Need some opinions on candy flavors loves and hates

Discussion in 'Research' started by peachalulu, Oct 29, 2014.

For one of the shorts I'm doing for Nanowrite candy, and the nostalgia of it, plays a key part. Just want to know ( and pick your brains ) what you generally think of candy? What are your favorites ( even discontinued flavors treats welcome ), and the candy you hate, even the stuff you avoid telling people you hate ( I knew a boy who hated chocolate and hated admitting it ) or even if you don't even like candy.

I hated lavender sweets and now I hate anything that's got lavender in- it seems to have become a popular baking ingredient. I have always refused to eat the lemon and lime sweets in fruit pastilles and hog the strawberry and blackcurrant. Drumstick lollies always remind me of party bags. I suppose it depends where you're from. I've never had candy corn.

I love those little chalk candies like Rockets, and hate chewy gooey jujube candies. I also hate lollipops that are too big to fit in my mouth straight away; I loathe standing there and licking them like a fool.

Cherry flavor in most any candy form. The more maraschino, the worse it gets.
Coffee flavored sweets of any kind. I love coffee, but not coffee flavored other things.
Mint chocolate = Chocolate toothpaste. Gross.
Wintergreen. Not often found outside of gum, but anything based on wintergreen is Pepto Bysmol to me.
Gummy versions of not originally gummy things.

Spree! God they're so good. I don't care that if you suck on too many in a row they irritate your tongue.
Those little strawberry candies that come in individual wrappers that look like strawberrys and they have the soft center, those!
Those bags of gum-balls that are super sour with the cartoon image of a kid squeezing tears from his/her eyes for the sourness.
Blow-Pops. I don't care that they tend to cut the inside of your mouth as you melt them down to occasional air bubbles in the candy coating that open and develop razor sharp edges.

I like any/all candy except those with/taste like coconut or black licorice - okay, candy like gummy bears I don't like, but that's just a texture thing...

Oh, bloody hell. Me too! I LOVE it. And miss it. Can't get it here in the UK, except via special deliveries, etc. I whomped out on candy corn both times I revisted the US and Canada. People just don't understand...:(

Anybody remember SweetTarts? Root Beer Barrels? Those lemon hard candies with the burst of tart lemon juice inside ...can't remember the name. Loved all these.

I hate hard candy that cuts your mouth, although I love the fruity flavours. Barley sugar candy is good because it's got a good texture.

Here in the UK, I LOVE Werther's Originals ...butterscotch candies to die for.

Unfortunately the prettiest candy in the world ...Licorice Allsorts ...is a candy I can't eat. Sweet licorice things really make me nauseous, although any savoury anise-flavoured thing is fine.

Sadly, I hardly ever eat candy any more. No, I'm not diabetic, but I've kind of lost my childhood sweet tooth. Doesn't really appeal.

Chocolate isn't candy. Chocolate is food.

I fucking LOVE candy. My faves are dark chocolate with bacon bits and sea salt and/or caramel.
As far as the mass market candy, I like Heath Bars, Mounds, 100 Grand bars, Nestle Crunch, SweetTarts, Charms Blow Pops, Gummy Bears, and black licorice. I also *love* dark chocolate kit kats.

My older son does not like chocolate (???).
My younger son only likes chocolate. He is *very* particular. He will eat a Nestle Crunch but not a Krackel. He will not eat a purported Nestles Crunch in some kind of other form -- shaped like Santa, or a pumpkin, for example. He will eat a Hershey Bar, but not the one with almonds. He will eat a Hershey Kiss, but not a mini Hershey's. His favorite is a chocolate bar with mini M&Ms mixed in it. Unfortunately, M&M/Mars doesn't market these very heavily, so they're not always easy to find. Costco used to sell them by the case, but stopped.

Thanks guys! lots of good stuff!
    - I'll add to the list. My faves ( since I'm a Canadian you might not know some of these bars - ) Big Turk - it's a chocolate covered cherry jube-jube ( I think it's called Turkish Delight in the states but it's much smaller ) everyone I knew hated Big Turk and one good thing about buying it was I didn't have to share!
Coffee Crisp - I loved eating it in layers.
Lik-m-Aid -I think they're called Fun Dips - those pouches of candy powder with the little pink stick
Gumballs - I especially loved when they came in a strip with funky flavors like ice cream
Macintosh toffee - my mom loved this but it's incredibly hard. Whenever we brought it home she used to whack it against out fireplace to break it into bite sized pieces.
    Gobstoppers
Discontinued junk I like - green freezies ( coconut flavored ) , and those strawberry shortcake ice cream bars which I don't think they make anymore - wah!

    Hates
Those sugary big candy Easter eggs
certain black licorice - though I did like black ball gum
certain foil wrapped chocolate - sometimes it just tastes chalky and cheap
I don't like circus peanuts either - in fact I don't much like candy marshmallows. Something about their slightly sticky - gooey foamy texture I just don't like.
Mr. Big - not crazy about wafers ( with the exception of Coffee Crisp )
Sour apple flavor - which is weird because I love granny smith apples
Bazooka gum - love the comics but damn that gum was terrible

The bar I have a love/hate relationship with
Eatmore - it looks like it's already been chewed up and spat out.

Or the plastic fruit filled with powder with the little screw top stems. I loved those in the 80's they used to come with a plastic string and you'd wear them around your neck. The boys used to collect the pineapples for hand grenades when they played G.I. Joe. But cherry as in cherry bomb would work in a pinch. Of course those creeps used to fill them with dirt and chuck 'em hard enough to leave a bruise.

Lik M Aid and Pixie Stix were good. I kind of shudder to think about it now -- eating essentially pure sugar, just pouring it right into your mouth. Man o man.

Damn it! This thread planted a thought seed, and now I am being forced to go downstairs and raid my trick-or-treat bowl for a 100 Grand bar or two.

Yes! I might have to take this research to the next level. Trips to the dollarstore, the bulk barn and the very yummy Laura Secord chocolate shop are in order.

Lik-M-Aid. Yes, I forgot those. Anybody remember 'all day suckers?' Those ones you could rocket through in several hours if you put your mind to the task?

I remember my younger sister weeping bitter tears when given chocolate at Easter or Christmas. (She doesn't believe me now.) And the only candies she liked—for years—were jelly beans. Only the red and orange ones. She hated all the others. So I used to lurk by the Easter Basket when she pulled them out and laid them aside. MINE...!

And which of the two of us has better teeth and fewer cavities now? You'll not guess it. Me.

I hate licorice, gummy anything and dark chocolate.

    Favorites: Spree, 3 Musketeers

While I had my braces back in the 70s, they came out with the Marathon bar. I was so jealous of my friends because I couldn't have one for four years. Once my braces came off, that was the first thing I asked for. To my dismay, I didn't even care for it and wasn't so sure what all the fuss had been about. Big letdown.

I love chocolate. Including dark chocolate. I hate hard candy, but give me pure milk chocolate bars and Kit Kats.

@peachalulu reminded me of Coffee Crisp! I haven't had one of those in twenty years or so, but they're GREAT! You can only get them in Canada, I think...

I also used to love Oh Henry bars.
