    Why i hate adulting

Discussion in 'Entertainment' started by Lea`Brooks, Aug 31, 2015.

    Because mortgages are hard.

    Because bills.

Because it's exhausting having to be professional all the time.

Because I hate driving. Traffic, GPS.. Where's my mom when I need her?

Because planning for the future is too much work.

Because I don't get allowance for sitting on my butt playing video games.

    Because chores.

Because I love stuffed animals, and a 27-year-old with a room full of toys looks odd.

Because having to cook (or pay for) your own food.

Because people laugh at me when I play in the rain.

ETA: Because when I create threads and the "i" doesn't capitalize and won't let me fix it, I look stupid. -.-

I don't want to do any of these things. :( Except maybe wine.

Feel free to share why you don't want to adult. That's kinda the point. :D

Because adulting is dying. Childing is living.

Want me to fix the 'i' for ya? ;)

I've often weighed the pros and cons of being an adult and being a kid, and despite bills and shit, I still prefer adulting. I constantly fail at it, no doubt about that, but at least I can eat the dessert first and I don't have to go to school (Uni isn't the same).

    Things about adulting I hate:
    -bills
    -budgeting
    -work
-adult expectations I constantly failt to meet like making a baby or furnishing my home to look like an effing interior magazine centerfold (I only assume those mags have centerfolds) or walking in high heels
-socializing with adults who are too much like adults aka don't play video games, wear funny shirts, or think SuperSoakers and dinosaurs are awesome
-looking sad and desperate if you happen to like above-mentioned stuff after hitting a certain age (fluctuates, it can be 30, it can be 50, but whatever it is, it will come unless you die before that)

    - getting up at 6:45 every morning
    - going to work
    - having to do the job I actually hate
    - some of the expectations KaTrian mentioned - learning how to cook, getting all dressed up for work which I'm trying to avoid whenever I can... :p

But... I still feel like a kid, kind of. I watch cartoons and sci-fi movies with my fiance (luckily we both enjoy them), which my parents disapprove, of course. Yesterday we watched Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles after many many years and wow... It was such a journey right back to the childhood! Wonderful!
To me being a child was constantly day-dreaming and writing it all down, and escaping into the world of books. Now that I started writing again, I think I actually re-created that child. Being a child is being free in your mind; free from all of the superficial, manufactured problems of the "adults" and I'm slowly working on bringing myself into that state of mind again.

You are never to old to have a brilliant childhood.

I don't like adulting because the system that was created for adults plainly sucks, holds little to no interest to me as a person and does little in the way of assisting me to become self actualised.

This, so much this. I'm trying to find a job that'd be more accommodating to my internal clock (I'm a night owl), but so far no dice. Society is unforgiving towards night owls. I'm sick of early birds (friends, family) getting all judgy 'cause I'm not interested in catching the worm. Please, keep it. From my point of view, they are the lazy ones, sleeping when I'm up and active at 2 am. :p

To be honest, I quite enjoy being an adult. Maybe I'm weird. But ... yeah, bills and cleaning the flat sucks.

Sometimes I like adulting. Being able to take care of myself and making my own decisions and being independent. But there's no day off!

When you're a kid, school is like adulting. You have to get up every morning and.. learn. But then summer comes! And it's freedom! You can sleep in, play video games or watch tv all day, ride on your bike for hours. Your parents (if your lucky) make your lunch and dinner, do your laundry, clean up after you. You don't have to do anything! Just have fun.

But you don't get that when you're an adult. Even days off or vacations, you still have to pay for stuff and cook and clean.

I just want summer vacation back. :bigfrown: I tell ya.. When I'm rich and famous, I'm gunna hire someone to adult for me.

I'm a teacher, the summer holidays seem now so short, and only seem to get shorter as time goes on. :(

Because time (days, weeks, etc) becomes a progressively smaller % of your life to date. It's passing at the same rate, but your perception of that rate is changing as you get older. Apologies if this is already obvious to you, but I wanted to warn you that it won't ever get any better ;-)

I read somewhere once... Forgive me if this doesn't make sense... That if you look at your age as a fraction, it makes sense why it seems to pass so quickly. When you're 7, it would be like 1/7 of your life. So it seems to last forever. But when your 27, it's only 1/27 of your life. So by the time your 80, the fraction is 1/80 so the time seems to pass by in a millisecond.

Does that make sense? I don't think I explained it right. lol

You just gave a few specific examples of my post. They are exactly right :D

You look at time passing as a fraction of your age, rather than look at your age as a fraction.

