    Feedback plaese

Discussion in 'Character Development' started by Korizan, Dec 20, 2014.

Can you guys give me some feedback on the name:
Darwin (first name) Hitergo (last name)

When hearing this name, what kind of character can you see (example: tall guy with short black hair, blue eyes, with a piercing on his left ear.) something like that.

Just want to see if the name can give me a benefit to my story.

    Thanks for reading.

I like Darwin as a first name, but I don't know how to pronounce Hitergo. Which syllable is accented?

I imagine a 20-something Hungarian man whose parents were academics.

Also, if it's pronounced HI-ter-go, it could sound like the words "hit or go." I imagined the accent on the second syllable.

    I see Hitler.

I know, that's not really justified, but you asked for first impressions, and that's mine. Darwin Hitergo looks like Hitler, in my head. Possibly with vaguely Einstein-ian hair - not sure why. I guess I'm stealing Darwin's beard and putting it on Hitler's head?

Haha. That a good one, is the name really sound over 20?

Darwin is a good name, but one you immediately associate with Charles. So, like others, Charles Darwin sprang to mind; particularly the more famous image of him as a bearded, elderly man.

The surname is not one I have heard and it is rather discordant in my head. I think I would find myself stumbling over it while reading.

I, too, dislike the name Hitergo. It's not really easy to say and is a bit ugly, to my ears.

Just curious - what made it appeal to you in the first place?

I was given some letters to form a name (so I made it up) if you have a better idea, let me know.

    Letters are: D W R O H A I E N T G
Note: I have to use all of them.

Well, my idea would be to not constrict my choices with an arbitrary collection of letters. If this is an exercise - and it sounds like it is - I don't see the utility. Then again, I don't develop my characters based on what I name them; I do it the other way around.

Do you have to use ALL the letters?

If not, Dan Wright would be a bit less peculiar. If you need to use them all... Rodan Weight? Nah, that's still pretty weird. Danoe Wright?

Are middle initials allowed? How about Dean O. Wright?

I always end up thinking of Richard Dawkins every time I see the name Darwin, possibly cus I keep getting the two names confused. Darwin's possibly too famous a name to use like another Jack or Matt...

However, I don't think you have to worry too much. The way people see your character will be the way you build him up. It can sometimes help to have a name that matches the personality, but more often than not, the name grows to fit the personality you write as opposed to the other way around. Think of the names of your friends. Can you imagine them being called anything else? Their name has come to fit their personality perfectly. So it'll be the same for your characters.

So choose the most suitable name you see fit, and then just write a damn good book :)

I imagine a kind of tall, weirdo guy with a fancy hat. He's more about what he's got on than what he's like on the inside.
He may as well be an integral part of a secret organisation or a broker, dealer or suchlike. If I was to re-arrange the name, I'd go for Wade Hartigan, which, to my ear sounds a bit more cool and serious. It all depends on what you expect from the character.

All names that start with a D make me think of a strong character... except Darwin, which makes me think of Charles Darwin. What is the nationality of the character you're creating?
