What are some movies you've seen recently that you'd recommend? I'm always on the lookout for new movies to try and I often like recommending them, too, so I thought it might be cool to have a movie recommendation thread.

Some recent ones I'd recommend are-

- Blood Diamond - just an incredible story. Very violent, but excellent if you can cope with the emotion in it
- Dream Girls - probably more of a girly movie, though it's quite dramatic and sad
- Transformers - very well directed and good acting
- 300 - incredible directing and special effects. A very nice story, too. Though, the inaccuracies would annoy you if you've studied Sparta :p

That's all I can think of for now :)

Heres a few I've recently watched I've rated them as 5 excellent and 1 crap.
Shooter 5/5
Fly Boys 100/100 Bloody brilliant film if for the visuals of the planes dog fighting.
Next 4/5
Die Hard 4.0 4/5
Spiderman 3 5/5

Spiderman 3 was too long in the end. By the time it ended, everyone in the cinema was like, THANK GOD! It was good, don't get me wrong, but there were some parts that just went on for too long, as if the people making it were like, we HAVE to make this a reallly long movie.

But it was ok.

Now recomendations:

Transformers.
Die Hard 4.0 was cool.
.....Now I'm trying hard to think of movies....
Havn't really been watching much latley. :(

My top 3 movies, that I never seem to get tired of.

1. The Fountain - Holy God. I can't stress how much you need to see this film. I can see why it's not popular. It requires some thinking. But it will blow your mind.

2. A Beautiful Mind - Great movie. Will make you appreciate other people a little more.

3. Black Hawk Down - The first war movie where I really feel attached to all the characters. Where they really have.. feelings, and stuff.

I think on the whole, Spiderman 3 was a huge flop. No one I know liked it and it got some terrible ratings.

Despite being a huge John McLane fan, I'm ashamed to admit I still haven't seen the fourth Die Hard.

Heard excellent things about the Fountain, I really should see it. I have the soundtrack actually and the music itself is absolutely incredible.

Have never seen a Beautiful Mind, I don't know if I would ever be able to make myself sit down and watch it, I just can't seem to watch movies like that.

Same with Black Hawk Down. I constantly hear good things, but I can't imagine myself enjoying it.

Black Hawk Down is an Exception. I too love that film for how it portays the events.

A Beautiful Mind was a good film but I couldn't watch it a second time. As for Spiderman 3 it wasn't much of a flop here but then the first and second i really didn't like. Die Hard 4 is good no doubt there.

I absolutly hated the fountain. I found it boring and drawning.

Next is good and the ending is unexpected. As for Fly Boys hell thats worth checking out. The air battles and camera imagery alone make that film a must but the fights are wow. And the storyline was written by someone who could write on true events. Some sad moments especially when they lose the tiger.

And Shooter was well written well acted and good all round. Best for a saturday night viewing though.

Good Will Hunting was cool... one of my favorites.

The problem with Spiderman 3 was they crammed too much into it - 3 villians, two of whom were brand new to the series and therefore had to be developed from scratch. On top of that they added a triangle between Peter, Mary Jane, and Gwen Stacy.

When all was said and done, it made for shallow, rushed character development. Still, the Spidey combat scenes had that whirlwind precision that was pure thrill.

Spider man was all dazzle, with no depth. Like fools gold.

Shooter is an awesome movie, I rate it highly.

American History X is gruesome and brutal, but a good watch, and quite enlightening.

Black Hawk Down is an Exception

With a capital E what's more.

August Rush - its still in theatres but it is a really really good movie. I absolutely love it.

I know Pirates of the Caribbean are a big hit (i love them). The third one just came out on DVD this past Tuesday. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix comes out on Tuesday...

Um, I watched The Notebook last night....that was really good. I cried.

It was mentioned before and I'm going to mention it again....TRANSFORMERS! I loved that movie.

But that's all I can think of right now....

Yeah. One word Crud.

