    Acai

Acai almost wet his pants when the giant black tent bent down in front of him and a smiling wooden mask revealed itself from underneath. "What the hell is that?!?!?!" he squealed in a high girly voice. He was instantly ashamed of himself, but he was also highly relieved when the tall sorcerer came to his rescue. A warm feeling stirred in Acai's chest. He was not accustomed to people sticking up for him, not even his own family did that. In fact, his family did everything they could to belittle him and make him feel worthless. And yet, here was a complete stranger standing up to the tent monster for him.

Then Acai's eyes grew huge as the tall sorcerer cleaned him up with some kind of cleaning spell and then introduced himself. Did he say he was Vetiver Longhand? Acai had heard all kinds of tales about him back home. Vetiver was a great sorcerer and his doings were known far and wide. When Vetiver offered for Acai to be his assistant, Acai's mouth went completely dry and he took another big gulp from the canteen.

"I...I mean, sure...sure, I'll be your assistant," Acai babbled.

That's when the beautiful lady in red popped up. She complimented his looks, touched his cheek with her soft hand, and then introduced herself. Acai was starting to feel dizzy. Did she say she Lady Merrique??? Merrique was just as famous as Vetiver! A lady sorceress who fought alongside her people against rogues and monsters! Acai had also heard that Merrique had gone to Torun to learn how to turn into a wolf. He wondered if she would do it for him if he asked nicely. Before he could, though, Merrique asked if she would be her assistant as well.

Acai was breathless. All of his dreams were coming true and he hadn't even entered Para'ven yet!

"S...sure, I'll be your assistant, too," Acai gasped. He was about to tell them how much of an honor it was to meet them, but the dizziness overcame him and he collapsed on the ground. The surprise of it all had been to much and he had fainted. He dreamed of living in a castle with Vetiver and Merrique as his parents, and his old family were their slaves, and Acai whipped them every time they so much as looked at him.

    He smiled in sleep.

Mixine smiled from behind her mask as Vetiver Longhand intervened, but it faded immediately as she quickly had to retreat four paces before whatever Veltiver was using was allowed to manifest. What was this ring? If Veltiver disliked "dirt" so strongly to use such power, then there was only one reason to not attempt the same on her - the field she projected.

As Acai collapsed, Mixine let out a sigh and tested Vetiver with a slight pause, "You know... I meant no harm to this sprout-ling."

The energy field around Mixine slowly dissipated as turned to Mahtr and whispered something to him. Nodding in agreement, Mixine decided to speak for him - she could not let him take the risk for her deception.

"This is Mahtr," Mixine introduced him honestly, "We just met, but his burden is really my own. He was helping me out. He is a humble gatherer, but he is not my charge. Nor the contrary."

As she said this, Mahtr removed the heavy load and set them down on the ground. Without revealing herself, Mixine raised and arm and covered it with the cloak before slipping down and retaking up her gear as she had several hundred times before. She struggled to stand for a second and grunted less strongly than would be expected. Mahtr could carry the boy if necessary.

"Everyone, we'll be camping tonight in the city... we'll find a place to go that's out of sight." He spoke loudly and clearly, turning around, facing the others behind him. "In Para'ven, not out of it."

Mixine said in agreement, "Your compassion is appreciated."

Two mages and a half-starved and supposedly blessed child still amounted to more raw power than Mixine's entire experience with her ability. She knew she was safe so long as she stayed with good people like them. Mixine was direct in asking Merrique, "When we camp, I need to speak to you."

    Merrique

Merrique was smiling broadly at the cute little boy (he obviously knew who Merrique and Vetiver were, and he was overwhelmed) when Acai suddenly fainted. Before his head could hit the ground, though, Merrique's hazel eyes blazed like gold coins and a soft patch of green moss appeared. Acai's head fell on the moss-pillow and he was unharmed.

"Not bad for a second-rate witch, eh?" Merrique said to Vetiver, giving him a saucy wink.

"When we camp, I need to speak to you."

"Of course, we can talk whenever you'd like," Merrique said with a friendly smile. "We can talk right now if you'd like, while we head into the City." Merrique remembered Acai and frowned down at him, then looked at Vetiver. "Um, can you do something about him? Wake him up or carry him or something?"

