hmmmm..... maybe one Christmas morning, a young girl, who wished for a doll from Santa, awakes to find herself inside a box, as a doll. And thus begins her hell.

Unico? Is that the anime about the pink-haired unicorn that gifts people happiness?

Actually, that anime FREAKED ME OUT as a little kid. If you've seen the movie version, you'll know what I mean. All the graphics indicated that it's meant for tiny kids and then a great big frigging scary demon comes and seduces a teenage girl and turns into some giant skeleton and there's a forest full of grabbing branches trying to kill you... *shudders*

Sounds like a product recall warehouse to me, stacked to the rafters with thousands upon thousands of unwanted dolls that had poorly put together parts, terrible stickers for eyes, badly moulded hands, faces and feet, or even the most foul artificial hair that falls out easily and finds its way around you house, into your food and so on.

Here these dolls reside, added to every day as another part pops off into a child's throat and sends them off to A&E. By day, the dolls simply accept their lot in life, welcoming new "recruits" as they are hurled onto the pile. By night, the dolls move. They stumble around on broken limbs, pull themselves along with their still working arms. Voiceboxes crying mechanically into the night.

Each evening, when the doors to the warehouse are locked, the dolls make for the incinerator. But so slow is their progress due to their broken parts that the heat of the switched off machine dies down long before they can reach it, forcing them to assemble themselves in a pile for the morning once more. As their mass increases with each passing day, they try again. One day, one of them might make it.

I saw the movie when I was 4 and it was not age appropriate. The wizard's assistant turning people into little toys... When Unico was turned into one I cried!

This must be a different film - and it sounds equally scary it seems! Maybe Unico had a series of films?

I was wrong on the date of the movie I'm thinking about. The 1981 is the happy one. The one from 1983
Unico in the Island of Magic is the the darker story.

I have no idea what the Unico film I've seen is called, but it involves a black cat called Chao whom Unico turns into a pretty teenage girl. I'm intrigued by the darker story now but not sure if it's wise to watch it lol :D

Some years ago, I had a dream in which a person I knew, though not particularly well, had a number one hit single, the video of which I can still remember. The record was called "Diarrhea", and the chorus went: "Diarrhea; diarrhea; diarrhea - I wanna fight disease in DNA!" It had a vaguely punk vibe, and it was sung by several people in badly-applied white and pink clown makeup riding a roller-coaster.

I have recently promised a Surrealist website that I would recreate this utterly random dream-inspired song as best I could, using only sound-collage elements stolen from songs by other people. The only trouble is, I don't know what the rest of the lyrics were.

Since this is a thread in which somebody came up with five words and is hoping everybody else will write the story for him, may I ask for suggestions regarding the verses of this non-existent song? There's no prize apart from the fact that any verses which strike me as appropriate will be incorporated into a free non-profit album which will appear elsewhere on the web. I'll even give you a writing credit. I reserve the right to ignore all suggestions I don't like for any reason whatsoever.

I think something in the lines of a sequel to Valley of the dolls, the novel by Jaqueline Susann. :D

Call it what it is: a writing prompt.

The dolls could be fashion models, secretaries in a male-dominated industry, labor androids, or to take a page from Joss Whedon, programmable mind-wiped agents. Start from any of those, or an interpretation of your own, and you can surely devise an appropriate hell.

ive been thinking over this again, and debating the book title of my current WIP

    im looking at these options

    An Unseen Empire (Herrscher)
    Herrcher (An Unseen Empire)
    An Unseen Empire
    Herrscher

i cant decide which one to go for (which is annoying, because any would fit the WIP so well its unbelievable...)
oh, and Herrcher is german for Leader.... (or so i am lead to believe.)

Wow, that is a mouthful. Honestly, if I were Pat Garrett, I would've titled it: How I Killed Billy the Kid. Short, simple, and sweet.

@ChaosReigns - I would go for An Unseen Empire: Herrcher. Sounds more epic that way. :D

Leader is Führer. Herrscher means monarch.

If 'voting' is still open I would vote for "An Unseen Empire"

The trouble with Fuhrer, is that the term is now most associated with Hitler. Which is OK if that's what your book is about.

Thank you for the clarification Vandor, it is appreciated (i have little knowledge of german, which is why i struggled with the translation.)

basically this is book 3 of the series and at the end of book 2 the Human MC finds out he is the "Captain Commander" (the term used for head of state in the particular country) of a country he had left 70 years prior (he was travelling for about 10 years and stuck in a different country for 60 more years) and has to run that country alongside his leadership role in a country that he had called home for the past 9 months (reason being leader is that there are 3 different races, each with their own leader) and full armies under his control in both countries. pretty much making an empire (both countries are large. and with a third countries inhabitants following him, he has about 1,000,000 troops in total, giving him the power to obliterate)

he tries to strike a balance between being merciless and compassionate, but being someone with a very very harsh upbringing and forced training regimen, he finds it hard to be compassionate and manage his anger, causing him to lash out.

as CuteCat rightly said, The trouble with Fuhrer is that it is associated with Hitler quite a lot, which isnt what this character is like. i would tell you more, but the plot is so heavily intertwined that it would take forever for me to untangle it to explain it.

that and i dont want to hijack this thread....

I favor short titles. Herrscher is a bit obscure, so I'd be inclined to go with just Unseen Empire.

Thank you Cog, to be honest, i was wondering if Herrscher would be a little too obscure, and whether or not it would work as a title (it being german while the actual novel itself is written in english...)

and ive realised that i well and truly have myself an epic fantasy, with the quantity of stuff going on in it, im hoping that 4 books is enough...

I'm not sure I have a preference of long or short where titles are concerned. My non fiction book has a three word title but then has a five word sub-title. My fiction has a three word title, the WIP fiction has a three word title and the next fiction has a two word title.

I do, however, like titles that are slightly misleading, that can be taken two ways, one of which is the right way.

Quite a while ago (a few years, I think) I came to a conclusion on this matter: Titles should preferably be three words or shorter, but no more than fine.
As time has passed, however, I have come across more and more books with titles of five or more words that have been really good and interesting. I suppose that shorter titles are easier to read and remember and at the same time their brevity makes them sound mysterious. All of these things can be achieved with longer titles as well, with the right words.

Always go with the title that feels just right, no matter whether it has two or seven words.

A publisher I pitched to suggested I change the title of my novel because the meaning is "too deep." I came up with a new title, but found there is another novel by that name. Are any of your titles the same as one already published? Does it matter? I am rather attached to the original title and it's just one publisher's opinion. Not sure what to do.
