Did you give it the A of plate or the final A of massage? (another word where I think the Brits hit the stress on the front and we hit it on the end)

If I understood correctly, the final A of massage, like [ɑːʒ]. Not vis-eiʒ. :D I had to read a passage (but not pa.sɑːʒ), out loud and my brain went French by the time I arrived at 'visage.'

Well, I would have protested in your favor. Pronouncing visage to sound almost like village (I couldn't think of a closer match, sorry) sounds a little... pedestrian to these ears. I mean, I say cliché as klee-shay (I don't know those fancy pronunciation symbol thingies) not claich or kli-chee. Oh, also, there is a huge daddy thunderstorm here right now, which is why I am up so early. The thunder woke me. I'm praying to get a few more hours sleep.... :(

Ok, thanks for clearing that up. I'm not sure where from the US the prof comes from, so maybe it's a given in that region to say it like in village.

I was wondering why you are still (or, more like already) up. Hopefully the storm'll pass quickly!

I found this on another forum and just had to post it here. (Apologies if you've seen it before).

How many forum members does it take to change a light bulb?

1 to change the light bulb and to post that the light bulb has been changed.

14 to share similar experiences of changing light bulbs and how the light bulb could have been changed differently.

7 to caution about the dangers of changing light bulbs.

6 to argue over whether it's "lightbulb" or "light bulb" ...

Another 6 to condemn those 6 as stupid.

2 industry professionals to inform the group that the proper term is "lamp".

15 know-it-alls who claim they were in the industry, and that "light bulb" is perfectly correct.

19 to post that this forum is not about light bulbs and to please take this discussion to a light bulb forum.

11 to defend the posting to this forum saying that we all use light bulbs and therefore the posts are relevant to this forum.

36 to debate which method of changing light bulbs is superior, where to buy the best light bulbs, what brand of light bulbs work best for this technique and what brands are faulty.

5 People to post pics of their own light bulbs.

15 People to post "I can't see S$%^!" and their own light bulbs.

7 to post URL's where one can see examples of different light bulbs.

4 to post that the URL's were posted incorrectly and then post the corrected URL's.

13 to link all posts to date, quote them in their entirety including all headers and signatures, and add "Me too".

5 to post to the group that they will no longer post because they cannot handle the light bulb controversy.

4 to say "didn't we go through this already a short time ago?"

13 to say "do a search on light bulbs before posting questions about light bulbs".

1 to bring politics into the discussion by adding that George W. isn't the brightest bulb.

4 more to get into personal attacks over their political views.

1 moderator to lock the light bulb thread.

1 forum lurker to respond to the original post 6 months from now and start it all over again.

You forgot the 5 members to argue whether it's ecocide if you don't replace it with a CFL.

Hey, Gigi! :D Things are fine here. Graduated college last year and have plenty of solid, wonderful volunteer gigs while I look for a job. How's things with you?

College is chugging along pretty well. If only work wasn't taking up most of my time, I'd be good.

College has really been kicking my ass lately. I'm glad I'm here, studying what I want to study, but god I miss being able to focus on other things. Thankfully Thanksgiving break isn't too far away.

College can get pretty rough, especially around midterms and end of the semesters. Just hang in there and you'll do fine. If I've learned anything during my years in college is that taking it slow and cutting my assignments into manageable pieces did wonders for my sanity.

And don't forget to get out and a little relaxation in between assignments. A night out can really clear your head and get you back in the game.

I appreciate the advice, everyone! My grades are pretty good and my mindset isn't too awful, but I'm looking forward to this last week before Thanksgiving break.

I find myself having trouble reconciling my dislike of slut-shaming and associated misogyny with my dislike of HIV. Promiscuity is one of those issues that's depressingly complicated.

I don't see the issue. I mean, I understand that being very promiscuous carries with it an increased risk of HIV. And it is legitimate to be worried about that. But you can be worried about that without "slut shaming" and misogynistic blaming women for bad consequences of sex, etc.

HIV is bad enough without it being used to justify emotional abuse and gender bigotry.

There are plenty of respectful ways to try to convince someone to practice safe, responsible sexual behaviors. Those may not be successful, but neither will hateful means.

In the end, people will make their own decisions, and will have to make peace with any consequences that arise.

Hey everyone, got Shadow of Mordor and Minecraft, both for the PS4. The former is looking extremely badass so far, a good choice for anyone into LOTR games and epic fantasy games. The latter is cool, if a bit glitchy and lagging.

So how are things with you all?

It gets lonely playing video games sometimes.

But don't worry, I do other things besides gaming. :D

    *sighs*

Y'know, it's times like this I wish I could have a comeback when I need one! Because now I want to tell @minstrel that squirrels can't play videogames. :p

I wish I had more time to play video games. Darn school! Education is overrated anyway...