Jade was grumbling to herself, as they walked through the gates. She was exhasted already, having moved far more than she was used to the past four months. She knew that she was making a lousy first impression, and yet, she did not care. She never enjoyed the company of other people much, preffering to operate alone. And yet, she had a feeling that this adventure was going to be different. There was something about the abandoned city that did not seem right, some danger she could not really explain. She will have to rely on this strange unrelated group that formed around her. She looked back to Mix, the walking tent. It appeares to be talking with the annoying sorceress. Jade sighed.

Looking around, she suddenly saw three figures, looking down at them. A winged warrior, a beutiful woman, and a strange, empty cloak. There was something about the cloaked figure, something she could not explain was drawing her to it, tapping her interest. She had never seen it before, neither of the statues, and yet it seemed awfully familiar. Jade turned to Vetiver, the one who probably had the most knowledge in the group about lore.

"Tell me. These statues above us, do they hold a special meaning?"

    Vetiver

Vetiver nodded at The Tent. Supposedly, she didn't mean any harm. As she went on to introduce her muscle-y partner, Vetiver decided to give her another chance. She was just an odd-ball, and which one of them wasn't a little screwy? Still, Vetiver didn't like her smell...or her tent contraption thing...or her creepy mask. If he ever got the chance, he was definitely going to cast an intense purifying spell on her.

"Not bad for a second-rate witch, eh?"

Vetiver actually was impressed by Merrique's quick thinking, but of course he had no intention of telling her that. He merely nodded and glanced away when she winked at him. Was Merrique flirting? Did she like me? Is that why she's always bothering me with stupid probing questions? He was considering simply walking away, when Merrique asked him if he could do something about Acai. His first instinct was to snap at her and tell her to do it herself, but then he thought, Well, she did save Acai from a head gash, it's only fair that I do the next part.

"I guess," Vetiver grumbled. He held out both his hands over Acai's prone figure. All of his clunky jeweled rings glowed brilliantly and Acai levitated off the ground. "Okay, enough standing around." With that, he stalked away toward the gates of Para'Ven, his pet snake slithering at his side. Acai's body floated behind him, as if he was suspended on an invisible stretcher.

"Tell me. These statues above us, do they hold a special meaning?"

"What statues?" Vetiver snapped impatiently. Then he looked up at what Jade had spotted. "They are the Three Gods, of course," he said in a hushed, reverent tone. "Marius, Tynivia, and Formless Relatus. My family had a chapel in the back of the house, with big painted statues of each of them. The biggest statue was Formless Relatus, though; they held him in higher esteem than the others. I can still remember Great Maja, my lovely grandmother, leaving offerings and libations at the feat of his statue, like it was yesterday."

Vetiver stared up at the statues for a brief moment, then cleared his throat and looked embarrassed. "I'm...I'm sorry," he told Jade. "You didn't ask for my life story and I'm sure you don't care. I won't do that again." He gave her a slight grin, even though he was hurting inside.

"We can talk right now if you'd like, while we head into the City."

Mixine nodded in agreement and watched Vetiver continue his magic trickery, the man seemed to require these rings in order to weave his spells. She had not seen the same with Merrique, meaning that her power was far closer to her own abilities in origin. The vague notion of "second-rate" slipped through her mind and she realized that this strange man held greater power. Though the notion did not intimidate her so much as irritate her, she had blundered and boxed herself in. Baba protected her and made sure she was not in such a predicament, but traveling as a male meant keeping her Brackenmarsh identity also a secret. Hopefully, this other witch was understanding.

"My rations are yours to give to Acai. Nuts, berries, some fish wrapped in oak... just do not tell him where it comes from." Mixine shifted the weight on her back a little and whispered to Merrique, "What is of these kidnappers and why are we going into this place? Is it not even more dangerous?"

Jade looked at him amused. He was so frightened of revealing himself, reminded her of herself. Only, she was better at holding her tongue, usually.

"The three gods?" She wandered, her eyes reverting back to Formless Relatus. "I have never heard of them." Which was true. The only gods in the Middle Belt were the Muse of Brakenmarsh, and the Marsh Spirits, and the dragons of the Scaled Empire. "Do they reveal themselves often?"

