Sense8. Netflix exclusive. Written/directed by Wachowskis (Cloud Atlas, The Matrix). Mind blowing. That was last week. This week, 3rd season of OITNB.
Watching the second episode of Dark Matter, I have no tolerance for stupid characters/plots. So it's six characters that wake up on a ship with a deadly robot and no memory. After fighting off and disabling the robot ... Spoiler ... they supposedly fix her programming and she's able to pull up the ship's memory telling them they are all criminals who were on a mission to kill some rebelling mining colony on a planet. They have a cargo full of weapons and the miners think the spaceship crew were on their way to deliver them. So here's the stupidity. If they were on their way to kill the miners, why would they have the cargo? And why wouldn't anyone in their right mind consider the robot was feeding them misinformation? You don't have to conclude the information is wrong, but the possibility should still be on the table. Anyway, the plot was so stupid I can't watch any more.
The Last Ship Meh, it's watchable. But the majority of the movie is shooting and running and saving wounded people.
I don't know. If something pissed me off so much, I would stop watching it. I don't really get this Sansa outcry either. I mean I kind of get it, but in the context of GoT, it seems a tad naive: the Game of Thrones universe seems pretty cruel, so I don't know why certain female characters should be shielded from the evils that seem ubiquitous in their world. Just to appease a portion of the audience? Meh. So what it's a diversion from the books? If it really pisses you off, better to find something less aggravating to watch, right? I have abandoned many a tv show cos they weren't to my liking. Stopped watching Dexter cos it got stupid. Stopped watching Orphan Black and the Walking Dead cos they annoyed me more than entertained. I'm rewatching Lexx right now. It's taking itself so unseriously I just can't criticize it. Its production value is pretty low and acting is at times hammy, but it's got a fun cast, it's insanely creative, and it satirizes, well, everything, pretty hilariously. It must have been hard for the show to find an audience, though. I would imagine these expressions were quite prevalent among those who expected Farscape or Firefly but instead got lexxed:
The first episode of the new season of True Detective was good. Though, I'm still not convinced it'll be as good as season one.
A German-Canadian sci-fi show from the late '90s. Lexx is a living ship, except not in a cute way. It's actually a gross planet-destroying insect. It was accidentally stolen by this 40something loser, and he and his "crew", a freed love slave/half-reptile, a dead assassin, a robot head and a man-eating plant-woman travel across the universe in search of... mostly sex, I guess. They don't fight a grand fight as such, just seek ways to sate basic human needs. It's weird.
Anyone started watching True Detective season 2? Personally, I loved it. Really excited to see where it goes. Season 1 is a masterpiece. Naturally, season 2 will be judged in comparison to its predecessor but I think (though I might seem biased) that the negative reviews are unfair. The creators have openly said how this is a separate story with entirely new characters. So I'm judging it by its own merits and so far it's dripping with quality, almost like a novel in TV form. Hannibal season 3 is going smoothly too! nothing like having an old friend for dinner
I saw this show on TV once for about a minute. The blonde in it is insanely hot (and I'm not even a blonde guy) but not even she could get me to ever watch it again-that show nauseates me more than anime!
The blonde left the show after the first season and was replaced by a redhead. Funnily, I don't like anime much. I think cos it's often so predictable, the tropes are so prevalent. Plus I prefer live-action weirdness. It's less exaggerated and, oddly, unrealistic. Also, anime women almost always look like freaks. Can't have that in live-action unless you cast a horde of plastic surgery victims.
Look, I think we're just going to disagree here. I didn't say female characters should be "shielded," I said what they're threatened with seems gratuitous. And although I focused on what happened with women in my first post, I also acknowledged what the producers were doing to men for shock value was also icky. It's not about stuff not following the books (I only read the first one). I was hoping for actual storyline and I'm getting more masochistic gorefest than that right now. If you don't understand it, that's fine, but when the producers shoot a rape scene and backtrack on calling it that, it says something at large about our society and it starts ceasing to be just some fantastical romp. Just because something is fictional (like the use of ethnic stereotypes and whitewashing in Hollywood) doesn't mean a "portion of the audience" is being oversensitive when they react negatively against that.
I haven't watched other seasons than the first, but if the rape scene is made to appear sexy or even something that Sansa was depicted to enjoy, then, yeah, that's gross. Ultra violence is nothing new on TV, but, indeed, if it's just about violence and there's practically no story or character development, then to me that'd also be unpleasant to watch. I'd vote with my, well, eyes, and not tune in when a show I despise is on. I completely root for diverse casts and non-stereotypical characters and story lines. In general, I prefer realism. However, I don't think rape would count as stereotyping women (in the GoT universe). Quite the contrary, when screenwriters have the guts to discuss something so prevalent in women's lives, I usually react positively. Unless, indeed, it's depicted as something that it's not: sexy and titillating. Or if it doesn't leave a mark on the woman/man, as usually it traumatizes emotionally even if physical trauma was minimal. As for your link, the writer acknowledges in the end, there's no way to know how the rape's psychological effects will be handled. Perhaps the writers wanted to show how fucked up the relationship is and went overboard with it because they have desensitized their viewers by now? I'd imagine that so as to keep their ratings, they have to listen to their audience, though, so maybe the next season will be an improvement? What often bugs me - minor as it is - is if only women are sexualized. It sometimes makes me feel like the (straight/bi) female pov is missing, that is, my pov. I know it's kind of silly, but it often makes me want to avoid shows that only indulge in female nudity. It's not that I want to burkha women up. I guess I'd just like Hollywood to revel in some male nudity too, for a change.
Just started watching Fargo. The first show in a while that I actually started episode 2 immediately after watching episode 1. Usually I can't stand most tv shows but this show I got hooked. It's funny, good writing, good acting. Billy Bob Thornton plays his character perfectly. So hilarious.
New show: Humans I like it. The premise is some androids (called synthetics) have become conscious. So far so good.
You might have missed a key story element. I'll leave it up to you if you want to read the spoiler: Spoiler The sentient robots were all in a group hiding from people. Two left (to get more fuel I think) when the remaining synthetics were stolen by thieves who didn't know they were sentient. That's how one ended up in the whore house and the other sold to the husband while his wife was gone on a business trip. The husband referred to getting the robot for a reduced price.
Just finished the first season of BoJack Horseman. It offered lots of laughs for sure. Sure, there were some clichés we've already seen e.g. in Californication (a show I actually consider gross), but since it's a cartoon and the main character is half a horse... Awesomeness.
Just watched the first episode of Humans, pretty good show. Girlfriend wanted to watch Mr. Sloane, completely generic dark humor comedy show, to be honest the predictability of the show made it a tedious show for me. Finished Deadwood some days ago, that was a freaking great show.
Been watching True Detective season 2. Not to bad but its nowhere near as good as TD season 1. Not over yet but the cast feels to big, not enough character development and the plot just isn't clear as it was in season 1. And not in that good keeps you guessing kinda way but just meh.
Finished Sense8 yesterday. Impressive, loved the concept. They did a really good job, this is what I expected when I watched Jupiter Ascending. Definitely not for the conservative viewer.
I don't watch the show myself but a guy from my town is on there this season. He is on the TV promo and for what I hear he received a four chair turn a round (not sure what that is).
Watching "Time Crashers," a reality show where people are "sent" back in time to do a day's work in different eras. There's just something really fascinating about having a modern reaction to what people of the past dealt with. If there are any foodies on here, I highly recommend Heston's Feast series. Here's his Gothic Horror episode in honor of autumn and the nearing Halloween.
