I was born Monte (Montgomery James) Thompson, in Tacoma Park, Maryland in 1966 to my mom Marie and my dad J.R. (who is an author as well – www.jrthompsonauthor.com). I have two younger half-sisters and an older brother. My stepfather was a college basketball coach so the family moved around quite a lot until we finally settled in Wheatridge, Colorado. Following in my older brother, Michael’s footsteps, I began singing songs with the guitar at a young age
For a short while, at the age of fifteen I was homeless, playing music on the streets. Eventually I sought out Michael and shacked up with him in Morrison, Colorado. Shortly thereafter, in the middle of a winter storm, the two of us hopped Greyhound busses and entertained bus terminal winos from Denver up to the new family home in Grand Forks, ND. There, I settled back in with my family and pursued a High School diploma.
I joined the US Navy in 1984 to see the world. I left the Navy (which I discovered is an acronym for ‘Never Again Volunteer Yourself’) in 1989 and joined my ailing mother’s side in the new family home in Moscow, Idaho. She passed a year later at just 47 years of age. I decided to take her advice, went north to the beautiful mountain lake town of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, and put my head into music.
During this period I became a sea kayak guide, adventure ropes course counselor, started my own renaissance sword fencing school, learned graphic design, and had many misadventures which, God willing, will never see print. I also started an original rock band called ‘Kite’ (www.kitetheband.com) with three other guys. I continued to play in bars and hotels but after twenty years of working to make a break in the music industry I decided to leave the band and pursue a relationship with a wonderful woman I had met from Ireland.
I now reside in Northern Ireland with the same said ‘wonderful woman’ and have recently completed my first novel (which, I assume, is the reason you are here reading this).
From childhood, I have been an avid fan of fantasy and science fiction, which by defaults made me a gamer, a geek and a nerd. Over the years of driving long hours into the night to or from gigs, I conceptualized stories. It was in these environs that The God String developed.
Finally, at peace in a place I felt at home, I could work on the story in earnest. When it came, it came in a flood. The novel was written in three weeks in a series of thirteen to fifteen hour days. When it was done I had a Coke® Zero and watched some TV with my Wonderful Woman who simply said, ‘Good job. Are you done with the computer now? I’d like to check my email. To which I responded, ‘Bad news hon, it’s a trilogy.’