As the conversation continued the sun began to set, resting gently on the horizon before beginning to dip below it, night encroaching from the other side. The large shards that formed the barricade now lay before the party, a thin mist rolling over the top, seeping down the side and flowing between the brass hooks that marked the shards of obsidian, signs of pilgrimage to the hallowed ground. A cavalcade of muted noise began to fill the air, the sound metal grating against some unknown substance and a series of inhuman screeches before being silenced. Footfalls, heavy and slow, as if from some cumbersome beast came next, and a series of hisses before yet another ring of metal against metal.

A fight was clearly taking place over the barricade, a slight flash leaping over every moment with the sound of an explosion punctuating each. Between what though, was the question.

"Wait," said Jade, before Vetiver could answer. She heard it, over the other side of the barricade around her, the sound of metal against metal, and.distant explosions. That was the last thing they needed, to enter the fray of a battle. Someone ought tk check it out, she knew, and she couldn't let any of the other fools do it.

Jade ran over to the Tynavernish trio who walked at the front. "You hear that?" she whispered, and without waiting for a reply she continued. "Lay low, I will check it out. Trust me, I have the skills to do this unditected." The shadows started gathering around her, as if to prove her point, concealing her almost completely in the dark of the night.

    Vetiver

Vetiver was impressed by Jade's magic. The shadows simply wrapped around her and she started to vanish. "How useful," he remarked. "I was never good at invisibility spells. If even a small part of you doesn't want to disappear then you won't be able to, and apparently I like to be seen at all times. My mother always did call me a peacock." Vetiver flapped his hand dismissively at Jade. "Go, already. Do your spying. If you need help, I will come. And don't worry, I will keep our silly companions at bay."

That said, Vetiver turned to the rest of the group. "There's some kind of commotion up ahead. Jade is going to check it out. We will wait for her to return with information." He said the last part in a stiff, no-nonsense tone of voice and looked each person in the eye to make sure they understood. His dark eyes stayed on Merrique's a little longer than the others, since he was the most worried about her disobeying him.

    Merrique

Merrique gracefully accepted the nuts and things from Mix. "Thank you, my sweet friend!" she enthused, sticking all of them into her black leather satchel. "I will give these to the boy first thing when he wakes up. And don't worry your little head, I won't tell Vetiver. He's such a grumpy puss." She giggled at her own joke and wiped away an imaginary tear.

When Mix asked why they were going into Para'Ven, Merrique's facial expression went blank and her yellow eyes glinted ominously. For the first time since she joined the group, she actually looked dangerous. "We are all here for different reasons," Merrique said in low, dark voice. "I suppose Marcus and his lot are just here to loot, and who knows what Jade and Vetiver could possibly want or need. But I'm here to find a magical relic that might help me save my people, who were put under a spell." She grinned playfully, but the dangerous glint in her eyes did not leave. "And nothing will stand in my way," she added softly.

Just as Merrique uttered those words, Vetiver spoke to the group in a commanding voice: "There's some kind of commotion up ahead. Jade is going to check it out. We will wait for her to return with information." When his dark gaze landed on her, Merrique looked right back at him and broke into a full-blown smile.

"I will do as I please, Vetiver Longhand," Merrique said sweetly. "And I'm going with Jade." Without waiting for his reply, she unsheathed her beautifully carved bow and a long black arrow from her quiver. Then she jumped up, up, up into the air, seeming to fly as she soared over the gates of Para'Ven, her crimson cloak spread out behind her. She was as silent as the wind and her eyes smoldered like molten gold.

Mixine watched Merrique's departure and turned her attention to Vetiver, "Just relieving. Peeking means gelding."

She headed away from the group several hundred feet and set herself down in the shadows of the barricade. Her gaze turned to the group and making sure she did not reveal herself while still being close enough not to cause alarm From under her black cloak, she pulled her capsacin salve out from the second drawer and slipped down her thick slacks past her knee and applied it to her aching knees and outer thigh. Her nerves reacted quickly and the sensation of heat was a welcome one. Lowering herself even further, Mixine wet the ground before pulling herself upright before returning to the group.

She returned to Vetiver's side, "Do you intend to bring the boy into conflict? He may be of age, but he should not be here. It is too dangerous. Give me one reason not to take him with me before you go and get yourself killed by whatever is causing those noises."

