Outlook about to write a book.

Discussion in 'Traditional Publishing' started by Igor Titara, Dec 1, 2015.

    Hello all,

My name is Igor. I would like to ask you some things that will help in my career.

Recently i decided to start my fisrt book (in portuguese) but in Brazil there is not chance to make writing for a living.

Do you know if in USA is completely realistic to make a living Books, for example Books ?

Well, i heard that many bestsellers suffered a lot to match a recognition.

I am serching for deep and very honest reviews from professional writers to understand if is possible to earn using the literature talent, or if such idea is just a fantasy.

Should be possible to sell the full copyrights for many trade publishers ? like for example, to sell for " New York Book publishers " , " UK book publisher " , etc , etc.

In your opinion:: are many novel writers refused by trade book publishers ? I heard that yes, but i would love to know from a profissional people.

What the bestseller writers does to get sucess ?

    Thanks!

The publishing market is very competitive, and you will be hard pressed to make any money as an unknown author in the US. It is unrealistic to assume that you are going to be able to make a living as traditionally published, and only possibly a little easier (??) as self-published. To self publish is a LOT of work, and could easily become a full time job without any obvious upfront reward.

This comment is not meant to be offensive, just helpful: You will have an even harder time selling books in a language other than English here in the US, and you will probably have to hire a translator. Judging solely by this post, your English isn't good enough to become published or even reasonably edited (lotta work to edit that!) yet. It's pretty great for a second language though, I can't even make a legible sentence in Spanish (the language I'm studying).

I'll let others answer the rest of your questions.

    Hello Igor (Newbie here)
Congratulations on starting your first book!
Making a living off writing and creating books is not only competitive, but there is a lot of 'Hit and Miss' or as most of us know it as 'Luck' involved. So putting everything into a writing career from the get go might not be the best idea, maybe doing it more as a hobby to start?

Regardless of this, if you have a talent for writing stories, then an Agent will pick you up (If there's a market for your book) I would definitely advise reading things like the Writers Yearbook/ How to Get Published etc... Maybe not these books in particular, but if you are serious about competing in the writing market arm yourself with knowledge and as much research as possible!

I couldn't tell you how many people are refused but I would speculate that over 90% of MS don't get past the first phase. (Three Chapters)
In regard to the language of the book, I think Nicoel has touched on that well.
I hope I could be of some help!

Even most apparently-successful published authors still keep their "day job." I think that it's unrealistic to plan on earning, from writing books, more than a modest supplement to your income. Elizabeth Gilbert, for example, won awards but still kept her day job until the unexpected runaway success of Eat Pray Love.

    Hi Noele,

Of course my idiom is not the best ... I know
That's why i think better to translate it.

Well, I am studying the market.

Honestly, I am doing a research about Ancient History , is it a good market ?

Writers like Stephen King, Nicholas Sparks, Paulo Coelho , Agatha Cristhie ... etc done something to be accepted. They are a kind of inspiration for begginers like me!

In a way , they got your objectives, so why we could not get sucess too..

Depends on you audience. Think of novels like Percy Jackson or films such as The Mummy or Indiana Jones, they all incorporate ancient history and are a great market. If I were you I'd write in Portuguese and if you're successful in Brazil then your work can be translated, think of Jorge Amado or other successful Brazilian authors.

Well, you find out 5 books later if you can write or not. You won't know from your first try.

La primera vez esta no sufficiente para determinar tu capacidad
Cinco libros es mas o menos cuando tu sabes
    Hay pocos trabajos

I write because I think it is an important skill to have
The only reason I write professionally is because it became clear to me that I could
