My Thoughts on the US 2016 Presidental Elections

By Link the Writer · Nov 10, 2016 · ·
  1. So after having some time to calm down from the shock of Donald J. Trump being the next President of the United States, something just occurred to me. Something that I hadn't even considered before.

In some way, both he and Obama proved that America is indeed the land of opportunity. Policies aside, think about it: Before Obama came, all the presidents were old white guys. Before Trump came, they all had years of political experience. Again, policies aside... isn't that a good thing? I grew up believing that in America, you can be whatever you want to be if you put your mind to it. Well, in some way...Obama and Trump both showed that.

You don't have to be an old white guy to be President of the United States; you don't have to have decades of political experience to become President of the United States, or come from the elite class. You just need to have a shitload of money and the belief that you can be the President. If the Trump vs. Kanye 2020 thing is to believed, we'll again see it play out.

Look, my own personal political beliefs is that you do need some political experience before you run for the highest office in America; but I still can't help but wonder if both Obama and Trump were taking that statement and making it a literal reality without even knowing it.

Anyway, that's what's on my mind right now.

Obama had twelve years in two kinds of elected office. But yes it is an interresting question what experience is enough. I do think Trump's inexperience is a weakness but it doesn't disqualify him of course. He won't be working alone anyway.

Exactly. However, I do think he's the only one who can push the red button. I watched a fascinating series on 60 minutes about what has to happen before all that. I think I'll try to find a short clip about it.

I find that this sheds some light upon the reason that Trump won the elections.

In short: Peoples reaction upon trying to escape the prior technocrats that were in power and their hidden political agendas. Hillary Clinton, being part of this group, didn't stand a chance. She was way too "elite" to win the working class's sympathy and trust. Bernie Sanders stood higher chances. Bringing him down turned out to be a huge mistake.

Yup Bernie was by some metrics more popular than her and definiteky more trusted and exciting. Woud had more active voting voters and a clearer superiority to Trump's record than Hillary's equally shady record.

What brought Trump to power was the mistaken belief that he'll deliver on any of his nonsense, and pandering to that great untapped resource in our country... Angry White Men whose formal education ended with high school, and who aren't succeeding, and blame immigrants, globalization (btw, they really do believe the Jews are running the show), and of course us Liberals, who have our fingers in everyone's pie.
It's all over now, except the tears.
Four years hence, when the rust belt States that turned this election with their battlecry, "White Lives Matter", and the dust has settled, will still not have the manufacturing jobs that left decades ago, and they'll wonder how it is that a billionaire playboy real estate scammer wasn't their messiah after all.

The critical error the Democrats made, and I'm guilty of too, is we discounted Bernie Sanders and his supporters.
Bernie Sanders at the top of the ticket, and Hillary Clinton as Vice... we would have won.

As it is now, we all have the exact government we so richly deserve.

Which is why I never voted. And your line, "It's all over now, except the tears" reminded me of the song, It's All Over but the Crying by Inkspot.

Trump may turn out to be the biggest liar in the world and never bring any jobs back to the rust belt but what would you have the people there do? Their jobs have all but dried up and this man promises them jobs, jobs that Hillary and the democrats are not offering them.

Better to take a chance on the guy who says he can but could be lying then trust in the established government that continues to ignore them.

Put yourself in their shoes before you condescending look down on them for their choices.

You forgot to add not caring about the American people as a prerequisite.

@Iain Sparrow Glad to have to have found someone on the internet who admits they discounted Bernie when it mattered. Now I get to tell you how much I hate you guys...