And Pirates of the Caribean 3 At Worlds End also lacked. I found the film rubbish. It felt as though a load of actors had gotten together dressed up and played lets have a doss about. And were the hell did the plot go. Still i really did like one part of the film THE CREDITs couldn't have come sooner either.

I wanted to see Children of Men when it was in the cinemas but still haven't gotten around to it, even though it's on DVD. I loved Pirates 3, it made me laugh more than the first two and I thought it was very well done. I'd also like to see Scarecrow, I've heard good things about it.

Another one I would recommend is the Holiday, just a really nice, feel-good movie. Sin City is another masterpiece, as is Brokeback Mountain, though many wouldn't agree.

I also love the Wrong Man (Lucky Number Slevin is the American title). It's similar to the Departed, but I think it's better.

Pirate OTC, bored me to death.

Especially the last one, it just rolled on and on and on, I turned it off after an hour and a half.

If anything saves the movies from complete damnation it's Johnny Depps acting, my God he was funny as Jack Sparrow.

I enjoyed Children of Men because I'm into speculative fiction, I'm interested in reading the book.

As for favourites, I like the ole 80's early 90's chick flicks, like Some Kinda Wonderful and Pretty in Pink.

I can't stand Tim Burton movies. They're all so gothic and depressing. I'm, amazingly, not a fan of Johnny Depp either. I find the POTC movies laughably bad and very lame.

I'm still yet to see Children of Men but Clive Owen's face physically repulses me.

I also love the Wrong Man (Lucky Number Slevin is the American title). It's similar to the Departed, but I think it's better.
Really? I thought it was pretty bad, certainly nowhere near as good as The Departed. Scorsese is a genius. Check out Casino, which is my personal favourite.

Recent movies I'd recommend are: Into the Wild and Rogue (an Australian film that I doubt would get much screentime in the rest of the world - by the director of Wolf Creek)

Other movies:

American Beauty - a classic if you haven't already seen it.

Contact - better than Forrest Gump IMO, but Robert Zemeckis is all-class (excluding Beowulf which was terrible, even in 3-D)

The Hills Have Eyes (2006) - bringing brutality back to the horror genre, which has been lacking in recent years. Also directed by Alexandre Aja who is my vote for best Horror director of this decade.

Hard Candy - an intense and excellent movie with a heavy adult theme (full of twists)

Anyway, just my selections.

I saw Into the Wild and thoroughly enjoyed it. Actually I would have cried at the end if I didn't look away from the movie screen to prevent myself from shedding a tear. I love Sean Penn's movies. All of the film's music was written and performed by Eddie Vedder (of Pearl Jam)... he did such a wonderful job too, I was completely moved.

GO SEE IT!

Haha, really? I loved it, I thought it was very well done and very entertaining. The Departed was great, but I couldn't get into it. I hired out Casino once, but never got around to watching it. Goodfellas was good, though very violent.

If you want to watch a movie that will make you cry and make you very, very depressed, watch 'Grave of the Fireflies".
It's an anime, about two orphans in WW2 Japan. It starts off with the narrator dying and goes downhill from there. Its semi-based on a real life story, so very realistic. The animation is superb. The voice acting (it comes in English so no subtitles) is excellent, the five year old sister is really 5 years old. And while its anti-war it doesn't make one country good and the other bad. It is mostly anti-pride. It shows many times how Japanese military pride, and the older brothers pride destroyed Japan, and caused so many hardships for his sister and himself.
If you want proof that a cartoon can deal with mature themes, and be just as good as the best live action movie watch this.

That is done by the same company and director. Its a very good movie if you like fantasy.
Its about a young, apathetic girl forced to grow up when she and her parents end up in the Spirit world. Little bit of romance, some danger, some mystery, and a lot of wonder. Disney did the dub for it, and they did one of the best English dubbings I've ever heard.
If you can rent it do so. Its a nice, fairly light hearted movie, with some morals to it. But it doesn't beat you over the head with them.

Adelaide. Nice place.