Doing her utmost best to restrain herself, Mixine challenged his command though she was trembling and fearful of confronting him. The more masculine tone began to fade as she pleaded, "I do not want to consign anyone to the earth. Not again and certainly not another child. Never again!"

"I will do as I please, Vetiver Longhand," Merrique said sweetly. "And I'm going with Jade."

Vetiver scowled deeply as Merrique defied him and flew over the gates. "Fool," he growled, his hands clenched into fists at his sides. He briefly considered using his mental powers to drag Merrique back down to the ground, but he quickly decided against that course of action. Merrique would get angry and probably fire a spell or an arrow at him, which he would easily deflect, but then they would end up having an all-out magic duel. That would just lead to whoever was fighting in Para'Ven to know that they were out here. The only thing he could do, it seemed, was allow Merrique to go inside with Jade.

"I do not want to consign anyone to the earth. Not again and certainly not another child. Never again!"

Vetiver had been silently fuming when The Tent addressed him. He looked down his nose at The Tent and said, in a snippy tone, "If the boy wants to go inside, that's his decision. He came a long way and faced many perils to reach the City and I am not going to stop him. Besides, he's unconscious right now." Vetiver flapped his hand in Acai's direction. The boy was still hovering in mid-air and colorful sparkles floated around him. The sparkles were all the same colors as Vetiver's rings.

After a brief moment, Vetiver made a quick decision. "Tent Thing," he snapped coldly at Mix. "You will watch the boy while I follow Jade and Merrique into the City. If they run into trouble, they might need my help. Merrique is sure to blow their cover, with her childish antics!" With that, Vetiver spun around, his rich purple cape flapping dramatically, and strode through the gates. He brandished the Black Wand in his left hand and in his right he held a large brass bell. As he walked away, he started chanting softly under his breath. Dark purple glimmers sparked around the edges of his black irises and around the outlines of his body.

"Stop," Mixine's voice was back to being strong and masculine again, "Merrique may have gotten away, but you will not. Be a man and take responsibility by following your own orders by staying here."

    (Jade, Merrique)

Fog. Thick and heavy, clinging to any form that passed through it and preventing anyone from seeing more than three feet away. The streets were clearly cobbled, feeling one of the few senses that was useful as the smell of burning rotted flesh filled the air. Worst still though was something internal, a slight pressure on the back of the mind that, while a mild annoyance, was clearly prominent, a subtle ache inside the skull. Yet still there was something else, a feeling of being drained, and any arcane element, enchantment or ability to cast, quickly fading.

With every flash a silhouette became clear, a set of figures in the distance. The majority of them appeared armoured, though struggling against something around their legs while another figure was dancing between them, ramming its weapon through their chests while evading the attacks of something much larger. Sluggish, bloated, and inhuman could be used to describe the gargantuan creature, the chime of a bell ringing with every swing of its staff. It walked on four stubby legs, the front two close with the back two wide apart, and a third set of appendages jutting from its back. The upper half was a stark contrast, a thin torso jutting out with arms flailing as spells were slung.

    Merrique

Merrique felt her powers begin to fade as she entered the fog and she touched the side of her head, feeling something like a light headache. The blazing golden light in her eyes dimmed, like someone threw a scarf over a lampshade. She also sensed that her flying shoes were also being drained, as well as her magical ring. "I'm going to help these people fight this monster in any way that I can," Merrique told Jade in a low, rushed voice. "You go back to the others and tell them what's happening, but I'm going to stay and try to save as many of them as possible. I can't let innocents die on my watch."

Merrique refocused on the fight ahead. She ran forward, as graceful as a feline, then got down on one knee and fired her arrow so quickly that her movements were blurred. The arrow cut through the dense fog, flying straight for the fleshy monster's head. She shot at the monster again and again, snatching arrows from her quiver and firing with lethal accuracy. While Merrique shot the arrows, she also whispered a spell under her breath to make the arrows set on fire. She didn't know if it would work because of the strange force that was sapping her strength, but she tried anyway.

Jade looked at Merrique, annoyed. Not only had the foolish witch insisted on coming with her, she was now engaging the grotesque gigantic being in front of them, something that would clearly expose her and the rest of the group. She really hoped that woman will get herself killed soon.

