"Once Upon a Time in America" is the greatest film every made, no doubt about it. It looks gorgeous, hints at an ambiguous meaning within the non-linear structure and has excellent performances all round from the cast. It has in Robert De Niro's "Noodles" one of the least empathetic protagonists I've ever come across. I'm sick and tired of watching and reading characters feeling sorry for themselves. I hate over-sentimentality. With "Noodles", there is next to nothing to grant him empathy, especially the final scene, which hints that he might have transferred his guilt over to his best buddy, Max (James Woods). I don't know if anyone from Britain will remember the Channel 4 100 Greatest Films list a few years back, but "Once Upon" wasn't on the list. Why why why! Sergio Leone was a cinematic genius, this film is a masterpiece.
