@rainbowt : Good choice! I was just reading an article today, someone was saying 'Cemetery Gates' was their favourite Smiths song. I would struggle to choose one. Basically, for me, the whole 'Strangeways' at the very least, and the list grows from there :)

Another one to add to the list, Tom Waits.

Not sure if anyone mentioned him yet, but Tupac definitely deserves a spot in this discussion. Songs like "Life Goes On" and "Changes" are profoundly deep, especially the former, which is surprisingly self-depreciating.

It's definitely not in the Library of Congress by mistake.

Yeah, it's dangerous to insult any of the fab four, interesting that few here have mentioned any of them?

Of course it's idealistic, and the lines about communist economic equality (no possessions) does not reflect my political philosophy.

But there is so much war in the world, then and now. It's inconceivable to me how it is people are just slaughtering others right and left in so many places. What I hear in those lyrics is simply questioning the belief we should expect the status quo as normal and inevitable. You need to imagine another world if you ever hope to create it.

Harrison had a few songs in this category but I attribute most of the meaningful stuff to Lennon.

The Boss is a great one (I'm surprised no one mentioned U2)

    What about Billy Joel?

Depends how you're interpreting 'deep shitz'.

A Perfect Circle's cover of Lennon's Imagine is I think superior. That said, Lennon was my favourite Beatle. Even if all my favourite Beatle songs were written by Paul. I don't get it either.

If we are talking about 'deep shit' as in shit so big you could stick a stick deep into it, then anything by Nickelback? :)

Not sure if it's "deep shitz", (they do have an album called Mystical Shit) but if we're talking about lyrics and how freaking entertaining and clever they can be: King Missile. And not just that story about a detachable penis, but from the same album also 'Martin Scorsese' and '(Why Are We) Trapped' are pretty damn good.

But I'll post this for anybody who's bored with their corporate job...

    Take stuff from work.

It's the best way to feel better about your job.
Never buy pens or pencils or paper.
    Take 'em from work.
Rubber bands, paper clips, memo pads, folders-take 'em from work.
It's the best way to feel better about your low pay and appalling working conditions.
    Take an ashtray-they got plenty.
    Take coat hangers.
Take a, take a trash can.
    Why buy a file cabinet?
    Why buy a phone?
Why buy a personal computer or word processor?
    Take 'em from work.
I took a whole desk from the last place I worked.
They never noticed and it looks great in my apartment.
    Take an electric pencil sharpener.
Take a case of white-out; you might need it one day.
    Take some from work
It's your duty as an oppressed worker to steal from your exploiters.
It's gonna be an outstanding day.
    Take stuff from work.
And goof off on the company time.
    I wrote this at work.
They're paying me to write about stuff I steal from them.
    Life is good.

Oh gosh, I like good music. :p

My philosophical position has no influence on my taste in music. I also like happy pop music too. :)

Oh yeah, how could I forget Agoraphobic Nosebleed? Some of their lyrics are pretty intense. I even quoted one line from Mantis in the quote thread: "Learn to lick your wounds for the taste."

    Here are the full lyrics:

The world looks like a finger painting done with broken hands
I saw the last mantis today eat its own head and fuck itself
    Into nothing, into nothing
I'm told that we had hands once
And we started carrying knives, now we have knives instead
So even when we try to embrace, we stab

Learn to lick your wounds for the taste
Learn to lick your wounds for the taste

The same guys are responsible for the somewhat more refined lyrics of Pig Destroyer. I laughed out loud the first time I heard the ending of Jennifer: "No, no, no. This is beautiful, this is art."

Jackson Browne has some deep lyrics. So, in their own way, do the Tragically Hip.

I'll probably catch hell here for saying this, but Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull has been known to dig deep, too.

When I was a teenager, I used to read Lou Reed's lyrics from the CD booklets. I couldn't stand listening him sing, but I enjoyed the stories he told.

Yeah, Lou was a classic case of a guy who could write, but he couldn't carry a tune in a bushel basket. A terrible singer. Good songs, though!

If Lulu was anything to go by, the album he made with Metallica, this is 100% accurate.