I have a movie question for you, since you live in the Blue Mountains.

What Australian movie was filmed in the Blue Mountains where the residents of two farm properties are being terrorised by an unknown creature, which is supposedly a panther-size feral cat?

Another question: have you seen any of these panther cats out there? They're now roaming the Blue Mountains, have been caught on tape numerous times. Been on the news here. Government conspiracy apparently, and they've been covering it up for 100 years. But it's still quite spooky (if you live out in the bush) to suddenly come across a panther when you're not in North, South, Central America?

I liked Time After Time, with Malcolm McDowall as H.G. Wells, David Warner as Jack the Ripper, and Mary Steenburgen as Wells' love interest in the present day (1979). In Wells' own time, constables in London track Jack the Ripper to a dinner gathering held by Wells, where it is discovered that the Ripper is a doctor, one of Wells' guests. The doctor steals the time machine that Wells had been pointing out to his guests to escape justice, but did not know of an auto-return feature. When the machine returns empty to Wells' lab, he resolves to follow the murderer and return him before he can ruin the paradise that Wells believes the future to be. When he arrives in 1979, he soon discovers that the future is no paradise. The Ripper has resumed his killing spree in a time where he is just one of many serial killers. But he wants Wells' machine so he can pursue his murderous hobby with all time at his disposal, and abducts Wells' new love interest to force Wells to hand over the key.

The movie has plenty of action and humor, and the interactions between the naive Wells and the psychotic doctor are wonderful.

Hmmm, I don't have the time to read through all the posts and I'm quite sure it has already been made, but just for good movies' sake, I fully recomend Blade Runner. This film is masterfully directed with beautiful and haunting imagery in a far-off dystopian future. Harison Ford delivers a wonderful performance as a pained and dark blade runner. This film basically is the inspiration for all sci-fi of today. Also, the Final Cut edition is coming out sometime in December meaning you can full on enjoy it if it's your first time! :D

Trainspotting - a well adapted portrayal of one of the books by my favorite author, Irvine Welsh with solid, on par acting and good directing.

Shawshank Redemption - There's no description necessary, just see it, damn you.

Lord of War - Although, it may have recieved sub par ratings in the box office, I rather enjoyed Nicholas Cage's performance as an arms dealer and found the plot the unraveled around him to be quite interesting. Even though Jared Leto's kind of an elitist prick, he's a good actor, and played the **** up brother quite well. I highly recommend this flick.

I have to disagree with all the high regard for the two new Pirates. Both of those movies were visual eye candy and that's truly it. The character development they made in the original was completely gone in a confusing and eventually unsatisfying plot.

Spiderman 3 was extremely irritating. From Christmas of '06 I was waiting; waiting for it to come out. The only good part was any clip that was in the trailer...

Lord of War is one of those movies that I approach extremely apprehensively and find myself wrapped into the deep, involving story. Also, the acting on Cage's part was truly fantastic.

Spiderman 3 was extremely irritating. From Christmas of '06 I was waiting; waiting for it to come out. The only good part was any clip that was in the trailer...
Wow, excellent taste and opinions! :)

I can't say I really liked Lord of War, though - it was just a B-grade movie that I'll never see again. Leto was great in Requiem for a Dream, which in itself is an amazing movie. It also stars Jennifer Connelly, my favourite actress. She's also quite nice on the eyes. ;)

You're not kidding about Connelly. As far as pleasing on the eyes... Johansson takes the cake. But Johansson lacks what Connelly doesn't...acting skills.

:-D I'm a dirty pervert.

I'm new to this forum; so, I'm curious, is swearing discouraged? Because I swear like a sailor, let me tell you.

Requiem for a Dream was incredible, but so ridiculously depressing. I don't think I could ever see it again, it's too awful. Still, amazingly done, it really opens your eyes. The soundtrack is great, too.

And yes, swearing is automatically censored :)

I loved Die Hard 4.

Hot Fuzz took it to new comedic levels with that shoot-out. :p
