When I was a kid (still am), when I complained to my father "I'm bored!" He would always say go read the dictionary. I finally listened instead of pouted. Well, after a while, it became better than a replacement for boredom. It became something I looked forward to! This built my vocabulary very quickly, and among other things, allowed me to win a game of Scrabble now and then.

Scrabble is a vocabulary building tool too, and now there's a software version that allows playing online against real people. You'll learn new words quickly if you see a word you never heard of, then spend the time finding out it's meaning and usage.

And now, thanks to mammamaia, if I got nothing to play on the Scrabble board, I'll just yell MAYONAISE! Erm... something like that. :D

Maia, thank you for that tidbit. Other times I have tried looking into the etymology of Mayday, I only found references that said its origin was uncertain, but that it was chosen because it comes through clearly over a noisy connection. The one you provided makes more sense.
