    Tech Problem

Discussion in 'Writing Software and Hardware' started by EdFromNY, Jul 25, 2014.

My son's desktop monitor is suddenly much less bright and tinted red. Anyone know of a fix? I tried downloading the most recent drivers for the monitor. No dice. Really, really, really hoping it isn't the video card.

    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Have you tried checking the monitor's display settings? Some desktops have shortcut buttons that instantly switch color schemes.

Also, how old is it? It could just be a sign of imminent failure.

It's a Dell desktop, about 5 years old, with no buttons, knobs or switches on the unit at all.

Have you checked the cables and connectors to eliminate the possibility of bad cables or ports?

Try unplugging the cable that connects the monitor to the graphics card, and plug it back in. It could just be a loose connection. If that doesn't fix it, try using another cable. If it still doesn't work, there might be something wrong with the monitor.

Have you tried slapping both sides simultaneously or lightly hammer-fisting the top a couple times? That's about all the tech advice I can offer.

Honestly I had that happen once and it was the video card. try hooking the monitor up to a different computer and seeing if it still has a red tint. If it does then you know it's the monitor. :)

I had a friend in college who was fond of saying, "If you can't fix it with a ball pein hammer, get a bigger ball pein hammer."

    I don't want to hear that.:wtf:

If it's not the cable, yeah, I can give that a try. Or hook up another monitor to the PC.

Definitely try connecting the monitor to another output source. If it works fine in other places, it could be signs of a failing graphics card.

If it is the graphics card, you can try cleaning and reseating the graphics card if it is a dedicated card; however, if it is an integrated graphics card, you will need a new computer.

wait, is not one of those cathode ray tubes is it , cuz you can fix those with a magnet. just wave a magnet near the screen a voila, the red is gone.
