ILTBY 12-04-2007, 07:09 PM I'm not sure if this has been done before?
I thought it might be cool if we all shared our (first) names in this thread to get to know each other a bit better :)
I'm Josie, there's no meaning behind it.
Crimson Threnody 12-04-2007, 07:25 PM Shara - but I prefer to go by Riley :)
ILTBY 12-04-2007, 07:26 PM Is there any reason for that? :)
I personally prefer Josephine or Jose, I'm not very fond of Josie.
Crimson Threnody 12-04-2007, 07:27 PM Mostly because my real name is constantly mispronounced and it is far beyond annoying.
adamant 12-04-2007, 07:36 PM ...and the Pussycats!
la la
la la la la la
ILTBY 12-04-2007, 07:40 PM Aah, yes, mine isn't pronounced wrong, but often spelt incorrectly.
Adamant: -.-
Frost 12-04-2007, 07:50 PM Mitch.
Named after my great uncle
MarcG 12-04-2007, 08:04 PM Sometimes I forget.
Raven 12-04-2007, 08:04 PM Simon.
But everyone calls me Raven in the real world and on the net.
lordofhats 12-04-2007, 08:08 PM Ben, yes the Uptown Rejects character is named after me.
So everyone can get to know me here is my full name, date of birth, credit card numbers, and social security!
Domoviye 12-04-2007, 08:13 PM Daniel. But I'm only called Daniel by employers who don't remember me saying "Please call me Dan."
And I'm also called Daniel by my Mom when I do something she doesn't approve of. When I hear her say my full name, then I run away.
adamant 12-04-2007, 08:21 PM Daniel...
evizaer 12-04-2007, 09:11 PM My name is Michael. Terribly boring and ubiquitous these days. Just call me ev, i guess.
Cogito 12-04-2007, 09:21 PM I'm Dave. But not David. That's the name the guv'mint uses for me.
wordwizard 12-04-2007, 09:33 PM Ashley-I was named after a guy my mom had a crush on (on a daytime soap opera) even though I am female. Thats the joke in the family-I don't think it is true though.
Crimson Threnody 12-04-2007, 09:36 PM Ashley is mostly a popular female name, I thought? I went to highschool with several Ashleys - all female.
Gunslinger 12-04-2007, 09:41 PM Edmund, but I go by Ed. I hate Eddie the way fire hates water.
lessa 12-04-2007, 11:16 PM Lynda with a y my father couldn't spell so I got a y instead of an i.
now every lynda is spelling it with a y.
Adamant there was a cartoon character called Atom Ant and that is what I see everytime I read your name.
Eoz Eanj 12-05-2007, 12:38 AM My name is so obvious that a chimp could figure it out.
i.e: It is a name within a name.
ILTBY 12-05-2007, 01:42 AM Zoe? :)
Eoz Eanj 12-05-2007, 01:45 AM Golden coins and silver buttons to I Love to Be Young
ILTBY 12-05-2007, 02:12 AM How exciting :)
Banzai 12-05-2007, 02:26 AM Reviewer? :p
My name is Matt. But you can call me "Your Supreme Eminence".
ILTBY 12-05-2007, 02:42 AM I'm writing a short story right with a character in it whose name is Matt  :p
Banzai 12-05-2007, 02:51 AM It's a good name. Though strangely enough I don't like the name Matthew
ILTBY 12-05-2007, 03:38 AM Ditto...but my cousin is called Matthew and I have a negative association with him :)
Matt is smoother, though.
Sayso 12-05-2007, 04:20 AM Hey Cog, can I say it? Can I? Can I? Please.......
Dave, What are you doing Dave? Dave, that's highly irregular. (2001)
I know that's probably not the exact phrase but I've been needing to do that for ages.
Me? Rachel, nice to meet you all. :)
luke_mushu_2010 12-05-2007, 07:53 AM My first name is Luke obviously. I was named after the book of the Bible titled "Luke". Most people just call me "King Luke-coolest dude in the world!" lol:p
SeaBreeze 12-05-2007, 08:03 AM Kandie.
But I aint sweet. I rebel.
Raven 12-05-2007, 08:35 AM So it was you pinching cookies. lol :p
Heather Louise 12-05-2007, 09:37 AM Heather, but I guess it doesn't take a genius to work that one out :p
adamant 12-05-2007, 09:53 AM Does anyone know what my name is? I'll give you a cookie.
Cogito 12-05-2007, 10:49 AM Same as our renowned site owner, and a certain Canadian, currently displaced many thousands of miles?
Banzai 12-05-2007, 12:30 PM Chocolate bear?
adamant 12-05-2007, 01:07 PM Oddly enough, no. I am not a Daniel, nor am I a Chocolate Bear (not on my birth certificate anyway).
The Great. The Magnificent. The Eclectic. The Intergalactic Ninja. Kevin.
