So do I, but I think it takes a special skill to do it well. Jim Jarmusch is the master of films where 'not a lot happens', in my opinion.
I can't watch these at the moment, [married] but they're 'Moscow Films,' Tarkovsky - one has 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, the others in the 'top 15 greatest list...' ...set subtitles 'on.'
Kelly Reichardt. My new film idol. The queen of mesmerizing 'slow burn' cinema. Old Joy Wendy and Lucy Meek's Cutoff Night Moves Certain Women You can spend hours after each film talking about them. Trust me. I have. I mean, just check out this trailer for Night Moves, which is in competition with Certain Women and Meek's Cutoff as my favorite of hers, and my favorite of all time... so much tension. It's a very simple but also quite complex. The other strength of Reichardt isn't just her mastery of pace, but also endings. She knows exactly when to end her films, which is a relief because so many Director's still haven't quite got the hang of it. Her timing of the ending is always immaculate.
Loved it! It was grim and I realised early on it was never going anywhere good, but riveting all the same. I love film-makers who are brave enough to let scenes go by without a single line of dialogue, because guess what, that happens sometimes. I'm going to recommend a couple in return. You're under no obligation to watch either, of course, but I'm sure you'll enjoy them.
I've been watching many good films recently since everybody else is on vacation on some magical island somewhere, while I'm rotting hea. The upside is that I watch the films that I want to watch, without objections. Tom at the Farm No man's land (the trailer is somewhat misleading. It's not comedic at all). The Time of the Gypsies (Second time watching it after years and I rarely watch anything more than once). Today's film: How to draw a perfect Circle
I have not watched 'Night Moves' - yet - but I have a feeling that the film I am going to recommend will not disappoint. The trailer is not good actually, the film is much, much more than that. After I first watched it I really, truly slept with the lights turned on. No joke!
A classic I never tire of, and have decided will be tonight's film. Apparently almost half the film's budget went on the soundtrack.
I'm not really a fan of horror, and yes, the trailer does look very bad, but I know that's often misleading. I'll certainly give it a crack when I get my hands on a copy. Tonight I'll be seeing Meru.
'Coherence' is not horror. It's a mind-bender, with the focus on character-interaction. You need to be alert and pay attention. Not a film to eat chips with it, or to invite your friends. But maybe that's a thought..
Started watching this the other day. Why it's held in such high esteem I'll never know. It scores 100% on Rotten Tomatoes! The acting is awfully stilted and unnatural, and the way everyone makes such a big deal about the fact this guy has decided to 'swim' home by using his neighbours' swimming pools along the way is utterly ridiculous. They go on like he's about to climb Everest or something! Absolute garbage.
"Close Encounter of the Third Kind" is a perfect illustration of obsession. He becomes so obsessed with his close encounter he alienates his family & goes a little crazy. But of course, there's a happy ending - in this particular scenario. You know, it coulda been too much coffee.
I'm trying to find out which film company uses the opening shot from Bullitt as its ident. This is the shot in question.
^^ C'mon, someone must know. This is driving me nuts! Arrggh! When I saw this I was sure I'd found it, but they're not the same. And now I'm wondering if this IS what I was thinking of, or if the one from Bullitt is used by someone else.
"The Day After Tomorrow" - A climatologist tries to locate his son after global warming leads to worldwide natural disasters. So far, the Statue of Liberty is almost covered in water and New York is drowning. Probably a stupid question but my first thought was, how does an island drown? The ocean overflows?
Monstrous raindrops the size of bungalows tumble from the heavens - is more plausible, scientifically.
