She does have some points. Australia has it's own issues. We have some very substantial debt worries, though the Liberals love to exaggerate it so they have more dirt on Labour (politics ), we have environmental conservation issues with all our lovely native lands that business desperately want to get their hands on, we have the issues with how we manage our huge asylum seeker intake, and the kind of people we ask for (all of the poor underdeveloped Asian countries scientists, lawyers and doctors), we have the economic inequality of the indigenous people and the difficulty fixing that, and we have serious binge-drinking, and domestic abuse issues.

All joking aside, though: I can kind of understand why she'd react this way. It's dickish, but it's natural. If she's come from hardship, seeing someone who hasn't dealt with problems of similar gravity complain about their home country can tick you off and make you want to school this person. However, later on she was dealt pretty good cards. Emigrating to Australia? In many ways, it's pretty awesome. I'd take those cards! A warm, sunny, progressive country renowned of its equality, social welfare, and safety. A country where the official language is English, where you can probably find an immigration community for support, where you aren't the only brown-skinned person around.

Now imagine you are a Syrian or Iraqi refugee even in our well-to-do north. You're not gonna get by with just English. And Finnish, as a language, is notoriously brutal and difficult to learn. You have to get used to darkness, cold, and closed-off people. You might be the only brown-skinned person in class. You have the fucking Soldiers of Odin patrolling the streets.

So I think just like she was in a position to school you, she can, in turn, now be schooled by someone else who's "having it worse." I doubt she'd receive it well.

Whether or not this kind of behavior is acceptable is another question. I personally find it a bit uncouth. Like does it really have to be a competition? :bigmeh:

Yes, that's my main issue with her. I'm feeling this is getting increasingly close to recreating the debate section again though.

I don't know about that... lol I'd likely be terrified. I have a thing with heights, so feeling like I had no wall would probably freak me out at first. Also, I suffer from pretty bad vertigo, so I always have to sit by the window. When the plane turns, I can feel it, but the floor looks level so it's disorienting. I have to look out of the window during every turn or I throw up. :blech: So those screens would have to be perfectly in sync with the movement of the plane or I'd be in big trouble. lol

@Link the Writer , there are different sorts of problems. Having your intelligence insulted, if you are intelligent, is probably one of the most horrible things that could happen to a person. So you say to that person, look I have a lot of intelligence and all of it is being insulted(by the corporate media), so leave me alone.

    Example of insulting American intelligence.

"Trump is bad because he wants to deport immigrants."

Fact: in the last eight years Obama has deported ~2.5 million immigrants, more deportations than other president ever.

So what do you get your socialist friend who has everything for her birthday? I'll add, she just moved into a new place, so some kind of home decor in the theme of social justice/socialism is where I'm hoping to go with this.

Probably not something to do with socialism. Just like, birthday stuff. But you could get her a "talk Bernie to me" t-shirt or if she's more extreme, something with Lenin on it. We have a Soviet leaders babushka doll set in my house. One of those?

Nah, she totally would want something to do with socialism. But I like the doll idea! I'll look into that. Update: that's a whopping $189 on Amazon. Lol. Never mind.

They're like 20 years old or something and carefully crafted so I'm not surprised.

A 'Property Is Theft' fist in a frame?
    A 'Beider-Meinhof' Wanted poster?

Items languish somewhere in my house, as my political gallery never quite shaped up. Also a 'Sink the British' German U-boat print, and the notorious 'Man Among Men' Rhodesian military poster [extreme un-PC]

I also have an original 'Smiths' poster, worth some money, I think so, nobody else does, yet.

...only first two items strictly Socialist, and kind of naff - considering the mindless murder, this sort of thing:

    upload_2016-5-6_16-38-41.png

...oh, the Bob Black, Abolition of Work poster is worth a google...

That's a bit of a straw version. Trump is bad because he wants to deport 12 million immigrants, not simply because he wants to deport immigrants. And it's not because it makes him a bad person. It's because it's a ludicrously impractical way to deal with a serious problem.

    @Steerpike - [you un-linked :)]

    ...

I'd like a collection of propaganda posters, or I used to - Soviet posters are good, English Civil War. Latterly I saw this guy under heading of 'Outsider Art.' Very spooky:

"He has become famous for his posthumously discovered 15,145-page, single-spaced fantasy manuscript called The Story of the Vivian Girls, in What is Known as the Realms of the Unreal, of the Glandeco-Angelinian War Storm, Caused by the Child Slave Rebellion, along with several hundred drawings and watercolor paintings illustrating the story."

Posthumously. That's how I've always imagined I'd ever achieve any kind of fame, too. Solidarity, Henry Darger. Rest in complete, reclusive freedom.
