Upon the recommendation of you fine forum members I'm watching Banshee, season 1. Love the photography and the complex plot. Not that excited about the 'Godfather(s)' theme but I'm willing to suspend reality for the show.

I watched Blacklist on Netflix. Season 1 was a lot of fun, although some of the sub-plots dragged, especially the "is he, isn't he" involving the two MCs.

But Redington was well-realized and entertaining, which elevated the show above the standard procedural-with-a-twist it might have been.

I am now most of the way through season 2, and on several occasions it has threatened to jump the shark. It has also rehashed the ups and downs of particular relationships that have already been adequately explored. In addition the central mystery of the female MCs past has been dragged out to the point of tedium.

Will I watch Season 3? Not sure. But I do recommend the first season.

Wow, the new season of American Horror Story is truly horrifying... ly pretentious. :blech: Even more so than before. Lots of posing, contrived dialogue, wooden acting, and no Jessica Lange. The last season was already kind of shitty but this is just unwatchable.

NARCOS on Netflix. Pablo Escobar and his drug trafficking escapades from Columbia to the U.S.A.
It's even better than it sounds.

I watched the Supergirl pilot. First of all I would say that I dislike superheroes, and especially superhero TV shows- I have no interest in Arrow, Speedyman, Sons of Marvel, Superman When He Was A Fuckwit, That Prick out of The OC Without Batman- or whatever. The only one I have found watchable is Daredevil on Netflix (actually I find Daredevil genuinely good).

The tone was thankfully light-hearted and fun, rather than the sort of angsty crap these shows normally go for. The non-action scenes shamelessly ripped off Ugly Betty. The action scenes were passable. But everyone was likeable and it ticked along nicely.

One complaint; I know it is a rare for a female lead in a superhero show; but does female empowerment need to be referenced continually? Why can we not just have a Ripley or a Sarah Connor- where gender is secondary to a character fulfilling a role?

Watching Frontline. It's absolutely fascinating. I had no idea this went on. Gawd our mainstream news is so crappy.

    Terror in Little Saigon
    Mind boggling.

I've started watching a little NOVA recently... had no reason to before because BBC. But without the BBC I kinda had to look elsewhere for some of my documentary fixes. NOVA is actually reasonable... i.e. it is not the normal horseshit that comes out of National Geographic or Discovery- pseudo science crap dressed as documentaries to attract advertising.

It is not on par with BBC 4. Truly impartial documentaries written and introduced by leaders within their field without any bias are truly only shown on the BBC... and I do not say that because I am British (maybe a little), I say it because it is true. They do not sensationalize or chase ratings, they just provide information.

But anyway, I watched Jessica Jones. I am truly impressed what a low budget and absence of CGI does for this tired shit-fest of a super-hero genre. It is so much better when it has to rely on good old-fashioned characterisation, plot, direction, cinematography, and not sill-arse over-blown special effects. When finally our film and TV industry learns that bigger is not better we may get a few more quality shows.

That's not humanly possible. Our biases are part of the way our brains work.

I'm not disagreeing that some programs are much closer real world portrayals than others, mind you. A lot of good programming comes out of Canada and the UK, and the US 'science on TV' market is absolutely full of crap.

Well, I'm on episode 4 or 5 of Banshee, season one, I'm going to bag it. How many times can one watch fist fights that would normally kill a person before one gets bored. Too much gratuitous violence, not enough story.

This is what I suspected and why I passed on it. More and more, asylum, which was great, appears to be an anomaly in a field of stench.

Started watching Salem on Netflix. It's quite good. I like the depiction of witchcraft, and the whole women's emancipation thing feels quite justified considering women were something of an underclass back then. I also think actors playing the main characters/lovers are doing a pretty good job and they have good chemistry. The side characters, however, are utterly forgettable (compare to e.g. Deadwood where even the side characters were amazing and memorable) and I'm on the fence about the whole witches + lesbianism trope 'cause, well, it's just such a trope although I also think witchery and sexuality do go well together. But it's not like all the witches in the series are even women, but I guess when it comes to fan service, that's just how it goes. Boring. :bigmeh:

Well as someone who loves the movie and the show I've got to admit, I've slipped and up said Fargo (the place) in Minnesota quite a bit on knee jerk reactions :p

I watched the first episode and I have a feeling the writers think they can get away with gender reversals of tropes (drunk female PI, cheating female boss, submissive men), but it's really about the diversity of ideas, not this... shallow, boring attempt at originality. A simple gender reversal won't make a tired, predictable character into something interesting.

But maybe the story will be good...

I couldn't get into Dare Devil either. If I start reading a book while trying to watch a TV show, it's usually a good sign I'm not gonna get into it. :p

I did like Agent Carter, though.

I think my main issue with Dare Devil stems from the movie when he was played by Ben Afflek, and now he is going to be Batman!!! Where is Adam West when we need him?
