does anyone else find it annoying to have google ad banners interrupting the posts?

A minor irritant, yes, but I feel they are necessary to maintain the site.

Yup, and I have to disagree with Banzai about them being necessary.

They certainly could be somewhere else. Side bars or the bottom of the threads instead of in the middle.

I wondered what the empty boxes were. Heh. Apparently they don't work with Opera or I blocked them at some point in time. They do get bothersome, but they can help alleviate hosting costs.

Your not the one paying the bills. :p
I know they're irritating, but they are needed. I see them just like you do.

The more people become supporters then you won't have to tolerate the adverts. But like Daniel has said it helps him keep the site active.

They didn't really bother me when I could see them
Become a supporter, it's a lot of fun :p

Not here I don't, but I pay the bills for another writing forum, and it doesn't carry any ads at all.

Not any more I don't. So long. ;)

Yikes, I think that's a bit of an overreaction. Every single site and forum I'm on use ads to pay for their sites, I'm not sure what the big deal is :) Not many people can afford to keep a forum running using money out of their own pocket.

these ads don't bother me. On some boards they come and flash at you.
I can't stay on those since it screws up my eyes and gives me migraines.
These are small potatoes not worth the hassle of commenting.
I am just glad I found this site. I get to talk to people and it is fun to chat with young people again. I like having people read my stories and help me write them better.
Ads are a part of life. You watch TV. listen to the radio or heck you drive around town or on the highway. There are ads.
Don't sweat the little things.

Yesterday I added additional ads: one below the first post and one near the last. So that's what the issue they're discussing is.

That's all fine and dandy, but as this site grows so do the costs of hosting and maintaining it. As I mentioned elsewhere, we'll be upgrading to a new server in the next few days - this will more than triple the monthly cost of running the site. With just the ad in the header we were breaking even; however, with the new server it'll cost more than the site makes. Not all of us (namely me) can afford that monthly out-of-pocket expense.

Agreed. Everyone wil get used to it in the end and wont really notice them as much. I'm looking into going to premium membership next year. I should be able to afford it, I just need to know exactly how to pay and where I can pay it. But I'm sure Torana will be able to help me out there.

I am thinking a good birthday present for Dom will be a membership. So in January maybe we will both be members.
now is that a threat or a promise?

I know the ads are annoying, I wasn't bothered by them and even though I no longer have to see them, I wouldn't care if I did. It is a small sacrifice to pay to be able to be a part of a community that is growing all the time and in the long run it will benefit us all.
We can't expand and become greater if Lp can't get the ads to help pay for it all you know. This site still has less than every other forum I am a member on except for 3 which have multiple admins and so forth paying bills and thousands and thousands of paying members as well.
If we can get more supporters than maybe we can get less advertising. Now that is something to think about isn't it!

As long as the ads don't start popping up in the actual written part of the posts I'm happy. RPGnet.com has it that certain words in EVERY post is highlighted and if you accidentally move your mouse over them they fill up the screen with an ad.
Now thats annoying.

That sounds horribly annoying  how would you highlight anything?

actually they're just blue and italicized not actually highlighted. And if you wanted to highlight something you had to carefully maneuver around the stupid things, hit the mouse button and you could highlight normally. But if you hit one of them before you clicked the mouse button you got to read an e-bay add, or some other stores add.
ANNOYING!!!!

A mozilla/firefox plugin helps block all ads. Its nice. I just see empty boxes, and it looks like thick borders :p lol

I still don't see the issue :) They just don't bother me, they're easy to ignore.

gosh and golly and gee whiz, i sure didn't mean to start a firestorm over it, folks... sorry if the question annoyed anyone even more than the ads did me... ;-)
i appreciate the info on why it's necessary to have more google ads, though i still don't quite get why they have to be in the middle of the posts... however, if that's the only place admin can put them to get a cost break, then so be it... the site is certainly worth keeping up and a small annoyance is little to pay for the benefits it provides to so many...
thanks for all you do, lp!... the time and effort you put into it are much appreciated...
love and extra hugs, maia
ps: far as i'm concerned, you can lock this one up... m

Adverts aren't that bad. Once they have been there for a while you forget seeing them :p

I barely noticed them. I think they are a fine addition if it is helping the site. LP I do plan on becoming a member, and donating to the site. It will just have to be after the new year when the holiday expenses are over, or maybe even longer because I am in the middle of trying to buy a house. When i get some spare change I will send it your way, because it is a worthy site to give too.
cheers
