lately. :(
Cogito 12-01-2007, 08:34 AM The badge is a really nice touch!
Banzai 12-01-2007, 01:57 PM I'll probably be able to become a supporter in the new year :) It's only fair, since I'm hooked to this site.
Cogito 12-01-2007, 03:09 PM You Banzai? Hooked on the site? I'm stunned. :)
Banzai 12-01-2007, 03:25 PM I know, I do my best to hide my addiction :p
Raven 12-04-2007, 05:38 PM Well I'm in I spend enough time here so Here I am
lordofhats 12-04-2007, 05:47 PM I need to talk to my dad. I'm thinking about trading in my Xbox live membership (Which I can't use cause my college blocks my 360 from the network) for support. Just to get rid of these darn ads. Besides I'll save like $20.
Raven 12-04-2007, 06:09 PM Its a good cause
Cogito 12-04-2007, 06:11 PM Agreed :)
lordofhats 12-04-2007, 06:13 PM Indeed it is. Everyone is a winner. I get $20 back. Lpspider gets some support cash and my Xbox Live stops going to waste (I'll miss Chromehounds though...)
Raven 12-04-2007, 06:21 PM lol. Well we do have the cookie Jar and now we have the Hidden Cookie Jar. Sccchhhh though..............:p
ILTBY 12-04-2007, 06:23 PM Cogito, I'm looking forward to seeing you there :)
Hulls, I'm about to go and welcome you :p
Raven 12-05-2007, 05:29 AM I'll probably be able to become a supporter in the new year :) It's only fair, since I'm hooked to this site.
Banzai You should be charged back rent for the time you spend here. lol :p
Heather Louise 12-05-2007, 01:26 PM My mam laughed at me when I asked. It just aint happening. Once I start earning I'll be supporting right away, but until then I'm sorry. *bows head*
Raven 12-05-2007, 01:44 PM Don't worry Heather. We'll still be here when you get a Job:p
Heather Louise 12-05-2007, 01:52 PM Hehe. Not that long away actually. It was scaring me the other day that I will have finished school in just over a year. I wanna go back to Nursery :p
Banzai 12-05-2007, 02:11 PM Are you planning to leave after GCSE, heather?
Raven 12-05-2007, 07:12 PM Hey Banzai is that supporter badge of yours invisible :p
Rickie writes 03-28-2008, 10:19 AM So where do I find out how much this costs?
Cogito 03-28-2008, 10:39 AM In your User Control Panel (UserCP), go to the Miscellaneous section on the left and click the Paid Subscriptions link. The Available Subscriptions pand that comes up containds a drop-down control listing the various subscription choices (currency, duration, and whether it automatically renews). You are not committed to subscribing for several more steps, so don't worry!
Bluemouth 03-28-2008, 06:49 PM We'd love to see you sign up, though. :)
MarcG 03-30-2008, 06:45 PM I'll be signing up once I resolve an issue with my bank (or I recieve my statement). Can't see my statements online because they potentially entered the wrong SS number and I can't activate PayPal without it. Not a good thing to mess up.
Cogito 03-30-2008, 09:01 PM Well, I hope you get it sorted soon. In any event, I look forward to seeing the green neon (Kryptonite?) bar under your avatar. :)
Torana 03-31-2008, 01:12 AM I hate it when that happens. But look forward to you joining us in the silence of the supporters lounge :p
(at the moment the crickets are all you can hear)
Cogito 03-31-2008, 06:00 AM Yeah, but one of the crickets has been nicknamed Gus, and he's the size of a Volkswagon!
Torana 03-31-2008, 06:11 AM LOL :p
Strangely enough I'm actually petrified of crickets....><
Raven 03-31-2008, 08:50 AM Is that a cricket under your rock there Torry. :p
Torana 04-01-2008, 09:05 PM <stomps Raven's foot and smacks him over the head with a lump of wood>
What was that? :p
MarcG 04-04-2008, 01:58 PM Finally got that whole mess sorted out. Money is on its way! (should be cleared by the 9th, according to PayPal) :)
Torana 04-04-2008, 08:38 PM That is great news MarcG. Look forward to seeing you around the dusty corridors of the supporters lounge. :)
Milady 04-06-2008, 02:37 PM Heh, I'd like to support, but I'm a long shot from having a job. It'll be another year before I can drive and get a job. But I'll see ya then! :p
Daniel 04-07-2008, 07:08 PM Finally got that whole mess sorted out. Money is on its way! (should be cleared by the 9th, according to PayPal) :)
I see the pending message in Paypal. It should be confirmed any day now. Once it is your should automatically become a supporter if you're in the U.S. - outside the U.S. I'll have to confirm it manually. Thanks for supporting! ;)
Raven 04-08-2008, 10:34 AM <stomps Raven's foot and smacks him over the head with a lump of wood>
What was that? :p
You just knocked the Rock off the olive branch. :p
MarcG 04-09-2008, 06:29 PM Hurray!
Cogito 04-09-2008, 06:43 PM Awesome! Welcome to the Supprorters' Guild!
Oasis Writer 04-09-2008, 11:53 PM So, if you can't do the whole Paypal thing, but you have a debit card, is it a possibility, or no?
Torana 04-10-2008, 03:27 AM I don't think that you can actually...but then again I am not certain.
Cogito 04-10-2008, 05:35 AM Yes, you should be able to. You don't have to yourself have PayPal to pay through the PayPal system, but it is a bit faster if you already DO have a PayPal account.
Oasis Writer 04-10-2008, 09:04 AM Well, let's see what I can do. I don't have a paypal because I'm not 18, and my mom said that was one of the rules or something. (Momma always said....)
But if I can with just my Debit Card, then I would love to donate :D Is there a certain amount I need to have in mind? *shifty*
Banzai 04-10-2008, 05:54 PM You don't have to be 18 to have paypal...
And the subscription fees can be found (I think) by going onto UserCP, and then paid subscriptions in the Miscellaneous section of the menu down the left of the page.
Oasis Writer 04-10-2008, 07:08 PM Hmm....okay :) thank you
Bluemouth 04-10-2008, 07:47 PM People lie about their age all the time on Paypal. ;)
Writing guy 04-10-2008, 11:13 PM My old writing forum from years ago got so big, that the admins were considering having somekind of membership fee. It was a democracy and the final vote was no. The site no longer exists, but whther or not because of this, I'm not sure.
Oasis Writer 04-11-2008, 12:01 AM I know, but I don't know if I can lie about my Debit Card :D lol
Leader_of_the_Pack 05-17-2008, 12:26 PM I think this is a great idea and a wonderful way to support the site. As soon as I get a paypal account set up I plan to subscribe.
I have a question. If you have a private forum and your subscription expires, does that mean your forum disappears too?
Cogito 05-17-2008, 07:02 PM It's not private to you, it's private to the Supporter group.
