Does Gordon Ramsay ever use that pencil he has tucked behind his ear? Or is it just a fashion statement?

Apparently it's his trademark. So an egotistical fashion statement.

Yes, he uses it whenever he thinks up of a new insult to hurl at his unsuspecting victims. Even when he passes, his angry ghost will haunt bad restaurants. Better bring your rosaries and holy waters.

But not me, 'cause I finally got the HD-TV and now I'm playing Infamous: Second Son on the PS4!!

There are tons of chefs that keep a pencil behind their ear or tucked in their hat. It's a quick way to mark a ticket without taking the risk of dirtying your jacket by pulling it out of your pocket all the time. I, personally, can't stand to have anything tucked behind my ear.

Thanks, everyone, for the birthday wishes! I am now officially 53 years old and am therefore qualified to be your parents! Just wait until next year, when I'll be qualified to be your schoolmarm! :D

EDIT: Oh, wait a minute. I have to be female for that. Not happening, sorry!

    Just thinking little bit:

No, real life is nothing like fiction or fantasy, but shouldn't there be as much joy, as much celebration over things like friendship and love as one would find among fictional characters? Should we not be as earnest in our passions or as sincere in our desires and convictions? Shouldn't our dreams, our hopes, and our journeys be as compelling to us as those in a book, movie, t.v. series, or video game are to the character who hold them? It's true, fiction takes us where we cannot go physically, but perhaps it also takes us where we are afraid to emotionally or mentally.

Hey, I'm sorry I missed your birthday! I hope it was a blast. You're awesome, a true friend. Here's wishing you the best anyway. :)

I feel something like envy when I come across characters who have a very good relationship. Such relationships never seem to exist in real life. There's always that aspect of romanticism that you don't find in real life. Perhaps you're right and it's simply a matter of opening up mentally and emotionally. It's easy for characters to open up because, well, they're characters, and the viewers' entertainment depends on it. In real life, we tend to be more private because, in a sense, there's really no audience, and that gives us the feeling of being alone. So it's really a vicious circle.

That probably didn't make sense, but that's what happens when you've been drinking... ;)

I actually really like this response. (+1 for drinking... this time.) I can attest to feeling a bit of envy for the lives some characters get to lead. They may experience some some negatives that I'd much rather avoid, but they can live in extremes, and extremity is the point (if I'm recalling this quote from Equus correctly). I find that with really good characters, I attach myself to them and ride the highs and lows with them, as if I'm there. I connect with them as if I were in the circle.

Sure, there is an element of romanticism in it all. In real life it would be simply impractical to go to the ends of the earth (or beyond) to recover someone you care about. Also, people in real life tend to have more to fear from opening up than some characters. But what if we were as passionate about our lives as these people are? By this I mean, what if we could get more excited about the things we did... or did more things that made us excited? What if we cared a little more about bonding with the people in our lives and expressing ourselves to them?

Now I'm the one not making sense ha ha.

This would require changing the way we think about such things, which is actually not that hard to do now that I think about it. However, relationships require multiple people, so I think everyone involved would have to change his or her outlook. It would suck being the only one in the relationship who's very passionate and willing to open up. There's an interesting discussion to be had about this and privacy.

I once had a flatmate that was so close we told we both said we loved each other, to each other's faces. I had just broke up with a girl and he sat with me all that day to see if I was alright. Then as night fell he asked if I wanted to go to a bar and get drunk, and I said I didn't know. Then he said 'Well damn it, I'm going to get you f**ked and get you f**ked. I said 'I love you man,' and he said 'I love you too' and we hugged. It wasn't a homosexual thing, it was just that closeness. Friendships like that can exist, they are just very rare I guess.

@minstrel! Happy birthday! :) Sorry if that's late.