There was still enough distance to stop Merrique, Jade realised, but decided against it. she felt weak without her shadow powers, which faded as soon as she entered the fog. So she ran back, using the mist as she used her shadows, her trained pace barely making a sound.

The larger creature remained silent, not noticing the arrows and instead performing a waddling dash towards one of the trapped figures, removing the metal that had locked itself around their leg and seemed for a moment to nurse the being, pressing a hand to it's bleeding leg while the sole figure continued its work, killing any of those trapped before turning to the large creature. There was a sort of feral snarl as it leapt. Now was the time the larger being gave any sign of discomfort, metal forcing its way beneath flesh and into the shoulder blade.

Sorrow, that was the best way to describe the sound the fat creature made, putting its compatriot down and gesturing for it to get away before using its staff to sweep its attacker off its back, its eyes glancing at the new pair for a moment with a strange expression forming before it began. The pair stopped fighting for a moment as the human figure seemed to notice them as well.

    Silence.

The human figure looked at the larger creature for a moment, before leaving it behind and marching through the mists towards them. It raised its left hand, a small crossbow clearly visible as a bolt was launched at Merrique, slicing through the air towards her right shoulder.

    "Stop,"
The Tent yelled in a deeper, stronger voice than before. "Merrique may have gotten away, but you will not. Be a man and take responsibility by following your own orders by staying here."

Vetiver rolled his eyes skyward without turning around. "Don't tell me what to do, Tent Thing," he said bitingly. "If you're so worried about Acai's well-being, stay here and guard him. I'm not going to just stand around having boring chit-chat with you and let Jade or Merrique get killed."

Once inside the gates, Vetiver heard faint noises ahead, but he could barely see anything through the fog. He also felt his magic draining away and he stumbled even though there was nothing to trip over. He shook his head to clear it as the purple glimmers around his body fizzled out, one by one. "What the hell?" Vetiver grumbled. He put the Black Wand and his brass bell away, guessing that they were also nullified, and instead took out an antique dagger with a long wavy blade. The dagger was not magical, it was just a plain weapon that he could use to defend himself.

He continued onward until he thought he could make out someone running towards him. It was Jade. "Jade, why are you running back?" Vetiver asked when she was close. "Is something wrong?"

    Merrique

Merrique was shocked when the monster shrugged off her arrows. She stopped firing and watched as it swung its staff and knocked someone (or something) back. Then her eyes widened when a human ran toward her and raised a bow. Before he even fired, Merrique dropped her bow and threw herself to the side and the arrow missed by a fraction of an inch. She rolled back onto her feet and took out a pair of curved throwing knives from her belt, holding them delicately by the tips of the blades.

"Gaaah!" Merrique screamed before throwing the curved knives at each of her attacker's eyes. She was purely in her element. This is what she did, fight monsters and fiends to protect her family. She didn't survive all those attacks on luck alone; she was a skilled fighter. Without her magic Merrique felt like she had a lost one of her arms, but there was no room for insecurity. If she hesitated for even a moment, it could cost her her life.

As he came closer the detail became more visible, his skin was dark, though an unhealthy pallor had seeped in and a few strands of ragged grey hair were visible. His eyes were covered by a bloodied bandage, with a single pupil drawn in the center, as if to act as a replacement. His garb was light, scale armour beneath a leather coat, a hound tearing the head off a serpent embroidered on his chest. The symbol of the Witch Hunters of The Cracked Plains. Yet the design seemed archaic, the stitching, while not clumsy, had been rushed and it looked as if the rot was setting in at some points. In his left hand was a small, one handed crossbow, currently in the process of being reloaded, and detailed with the imagery of hounds. In the other though, the was much more worrying. A brand, glowing from heat with smoke billowing from it and into the mists. The metal didn't share any motifs with his armour, instead taking the shape of an eye with a thin pupil, a spike at each end and in the center all pointing up.
The daggers that flew towards him stopped around a foot away, dangling in mid air before dropping to the floor as he continued to walk towards, lips twisting into a snarl. "I can smell it. The filth that mars you." He lifted the brand slightly, preparing to strike. "When the time comes, all your kind shall be cleansed."

