View Full Version : Behind the Names?

Frost this is a direct answer to your question about my hat obsession. At first I was just gonna answer but I figured it would make a good thread to ask why people use the online name they use.

Lord of Hats was developed while I played Gunbound on my PC. At first it was just a running gag using a screen name "Likemyhat." I wore a different hat in the game each day. Eventually someone just called me Lord of Hats and the name stuck. Lord of Hats is the name I now use for everything. Ienjoy the originality of the name and its especially entertaining for online games.

Why do you use your screen name?

I made "evizaer" by putting "realize" backwards and messing with the letters. :D

Cicero

I thought Cicero said, "I think, therefore I am." But I had the wrong philosopher in mind - it was Descartes.

But I don't want to go through the trouble of changing my name. So it's staying.

Does this mean we're related?

Cogito ergo sum.

That's interesting. I never noticed.

Gunslinger

I love the character created by Stephen King who is a gunslinger. My signature is the first sentence from the first book out of seven books based around the character. I still remember sitting down and opening the book and reading the first sentence, I was hooked.

Crimson Threnody

Threnodies. Lovely, and red is one of my favorite colors - and crimson just flows off the lips so well at times.

Thus, Crimson Threnody (Since Crimson Lament was taken on other sites...THE BUGGERS!)

Yep, I noticed that after I joined.

Is it Latin? I assume.

adamant

adamantium. The metal bound the Wolverine's skeleton in the X-Men universe. That and the definition of the actual word made me want to use it as a screen name. In addition, I hadn't seen anyone else using it.

However, I've grown quite fond of using Li-ion, Lithium Ion, onitsuka, and onitsukaSamba. As I was born in August, my zodiac sign is a Leo -- I don't really pay attention to those things -- but the connection seems kinda cool. Onitsuka Tiger is a brand of shoes I wear; I believe the first word means "Demon Handle" or something like that. Like the word 'Samba', I just like pronouncing it.

Yeah, in Latin the whole phrase means "I think, therefore I am.", but just "Cogito" means "I think", or "To think", or something along those lines.

Oh, I thought Cog was using ergo to say Cogito "meaning" sum :rolleyes:. Makes sense though. I'm gonna guess "ergo" means "therefore" in latin?

had to come up with a better name than I have on other boards.
I like the Pern books and Lessa was a great character.
on other board I am momlynda and the other is gammafine.
figured Lessa was a bit better.

I have Frost just because I liked the way it sounded. And that's it.

I'd wondered about that. The Pern books are great :D

Banzai means "Ten Thousand Years", and is a Japanese victory cry/warcry. I adopted it some years ago when I started writing for a friend's (now defunct) website. I can't remeber why I chose it, probably because it sounded cool. I was about twelve at the time :p

Banzai, you ARE cool! :p

Dropbear_oz because dropbears are bears that live in trees in Australia. They have long fangs and claws and drop down on people and maul them. And Oz, because, well, Australia. Think Killer Koalas.

Montag, as in Guy Montag in the book 'Farenheit 451'.

No real reason, I just like it.

It's catchy :) You'd be surprised how many people can't spell it, though. It often comes out as ITLBY.

Domoviye
12-05-2007, 03:09 AM
Domoviye is a type of Russian and Northern European Elf that lives behind the stove and helps with chores as long as certain things are done to keep it happy. If the owner of the house angers a Domoviye it will proceed to make his family's life a living hell until its appeased.
When I was 14 or 15 I needed an e-mail address and I wanted something original, so I looked through a book about European fairies and little people. Domoviye sounded interesting and I could spell it.
So I started using it and its not well known, so I can use it almost anywhere without having to put a number on it or anything.

My older sister called me this when we were young because she couldn't say my name properly. It stuck.

I'm also know as Cornish Maid elsewhere because I'm cornish and a maid (though a somewhat 'older' maid).

Cogito
12-05-2007, 08:00 AM
Oh, I thought Cog was using ergo to say Cogito "meaning" sum :rolleyes:. Makes sense though. I'm gonna guess "ergo" means "therefore" in latin?

Yes. In Latin, the pronoun is specified in the verb. So:
cogito = I think
cogitas = you think
cogitat = he/she/it thinks
etc.

ergo = therefore

sum = I am
eras = you are
erat = he/she/it is

I started out with this username on another forum that discusses the TV show Heroes. Because I was very opinionated and had lots of theories about where the plot was going, I knew I'd be saying "I think ..." a lot, ergo the name choice.

Later I decided to work on my writing skills, and followed the link to this site. I kept the name from the other site rather than create a new one.

Fortunately, I am nowhere near as opinionated here! ;)

Raven
12-05-2007, 08:27 AM
My name Raven was earnt when I was in the army. But there are millions of users called raven and I do hate having a number by my name. So because I live In an isolated Town in the UK called Hull I decided to put the Hull before the Raven making my name unique and renowned. I am the only user on the internet with the name Hulls raven definitely making me Unique. Its my email address and everywhere I am a member its the name I use.

Because I earnt the name Raven everyone I know calls me Raven.