Aside from work and chores, adulting is GREAT! I would never dream of being a kid again, ever. Here are but a few things I can enjoy as an adult:

    - The ability to drive. Think about it. I can take my car and drive it wherever the hell I want! I can take it and drive all the way to California if I felt like it (no doubt to see our favorite Squirrel. ;)) Or all the way to Canada. To steal a line from Curse of the Black Pearl, “It's not just metal with gas, wheels, and piston engines, no that's what a car needs. What it really is...what it really represents...is freedom.”

    - The ability to stay up as late as you want, sleep as late as you want. Granted you'd have to deal with the consequences of that, but you don't have Mom and Dad breathing down your neck to be in bed by 8 and up by 4.

    - The ability to read whatever you want. Y'know, school makes you read books you likely aren't interested in. Well, as an adult, you can read whatever the hell you want from Shakespeare down to what some may consider ‘trashy books’. Why not? Your time, your money. Do with it what you will.

    - The ability to watch whatever movie you want, play whatever videogame you want, listen to whatever music you want. Who's gonna stop you from watching Sharknado while playing Grand Theft Auto V and listening to hard rap?

    - The ability to eat whatever the hell you want. Feel like having macaroni and cheese for breakfast, a basic tuna sandwich for lunch, and a bowl of cereal for dinner? Go ahead. Who's gonna stop you??

    -
Drinking, smoking. GRANTED, you'd have to deal with the consequences of drinking and/or smoking, and I urge moderation, but again, who's gonna stop you from cracking open that bottle of Guinness at the end of the day or lighting up that cig?

Being an adult is awesome! Aside from work and chores, dealing with consequences, and obeying the laws of course, you are free to do whatever the goddamned hell you want and no one can stop you! Not a damned person!

I don't want to be a kid again. It was fun and all, I had a great time, but there are things I can do now that my fifteen-year-old self would go green with envy at. I love being an adult. :D

With all due respect: I do not disagree with your points per se, but I would like to point out a difference of opinion.

I rode a bike as a kid. That's true freedom. You don't need a license, a road or petrol.

The rest of the things you listed are all things you now do that are child-like, and were not options to you as a child because: adults. None of those things are adulting.

Because being insecure was okay when I was a kid, but now it's time to toughen up :(

There are wonderful things about being a kid that go away when you're an adult, and wonderful things about being an adult that weren't there when you were a kid. They tend to be opposites of each other.

Great things about being a kid:
    1) Irresponsibility. You're not responsible for anything. You're entirely free! Do you hear me? Freeeeeeeeee! Nobody is depending on you for anything; your parents take care of everything for you.
    2) Your body works right. You're like a new car just driven off the lot. You can run, climb, do hand-springs. You can lie on your stomach on the floor with your chin in your hands watching TV for hours and be comfortable. (I can't do that for ten seconds now - it hurts!) You can do the splits. If you get sick, you heal easily - maybe your mom gives you some medicine but that's okay, because you get better. You love hanging upside-down from the top bunk. Every day is another opportunity to say "Mom! Dad! Look at me!" as you discover something new you can do (like riding your bike with no hands).

Lousy things about being an adult:
    1) Responsibility. All that shit your parents took care of for you when you were a kid are suddenly things you have to do yourself. I mean, when I was a boy, I didn't even know what car insurance was. Now I have to pay for it. I have to pay phone bills, electric bills, gas bills, every goddamn bill that comes into the house.
    2) The shittiness of nature. When you're a kid, your body gets better and better and better with each passing day, each passing year. You get bigger, stronger, faster, and it feels great. But when you're an adult, your body starts getting worse. You go into a slow decline that lasts decades and decades. You get slower and fatter and weaker and more pain-ridden. You go bald, and whatever hair you have left goes gray. You get man-boobs, and the last thing you ever wanted was man-boobs. You start paying attention to ads for Viagra.

    I'll think of more later, unless I don't. ;)

Pro: If I want to eat cake for lunch I can. Child me would be incredibly impressed.
Con: The older I get, the more 'urgh' noises I need to make when standing up. This is something child me would never understand.

As much as I hate adulting, though, I'm not afraid to be old. If anything, I'm excited! It's like being a kid again.

Living in an old folks home where people take care of you and cook your meals.

You don't drive because your family is afraid you'll kill someone.

You get to play checkers and cards and stuff all day.

    You're back in a diaper.

    Seems pretty awesome to me!!

Being an adult ROCKS. It is infinitely better than being a child. The list of reasons why is so long I'm not even going to bother.