Cogito 12-05-2007, 01:10 PM Daniel...
That is why I thought your name was Daniel, and that you were testing us to see if we had read the earlier posts :)
Banzai 12-05-2007, 01:29 PM Surprisingly enough, now that you mention it I knew that, adamant. Not sure where from though...
And Cog, you've changed colour again. Are the mods chameleons now?
Heather Louise 12-05-2007, 01:34 PM It is confusing isn't it, Banzai. Lets shoot 'em all :D
adamant 12-05-2007, 01:37 PM I said Daniel because Domoviye gets called that when he's in trouble. :)
And Bambi, I don't believe you could have possibly known that...
EDIT: On top of that, Raven seems to have gotten a new ranking. Senior Super Moderator. Eh.
Lemex 12-05-2007, 02:35 PM I have no name, I am the International man of Mystery.
And it's Michael. :p
ILTBY 12-05-2007, 06:21 PM Adamant, I thought you were a girl so I would have been way off :p
Michael seems to be the most popular :D
adamant 12-05-2007, 07:14 PM Wait... why did you think I was a girl? and what did you think my name was?
mammamaia 12-05-2007, 07:20 PM you all know my first name... which is my only name... maia
here's what it means and how i got it, in case anyone cares:
Original of this was in answer to a ‘mentee’ asking me if maïa is my ‘real’ name:
answer is, “Yes” and "No"… it is my ‘real’ name, but not the name I started life with... i gave up my old name along with all my possessions, my old work, and my complete old self in 1995, when i was guided to become "maïa" (no capital, no ‘last’ name)...for a while, i wandered the most people-less parts of this country, without a name and the navajo, apache and hopi i met there, called me "No-Name-Yet"...they understood i was on what they call a "vision quest" and knew my name would come to me when i was ready for it... it finally did, when i was in the greek islands for 6 weeks...
i found out later, that maïa is a greek word that means "great mother, little mother, midwife...and witch"!... all of which seem to apply to me, in some way...and then, of course, there’s Maïa, either the largest or brightest [I never remember which] of the Pleiades, named for the daughters of Atlas, the titan… and granddaughters of Gaea, the earth herself…
lordofhats 12-05-2007, 07:25 PM Wow maia, that is interesting. May I enquire as to how long that journey took?
ILTBY 12-05-2007, 08:03 PM Wait... why did you think I was a girl? and what did you think my name was?
I don't know...just one of those things :)
And I had no idea, but it would have been female :p
Cogito 12-05-2007, 08:16 PM Wow maia, that is interesting. May I enquire as to how long that journey took?
Seems to me that the journey never ends :)
lordofhats 12-05-2007, 08:18 PM Seems to me that the journey never ends :)
 Silly me.
adamant 12-05-2007, 08:25 PM I don't know...just one of those things :)
And I had no idea, but it would have been female :p
No idea what any of that means. Guess you never realized that it has our sex symbol underneath our reputation point bar, eh?
ILTBY 12-05-2007, 08:29 PM Surely I'm not that illiterate.
I don't know why I thought you were a female, I just did :)
And I had no idea what your name was, but considering I thought you were a woman it would have been a female name.
Yup, I had realised...just never looked at yours ;)
The Freshmaker 12-05-2007, 08:51 PM <-------------- Mallory.
Mostly everyone I know calls me Mal. My boyfriend calls me Malsies. Some members of my family call me Mally.
I hadn't noticed the gender icon thingy....
I'm Kit... and I suppose one or two of you know my proper name... but I prefer Kit. Lol.
mammamaia 12-06-2007, 03:19 PM loh...
don't know what 'journey' you're asking about, but after giving away my home and all in it, i wandered coast to coast and border to border throughout the us and canada by rv for 2 and a half years [starting in '95], which included a month-long at-sea return to greece on my favorite cruise ship, the stella solaris, for a second 6-week stay on mykonos and visits to the neighboring sacred isle of delos...
after that, i gave away the rv and contents too, lived with and helped the hopi on their desolate mesas and ghetto kids in the scary south bronx, lived and worked in homeless shelters in 3 states for a couple of years, then lived all over europe, the us and canada as a freebie house and pet-sitter for some years, finally settling for good here on the tiny, tranquil island of tinian, when i got too old for global schlepping, a couple of years ago... you can get the details on my site, or in an article i wrote for an ex-pat e-zine i'll be glad to forward by email, if you really want to know more...
hugs, maia

Wow!
lordofhats 12-06-2007, 03:24 PM That is impressive. I must say I've never heard anything like that before. It actually sound's like it would make a good book or movie.

I second that.
Torana 12-07-2007, 06:34 AM Those I know well know my real name and I rarely give it out to people unless I do know them well.
