    Wondering What People Think

Discussion in 'Fantasy' started by Reagan, Sep 28, 2016.

Okay so in my time thinking out the stories I'm creating, one in particular, I've basically fashioned my own versions of several things. Gods, things is just a horrible word to use there, I'm sorry.

Okay, so first off are the Human Seeds.
These seeds are basically the human soul. Except they have nothing to do with who a person is or any of that, but what connects them to the otherworldly forces that exist all around us.
Those who's seeds burn brighter then the vast majority of the population result in things like psychics, fire starters, telekinetics. Most of the first and last are usually the fortune tellers and all that who aren't frauds.
And Human Seeds are what enables a human to be reborn as a vampire if turned. Other races just die pretty much.

    Next are Magpie Witches.
Magpie Witches are humans that are born without a seed. Most Magpie Witches are part of large families, though from time to time one is born to normal human parents.
In the place of the seeds is a kind of void within them that connects them to another realm they call the other side. This connection is what gives them their steam magic. The steam is basically all there is in the other side, and using this connection the Magpie Witches vent the steam out through literal vents that open along their bodies. Now, these vents aren't actually splits in their actual bodies, more like the void within them opening to release the steam. You can actually see the darkness of the void through these vents, though you'd have to be pretty close.
So, the more steam that's vented around them the more powerful magic they can use, though venting to much can really drain a person. For the strongest of spells Magpie Witches have to be meditating, so most of these spells aren't offensive in nature.
As a whole the governing body for the Magpie Witches is known as the Council of Trees, and each of the largest families are known as branches of the council of trees.

    Next up, Gargoyles
I had fun with these guys.
Okay, so Gargoyles are actually the source of both, the myth of Gargoyles that adorn building's coming to life, and Lycanthropy.
The appearance of a Gargoyles true form can vary greatly. The one similarity between all of them is that they're large, and have hardened grey skin.
The form they spend the majority of their lives in though is their human form. It is impossible to distinguish between normal humans and Gargoyles in human form, a person could have a Gargoyle as their next door neighbor and not even know it.
Gargoyles are also extremely secretive. Which is really the main reason humans don't tend to connect them with Lycanthropy.
There are also tribes of Nomadic Gargoyles though who live in the mountains, believing they shouldn't have to hide what they really are being a human mask.
These Gargoyles only take on human form when absolutely necessary.
They're actually the group that caused the Lycanthropy myth.

    Demons
Demons are living shadows that can take on human form to deal with other races, though it's impossible for them to go out in public this way, they still look, off.
Demons have exceptionally powerful magic which they mostly use for their own personal gain, normally in making deals with humans. They do this to survive, as what the human gives up in payment is all the energy within their seed, basically leaving it dead. They think they're giving up their souls, but really all it does is completely cut them off from anything otherworldly.
Depending on the vibrancy of a persons seed is, a demon could potentially live off of one for decades.

Okay so all of those were from one series, this next one is from a totally different one, and is still being worked on.

    Vampires
So, while vampires are immortal, they still age like anyone else.
They do need blood to survive.
They are somewhat quicker and stronger then humans, and quite a bit harder to kill
But they can be killed, and it doesn't have to be a steak through the heart or any of that.
What makes them truly immortal though, is upon their death, whether from injury or even old age, their entire body, clothes and all, harden over like plaster, before crumbling away leaving behind the vampire at the age they were when first turned. They keep all their memories despite this.
But it is still possible to kill a vampire for good, for hours following this rebirth their bodies are basically lifeless as their, for lack of a better word, systems reset. During this time, if killed, they're dead for good.

    Okay, that's it I think.

Sounds like the foundation for an interesting world. So what is the story going to be?

I have a progress journal on here where I put up kinda synopsis of the series' I have planned. I don't think I wrote them up to well, but basic gist given and all that.

Most of these are from The Other Side.

    The vampire is from Witiko.

I love the vampire concept. More specifically, the vampire's life cycle.

    Crude Life Cycle:

    1) Birth of Vampire ---> 2) Vampire ages naturally like a human ---> 3) Vampire enters rebirth stage ---> 4) Vampire is vulnerable as he is restored to age of birth
---> 5) Vampire is restored to age of birth and repeats steps two through 5 for eternity, or until he dies.

This really intrigues me. I think what would make this an interesting read is seeing how a vampire is affected by the aging process. In some vampire stories we see a vampire who wants to die because he is sick of living forever. In your concept, the vampire lives forever but there is this new element, aging, which could make the traditional desire for death more complex. Maybe the vampire was turned at the age of 8 and hates reliving his childhood because of puberty or his inability to do what an adult can do (e.g. own property or hold a job). Depending on when or where your story takes place, I think that this concept alone can add diversity to your vampire characters.

