A character has to be relatable. Someone that you could speak up for. Someone that can be hurt, either emotionally or physically.
As long as no one is talking I'm good.
Write what you know, and if you don't know something; look it up. Writing what you know doesn't matter as long as the story is realistic to you.
A story should be crisp and concise. I hate it when people write more than they need. Back story is OK as long as it is done right.