You can either call me Tor, Torana or what all my friends call me and that is Shee. It used to be Heshee just because I was a really aggressive person back in highschool. But that name was left behind when I became a mother, please do not call me that.
So yeah my username or my nickname Shee. Either way is fine by me.
Cogito 12-07-2007, 07:10 AM Shee Who Must Be Obeyed (H. Ryder Haggard reference :))
Torana 12-07-2007, 07:13 AM lol Cogito I was waiting for a reply like that from you actually. :) Definately a good one as I should DEFINATELY be obeyed :p:p lol

Nice to meet you! My real name is Edmund (not Edward), you can call me Ed.
Torana 12-07-2007, 07:24 AM Thank you and it is nice to meet you too Ed :)
ILTBY 12-07-2007, 07:26 AM Torana, do you mind if I ask what 'Heeshee' is in reference to? Why is it associated with aggression? I've just never heard the term before.
Hope that's not too intrusive :)
Torana 12-07-2007, 07:41 AM They called me Heshee cause I was always acting less like a female than I should have been. I look female of course cause I am, but acted more like a male. I was the first to stand up for a fight, I never backed down and basically I spent more time around the guys than I did the girls back in school.
The guys always treated me like one of the guys and that is kind of how it came about. I was always called Shee and then when I was always with the guys and never the girls they started calling me Heshee saying I had bigger balls than most of them did as well.....
<Does that make sense cause I'm not sure really?>
Cogito 12-07-2007, 07:45 AM It's amazing the things that other people can feel threatened over. They probably envied you, so felt they had to try to take you down a notch.
The pack always singles out the one who doesn't conform :)
Torana 12-07-2007, 07:47 AM I never minded the name though. But since I closed that chapter of my life I don't like being called that name anymore. It is the whole one door closes and another one opens type of thing I guess.
ILTBY 12-07-2007, 07:48 AM Yep, I understand what you mean Torana :) It's awful that we're expected by society to act feminine to the 'proper' extent. I was like you when I was younger, very much a tomboy and not at all into girly stuff. I'm a bit girlier these days, but I still prefer the company of males and I like a lot of 'guy stuff'. I've always been treated as one of the guys, too, and I have no issue with it.
We should never be made to feel like we have to conform to society's standards. Unfortunately, we all are made to feel like we should be 'normal'.
Torana 12-07-2007, 08:01 AM I am very feminine now compared to what I used to be. Even DOZ can tell you that much lol but still I am not the type to walk around all prissy and all that real female hype sort of thing.
I get along better with males than I do females for MANY reasons. I've more male friends than female and tend to be seen as a threat strangely enough now. But yeah I don't care what people think cause I am 100% happy with who I am and if people don't like that then it is their problem as far as I am concerned.
I act all feminine when need be to keep the peace for family occassions and when I meet guys families for the first few times till I am comfortable with them. Otherwise I just be me.
ILTBY 12-07-2007, 08:13 AM Yup, same :) I can be all girly and pretty when it's a special occasion or a girls' day out, but I'm most comfortable when I'm in a pair of jeans and a small t-shirt :)
I care far too much about what others think, I'm always trying to please everyone else. On the whole, I think I'm a pretty good person, so I guess if people can't accept me for who I am that's their problem.
Torana 12-07-2007, 08:19 AM Good way to think ILTBY! :)
Banzai 12-07-2007, 08:21 AM Indeed. Gender stereotypes are stupid.
Gunslinger 12-07-2007, 11:41 AM Torana, do you mind if I ask what 'Heeshee' is in reference to? Why is it associated with aggression? I've just never heard the term before.
Hope that's not too intrusive :)
Where I'm from a Heshe is a cross dresser, also known as a transvestite.
Where I'm from Torana would be called a tomboy, a girl who acts in a boyish manner (ie. doing boy things).
mammamaia 12-07-2007, 02:27 PM loh and ed...
that's not even the half of it... or a quarter!... would take a trilogy or more to get from start to finish [at least up to where i am now]... just the human shield action in iraq that i volunteered for and ended up pretty much running, is half a movie on its own...
right now, i'm actually in the middle of writing a post-apocalyptic screenplay with real bits of my life with the hopi tossed in... and my so-called 'retirement' here on tinian is becoming yet another full length feature!...
hugs, m
ILTBY 12-07-2007, 09:42 PM Gunslinger, in Australia, a male who is feminine is often called a 'shim'...they're all pretty offensive terms.
Gunslinger 12-08-2007, 06:31 AM Gunslinger, in Australia, a male who is feminine is often called a 'shim'...they're all pretty offensive terms.
Heshe in the U.S. is slang, and offensive, but tomboy is not offensive here.
ILTBY 12-08-2007, 06:44 AM Nah, tomboy isn't offensive here either :) But there are a lot of derogatory terms for feminine males/gay men/transvestites/drag queens.