I have a question regarding the gargoyles. You said they only take human form when necessary but before that you state that they primarily take on human form. It seems kind of contradictory. I'm probably missing information on why it would be necessary for a gargoyle to hide among/from humans. Do you have a reason why gargoyles are normally in human form? I'm not looking for an answer for myself. I just wanted to bring it up and make sure you think it through if you haven't already.

How I read it was there is a special nomadic tribe separate than the rest of the gargoyle population who live off on their own only in their gargoyle forms, and THEY only take human form if strictly necessary

The main population is interspersed among humanity and thus primarily stay in their human forms

I like the way you set things up for your story. I like your interpretation of the human 'soul' in your story world as Human Seeds and how it's what connects them to supernatural forces in the world. This can lead to a lot of interesting stories.

The Magpie Witches are also an interesting concept. I wonder how they interact with normal humans, are there friendly relations between the two or are they antagonistic towards one another?

You Gargoyles also have potential. Though you haven't said anything about they're actual powers, like what can they do? Do they have access to some sort of magic or something?
Also you said their the source of the Lycanthropy myth. How exactly? Were they somehow involved in the creation of werewolves? Or is that in your world Gargoyles themselves are the inspirations for the werewolf myths?

Your demons are close to the traditional demons of mythology, but they're cool. Should make for some interesting conflicts and story lines.

What intrigue me the most though, are your Vampires. I love vampires, absolutely love them, their my all-time favorite supernatural beings. because of this I'm very particular about my vampires in any book that I read and tend to judge their portrayals in any work of fiction in any media more harshly than anything else.
And I must say, I love your version of them. It's really different from the more 'conventional' vampire portrayals, but that's partly what's cool about it. It's different, it's original and imaginative. I like their Phoenix-like life cycle, and the fact that it's in their rebirth stage when the're vulnerable. There's a lot of potential here for lots of great stories.

One question though, you mentioned that the vampires are from another series than the rest of the beings you listed, So do they or do they not exist in the same world as the Magpie Witches, Gargoyles, and Demons?

I love all of your races/species! Each has defined weaknesses and strengths and great potential. I particularly like the vampires (their ageing and rebirth is bloody genius imo) as they seem so much more than just vampires. I can't wait to see how a story with them could pan out!

In all honesty I'm still pretty early in the planning stages for aspects such as their powers. I can't say for certain, but Gargoyles might not have much of a role in the first book at least. Not really sure.
The second one. The appearance of various Gargoyles tends to vary greatly. Including happening to be mistaken for a large wolf. So y'know, some villager sees a Gargoyle in human form shift into that of a giant wolf, and it just spirals from there.
Yeah. The Vampires are from my story Witiko. The rest are from The Other Side.
The vampires in The Other Side aren't really that special, it's more their society that I messed around with. It's kinda similar to the Gargoyles in all honesty.
There are two factions I guess would be the right word. Vampires, and Nosferatu.
The vampires are pretty much up to date with modern times, they're vastly different, but think the Blade movies for a basic idea.

The Nosferatu though believe that they were never meant to live among the humans, they see themselves more like predators. They kill, they stay unseen, they're pretty blood thirsty really.

@Reagan OK I like Gargoyles being the source of the werewolf myth. Werewolf are overused in fantasy, this is a great way to touch on them in your world without having to go the familiar, conventional werewolf territory. Gargoyles, in contrast, aren't used that much in fantasy, so there's a lot of untapped potential there, kind of an uncharted territory or at least the road less traveled in fantasy.

As for the vampires, so The Other Side has its own vampires. These seem to be more 'conventional' but the two factions idea is kinda cool, can lead to interesting stories/plots/conflicts.

I still really like the Witiko vampires, their life cycle, as @I.A. By the Barn mentioned, is a genius idea. It's such fresh take a on the vampire mythos. They're still immortal but not ageless, The're stronger and faster than humans but can still be hurt, and even killed permanently during their rebirth process. This allows them to be threatening and intimidating but not too OP.

I'm not a hundred percent sure if I'm still using it, but in one of my earlier ideas for The Other Side, it was disappearances of both Nosferatu and Vampire, and the two believing the other was responsible(They do not get along like at all) that kinda set everything off.

Like I said though, not sure if that's gonna be in the actually written out version, gotta see if it still fits.

I'm very good with the idea side of things, actually writing it into a story though is where I have trouble from time to time.

THIS is actually one of my biggest problems in my own writing. I have so many ideas it's crazy, but actually transferring them into writing is really challenging for me sometimes