Marcus sat on the ground, having watched the exchange between the others, and now hearing the sounds of struggle and a fight in the distance. The new kid, Acai, was sleeping soundly on the ground, in a makeshift bed of wood, amidst the chaos. Marcus sighed. He wondered who was fighting over there, and if he would see Merrique or the girl Harriet again. Vetiver had gone off too, so he might die too. It sounded like a conflict that he didn't want to risk being a part of. Being in the middle of a conflict between something dangerous and those three sorcerers was suicide. Only Dart, Kent, the strangely clothed figure who had named itself Mix, and its larger companion remained here awake. Plus, he couldn't imagine what kind of fog that was

"Well, the good thing is, that if they die, we won't have to worry about them stabbing us in the back." Dart chuckled.

Marcus opened his mouth as if to say something, but refrained. They were the ones who had volunteered to check out the danger. They were brave, confident. Whereas the ones here were weak and cowardly. At least, that's what his father would say. Marcus knew differently; they were the smart ones. The cautious ones who chose to spare themselves from death's gentle touch.

Yet the absence of these powerful figures from their party would surely lessen their ability to survive.

"Let's..." Kent and Dart's attention was drawn back to him. "Let's go up the parapets. The battlements. We can watch and help from a distance, and we can even hide if we need to."

"Sounds like a plan. What about them?" Kent motioned back to Acai, Mix, and its companion. "I suggest we offer for them to join us. They may have valuable powers that can help in long-range combat, or better vision... or some type of magic. We can put Acai somewhere safe, then bring Mix and... his companion with us."

Marcus turned to Mix. "Did you hear any of that? We're going to go up on the walls of the city, and see if we can safely scout out what's going on, and perhaps help out from a distance. Would you like to come with us?"

Acai awoke suddenly and fell to the ground. He barely put out his hands in time to keep from hurting himself. "What's going on?" he snapped irritably at Mix, who was the closest person to him. Acai looked around but didn't see his new masters, Merrique and Vetiver.

"Did you hear any of that? We're going to go up on the walls of the city, and see if we can safely scout out what's going on, and perhaps help out from a distance. Would you like to come with us?"

Marcus' words made Acai jump to his feet. His eyes were wild as he shouted, "They're in there?? By themselves??" Picking up a handful of rocks from the ground, Marcus ran into Para'Ven as fast as his skinny legs could take him. He was immediately lost in the fog and a slight dizziness as he felt his magic draining away. But he heard the sounds of fighting and headed in that direction. He was five feet away when he saw Vetiver and Jade facing each other.

"Where's Merrique?" Acai gasped. His eyes went past the two adults and he froze as he saw a crazy-looking person standing over Merrique. "Get away from her!" he yelled. Taking his rocks, Acai threw them at the crazy guy as hard as he could.

    Vetiver

Vetiver was staring in abject horror as he saw the "one-eyed" maniac bearing down on Merrique. He didn't have his magic, or else he could have cast any number of spells to get the lunatic away from the lady sorceress. All he had was his ceremonial dagger, which wasn't magical, but it was a treasured family heirloom that he didn't want to throw and possibly damage.

"Where's Merrique?" Vetiver looked down at Acai and, after a brief moment of surprise, was about to tell the boy child that it was too dangerous for him here, but Acai interrupted him with a passionate scream. "Get away from her!"

And then Acai proceeded to throw a handful of rocks at the maniac. Vetiver was emboldened by Acai's act of bravery and he decided he didn't care if his dagger was damaged or not. He held the dagger by the tip of the blade (like he had seen Merrique do with her throwing knives) and aimed for the maniac's head, then let it fly.

    Merrique

"When the time comes, all your kind shall be cleansed."

Merrique scowled up at this murderous psycho that was standing over her and her hazel eyes flared golden. "Cleansed?" she said through gritted teeth. "What are you? Anti-magic or something?" She was trying to distract him so she could reach into her cloak and pull out her secret dagger, but it turned out she needn't have bothered. Acai came to her rescue, throwing rocks at the crazy guy, and Vetiver threw a dagger.

While the rocks and the dagger were flying at her attacker, Merrique jumped back and pulled out her secret dagger at the same time. "Maybe you're the one who should be cleansed, you freak," Merrique practically growled, holding the dagger at the ready for whatever was going to happen next.
