That hardly constrained his performance. He wasn't exactly emotional, the only real use for the face in acting.
Has anyone seen Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas? That was an odd film to say the least... Had some really poetic moments in there randomly that really caught me off guard. "We had all the momentum; we were riding the crest of a high and beautiful wave... So now, less than five years later, you can go up on a steep hill in Las Vegas and look West, and with the right kind of eyes you can almost see the high-water mark—that place where the wave finally broke and rolled back." - Hunter S. Thompson. Might need to read the book now...
Isn't it amazing the kind of beautiful things some people can write when they are totally wasted off their ass?
The film follows the book very closely. They did add a few things, took out the the ending of the book, and moved one or two small things around, but other than a few points it's pretty much exactly the same.
I agree, Johnny Depp's performance was inspired. He could be Hunter S Thompson in his portrayal in the movie.
I watched Shutter Island. I really enjoyed it but I need to learn to go into movies like that with a more open mind.
Yes they were. I think Depp did a reading at Thompson's funeral as well as paying the costs for his ashes to be blasted into the sky, as was his wish.
"Gentlemen! You can't fight in here, this is the war room!" - Dr. strangelove or how I learned to love the bomb
I saw These Final Hours last night. It's OK. technically good and the ideas are sound, but there is too much over acting, which is really distracting, and some of the logic doesn't make sense. The sentiments are also a bit exploitative and simplistic and the 'heart' of the film pretty dry. It's a forgettable film that could have been great. In the end, it's a bit of a bore.
Any fans of Billy Wilder? For those who have not seen Ace in the Hole, Double Indemnity, Some Like It Hot, The Apartment, Stalag 17, The Lost Weekend, Sunset Boulevard, or Witness For the Prosecution, you need to make that the next 8 things you do.
Tonight I'll be watching Guardians of the Galaxy preview at IMAX Sydney (The biggest screen in the world... yay!). So hopefully it delivers.
I just watched Authors Anonymous on Netflix. Hilarious! It's about a group of unpublished writers who critique each other's work. Then one of them becomes a success, and the others are super jealous. It's mockumentary style. Kaley Cuoco and Jonathan Banks are in it, if that persuades any one to watch. I thought it was funny and entertaining, but it only got a 7% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. For me, the only major disappointment was that all the writers were focused on becoming rich and famous. I would have liked to see just one character write merely for the love of it.
Watched an excellent film called Starred Up the other night. It's about a Young Offender that is sent into the adult prison system and meets his estranged father. It deals with many of the issues you would expect (corruption, institutionalisation, homosexuality, violence etc) but beyond that it is a tale of two hardened men - one beyond rehabilitation and one desperate to take on all comers in order to ensure his own safe passage through the system - and how they approach the father/son dynamic in these, most arduous of circumstances. Powerful, emotive stuff.
Turns out it wasn't a preview but the Australian Premiere. Anyway, the film was humorous and fun, but nothing more. I wouldn't watch again, most likely, but it was enjoyable.
Just watched the original Godzilla, the one with subtitles before they made the Raymond Burr version for the US market. Fascinating, much more anti-American but still subtle.
Just watched The Hole (2009 version). What a heap of shit. Also, watched Zombieland too in a bit of a horror film marathon. That, on the other hand, is such a good film!.
