I seem to recall a story from one of the sailors who survived the shipwreck that inspired 'Moby Dick'. The sailor cannibalized his friends to survive. Afterwords, he always purchased food in double-portions for fear of running out... but he never ever bought pork.

I just caught Heart of the Sea on HBO the other day. I don't often cry during films, but I did during the scene where Owen Chase makes it known to the survivors on his boat that if they are to continue to survive, there was no other choice. When Thomas Nickerson (Tom Holland) hears this and is clearly destroyed at the idea, dude, waterworks from my side of the screen.

    Don't forget this one:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Two_Years_Before_the_Mast

Also there is Ranulph Finnes account of severing his frost-bitten toes, tent-bound in the Antarctic winter. He uses a pen-knife, mixes meat in a pemmican soup, consumes big toe, middle, a little toe only. He describes the texture akin to KFC buffalo wings. Dissatisfied, in terms of flesh content, he continues, gnaws at the heel of his foot, mutton he says, drags himself towards Pole upon his face and belly. A great Briton.

Oh I hated, hated, hated that movie. The captain and first mate of the Essex had served together before and were friends, the captain wasn't an incompetent, the whale attack took place in one afternoon and the whale never stalked the survivors.

Most importantly, however, when the crew of the lifeboat first drew straws to see who would be killed and eaten, Owen Coffin (changed to "Henry Coffin" in the movie presumably to avoid having two "Owens" in the story) drew the short straw (to be killed and eaten), Capt Pollard offered to switch places and be killed in his place. Owen Coffin (as has been my signature quote here and elsewhere for many years) reportedly said "No, I like my lot as well as any other." He didn't snatch the pistol from (I forget who) and blow his brains out, he calmly accepted his death, perhaps preferring it to being forced to eat one of his comrades.

God that movie made me so angry, such Hollywood drivel wrung out of what was already an incredibly moving story. I'm sure when Ron Howard gets hold of Scott's journey to the South Pole, Titus Oates will die fighting off a fucking yeti...

    Sorry, rant over.

Nah, yetis are North Pole. It'll be marketed as 'The true story that inspired The Thing' ;) (Completely 'on board' with your rant - hated it too!)

The only plus side to it was that I learned what stuns'ls were.

ETA: I know yeti are indigenous to the North Pole. That's why Hollywood will have them attacking the Scott expedition...

If anyone has answered they know what eating flesh tastes like, I'd be avoiding them like the plague right now!

Okay so the obvious answer is chicken. If all else fails, just say chicken. Like who's gonna know anyway?

I'm just imaging them telling that. "OS Judy had to get it amputated and we we're all like "I wanna try human flesh" so we tried to keep it. I mean it looked yummo." :bigtongue:

Without knowing the details, it's hard to be sure, but I think that most modern amputations involve disease. I guess it could have been too mangled to be worth saving, but...

I ate a verruca, years back when I had a verruca. Like raw pork/raw chicken but quite tough, you definitely need incisors.

...it was a kind of military survival exercise with me, a bunch of special forces and a helicopter, I can't talk about it, but yes a man can survive on toe nails, hair, for up to two weeks with water, one thing I learned.

Agreed. If said flesh is being eaten raw, it would taste like blood. I doubt much else would trump that, without being cooked.

Here's a thought, though.... Ever smelled a cow from the outside (as in, musk + feces)... then smelled raw fresh beef? Very much the same. Think about that... Body odor + human feces + blood+ how we smell on the inside (at least, to someone who might be interested in eating a human).

Just try some, it's not hard to find. There is a reason cultures used the same word as used for pig or hog, omnivores all taste similar, if from the same area, ocean = ocean, etc.

I try to avoid chemically treated foods wherever possible. Kinda like play the lotto don't ya think.
So much synthetic crap in people, that even animal spit us out. Pretty bad when you are note even
considered edible by wildlife (Even sharks have better taste). :p

On the other hand you could possibly get a taste of person from a country with shady politics
and lax human rights. Just take enough cash with you to wet all the proper beaks firs. :D

I think meat of any kind tastes vile! It will only taste good because of the seasoning we add to it. That is why we developed cooking skills. We are not really carnivores. A real carnivore eats meat raw - like all the time.
