Beta Reading Fantasy novel approx 12,000 words

Discussion in 'Collaboration' started by Kalisto, Oct 3, 2015.

I won't have you read the whole thing, but I would like about the first 5 chapters read. It equates about 12,000 words.

    Genre is fantasy.

    Thank you for the advice.

    Genre: Fantasy.
    Audience is adult.

Back of the book type summery: When Ingrid kills a cruel prince she never even thought of the consequences. Exiled and stripped of her title, she is now lives on the streets of White Ash as an agent for the king. When Ingrid is offered a chance to have back all she lost, she jumps on it immediately, only to find the situation is far more complicated than a simple quest for redemption.

A bit more about the story: I basically wrote it as an excuse to use all the research I did when I went through a medieval phase where I studied medieval times for no particular reason. (I go through phases like that. I can probably name you four or five hereditary diseases that affect only 1 and 5 billion. I mean, did you know there's an actual vampire disease and King George III may have suffered from it, which may have been the actual cause of his supposed madness?) But I don't see that as a bad thing, because let's face it: JRR Tolkien wrote Lord of the Rings as an excuse to use his made up languages.

It is fantasy and not historical fiction. The idea was to use the research to make the story convincing not accurate. So I am hoping I achieved that.

Longer Synopsis of what you will be reading: While the story does takes on several viewpoints, the primary perspective is Princess Ingrid Helmsheim, who is quite literally a broken woman. Since killing a prince from another land, she has been politically ruined. While she is not stripped of her official royal title, she is no longer permitted to inherit any lands or hold any authority in her own Principality. She now works as a private agent for her brother-in-law King Godfrey in his spy network known as the Pact. After the death of the king of White Ash, she journeys to the city of Hearth to console her elder sister Karina as well as her niece and nephew. While there, Hearth is attacked by the Principality of Barious and overthrown. Ingrid's neice and nephew are killed and Karina is captured. Since Ingrid is married to the Prince of Barious, she orders the captain of the knights of Barious to release her sister and they both return to Helmsheim.

Six months after the attack, Ingrid had been working with her sister to try and locate the bodies of Karina's children, Selmer and Gretchen. Ingrid is sent to a private meeting with her father where he agrees to restore her royal privileges if she kills a man named Gilleasburg "Gil" Hearth. Gil was married to Ingrid's younger sister Signe and believed to have killed her, though there wasn't any real evidence of it. Karina opposes the idea and insists Gil is innocent though doesn't really explain how she knows that. Ingrid leaves home suspecious as she goes to hunt Gil.

Okay. I would throw pizza rolls in the mix... Hey, if I can get suggestions on places that would be interested in that kind of story, that'd be awesome.
