    Hint #1

There are many little footprints outside the house.

    Hint #2
The man is near the fireplace.
  3. Phil
Has the fire been lit recently?
  4. Mercurial
Hundreds of Little People came to the mans house and roasted him above the fireplace, and the smoke caused him to lose conciousness?

 I really wanna know now! :D
  5. Mcarpenter
Phil: Was the fire lit recently?
    Yes! Probably still is.

Merc: Did tiny men come and roast him over a spit?
Sorry, no cannibalism in this one though. Maybe next time! :D
  6. Phil
    Is it the man's house?

If not, are there any signs of forced entry?

    Phil, you asked:
    Is it the man's house?

    no

Are there any signs of forced entry?
    no
    :DYou're on the right track.

Did he fall down the chimney and his little 'helpers' try to get in and save him?

And is he wearing a red suit?

Possibly some stockings hung on the mantle with care, in hopes that St. Nickolaus will soon be there? :D

Or am I barking up the wrong 'tree'? :p

I forgot to post the solution.

    THE STORY:
T'was the night before Christmas, and all through the house was the strong, smoky odor of Santa's red blouse.

Tired after a long journey, Santa forgot to check a chimney before climbing in. A fire was going and Santa was overcome by the smoke. Upstairs, little Justin and Katie heard a strange "thud". They sneaked downstairs and peeked into the living room. Much to their surprise, they spotted Santa "asleep" on the floor.

Unsure of what to do, they ifnally began tugging on his fluffy white beard. Santa awoke with a start, then managed to cough up a hoarse "Ho-ho-ho!" After some milk and cookies, Santa felt better. He thanked the children and then magically disappeared -- through the front door!
