How close do writers become with their agents?

Discussion in 'Agent Discussion' started by Dnaiel, Oct 26, 2016.

Do you correspond strictly with regards to your project and nothing else?
    Chat a little?
    Date and have sex?

I'm just curious how the writer-agent professional relationship tends to go, how well they get to know each other.

I chat minimally with mine. She's very nice, warm, pleasant, etc., but... I'm not paying her 15% to be my friend! (or for sex...)

Polite greetings, basic comments about weather/vacations/the election, then get to work.

We're getting married in January. Bigamously.

...or, we talk 90% writing-related and 10% other. We share some interests and have similar senses of humour.

If I ever get an agent, I would want the occasional fancy dinner in NYC. If I get a book deal and my agent was part of it. why not celebrate a little with him or her? I have no idea how this really works. I never got a book deal, but I have spoken with agents on the phone. It was pretty much all business. Is there an agent out there known for being a little wild? Now, that would be who I want to work with.

Yeah, that's about what I was expecting. Thanks for the replies.
