Ah, OK. I saw that wasn't what it says under your avatar, but sometimes people move around and don't update the info.

Oregon is a pretty nice state, at least from a natural stand point.
I live in the Willamette Valley, which is between the Cascades and the Coast Range. To the east there's the high desert, about an hour west there's the Oregon coast, and to the north there's the city of Portland and the Gorge.
All that to say, there is a lot of variety for one state.
(And going south....um.....I guess you get to Salem eventually? That's cool, right?)

Well Maine is a very beautiful state.

But I fear if we held a meet up there we'd all become English teachers and or writers with drinking problems whom may or may not be divorced. Not to mention home appliances such as cars and washing machines will probably begin to attack us.

With it all ended being caused by a giant spider.

Ey-Oh. Like "ei" would rhyme with "day".

For some reason I end up defaulting to "ei" being pronounced like "I" and "ie" being pronounced like "E" when it comes to fantasy names.

I actually go the other way, pronouncing "ei" as a long "A," like in reindeer and eight. Names in my novel include Preithos, Eir, and Veiro, all with the "A" sound. But I wanted Eio to use the long "I" sound, which I guess could be confusing with the already several "A" usages. I really like the sound of Io, I just don't like the spelling.

I think the rule I apply actually applies to German, so I'm not sure why I mentally apply it to fantasy names. You could always have a pronunciation guide at the end of the book, I suppose :)

Shortest California song on the list:

"When you plan that your antennas are pointed in the right direction,
You make a deal in any situation,
    So with no evacuation,
Let California fall into the fucking ocean."

Thought about that, but I automatically read it with a long "A" sound instead of an "I" sound. I'm actually leaning towards Iona now. Or Inona... But I want it to be pronounced ih-NO-na, and I think most people would default to ih-NON-a. And I definitely don't want that. So Iona it likely will be! :D

Readers are going to pronounce it however they damn well please anyway, the bastards :) No amount of explanation or glossaries with pronunciations guides will stop most of them them sticking with whatever the first thing is that comes to mind.
