Problems With Writing

  1. I have a problem with writing. I get this great idea, I get it organized, and then I sit down to write it. I get to through the first few pages and then I get bored. I don't want to wait for the plot to develop, I want the climax to be done with and the perfect ending written. I don't want to write all about the characters before the story actually starts. It's boring for me to put in all that unimportant, but interesting stuff that adds to the story. Anybody have any suggestions?

I can tell you what worked for me : ). I started from the middle. My story began roughly two years prior to the "main" event, so I just started in a place much later than the real beggining, and with that I made the piece more suspenseful (you really want to know why people act that way, how they got there, etc) and I let myself write the fun parts first.

I used to have the same porblem, more or less, so I tried poetry. The 'climax' in poetry can very very intense, if it is written well. But do not underestimate the genre - for a professional, writing an excellent poem often takes at least a week. That is, of course, assuming that you've already done the appropirate research on elements such as tone, rythem/meter etc.

I find that writing poetry need not be a 'continuous' as writing a story.

    I hope that helps...

Are you maybe planning too much of the story out in advance so that there's not much for you to discover in the story and you end up getting bored with it pretty quickly? Maybe start a fresh story with less "organized" in advance so that you come to the writing each time wondering what's going to happen next and excited to discover that. With my current story, I've got a plot, I know how I want it to end, I've got my MC and a couple characters, but then that's it. I have to figure out everything else on the fly.

If the rest of the story is that unappealing to you, that's a problem with the story. I can understand having trouble starting, but if the ending is the only thing of appeal, then the story is in trouble. My suggestion is to find a way to make most of the story appealing to you. There will undoubtedly be slow spots but done right and you should enjoy writing most of the story.

Practise. Take account of aspects of writing you have difficulty with and purposefully focus on getting to grips with the challenges they present. Otherwise, write simply what you like, staying away from problem areas, and then see if the resultant story/segment comes close to what you want. I suspect it won't, which may lead you to realise that you might not have the necessary motivation required for writing fiction.
